Dettifoss, Selfoss, & Ásbyrgi canyon

Today we visited the Goðafoss, Dettifoss, & Selfoss waterfalls, Hljooaklettar, Ásbyrgi canyon, Hringsbjarg, and the town of Akureyri & Forest Lagoon.

We started our day with a quick coffee from a cafe by our hotel, and then walked over to the nearby Goðafoss Waterfall. The fall was impressive, and we enjoyed hiking above and below it for great views. After enjoying the waterfall we visited a local grocery store for breakfast supplies, landing on Icelandic Styr yogurt.

Our next stop was the even more impressive Dettifoss, & Selfoss waterfalls. These were MASSIVE, and in fact Dettifoss is the most powerful waterfall in Europe. The noise and amount of mist being sprayed off were incredible!

Next we visited Hljooaklettar and viewed it from above. This area was essentially neat lava formations with caves and holes throughout, with red mountains set behind.

Our next stop was Ásbyrgi canyon, which was a super unique forested canyon with a crystal clear pond at the end. The canyon rises steeply on either side of the forest, making the whole area feel very insulated.

On our drive to our next city we stopped at Hringsbjarg for panoramic views of the coast(and Chelsea saw a massive waterfall!)

To end our day we visited the town of Akureyri, where we got hot dogs for dinner, as they are apparently Iceland’s most popular street food. They were good, but we will likely stick to restaurant food for the rest of our time here 😂 After the hot dogs we headed to the nearby forest lagoon on the edge of town, which was a hot spring and sauna spot with views of the town, mountains, and water surrounding the area.
