Whale Watching in Eyjafjörður fjord

Today we went whale watching in Eyjafjörður fjord, and drove 5 hours to the Snæfellsnes peninsula.

We started our day with coffee and breakfast at our Airbnb, and then drove to the nearby dock in Árskógssandur to head out into the Eyjafjörður fjord for a whale watching tour. We got kitted out in head to toe winter weather gear, and then headed out onto the water where we immediately saw multiple humpback whales. They stayed fairly distant, but we saw multiple plumes of air and water shoot up as they breathed, and the tails of many as they dived. We didn’t get to see any jump, but apparently that typically happens in tropical waters only. We stayed on the water for a couple of hours, and enjoyed the time immensely!

After the whale watching tour we did a quick grocery run, and then drove 5 hours across Northern Iceland to our next Airbnb. This area was predominantly farmland, so it felt a lot like driving across California, except with huge mountains rising up from the farms.

Once we got to our next destination we made a quick dinner of grilled cheese and tomato soup, and then headed to bed.Read more
