  • Stonehenge, Windsor

    May 14, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Next stop- Stonehenge. As with other places that I've heard and read about my whole life, I was blown away by actually seeing the stones in person. The size. The questions about how they got there. The thoughts about the ancient people who moved them and those who made them central to their lives. Blown away.

Then to Windsor, where we toured the castle and experienced the town. Sadly, it being Sunday, St George's Chapel was closed to visitors. I was unable to pay respects to The Queen.

  • More London

    May 16, 2023 in England ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Our Anniversary! We started the day at Churchill's War Rooms, under the Whitehall complex. It was fascinating, and nearly identical to when the doors closed. We had coffee & scones in the cafe- the cream wasn't ready yet. The map room was most interesting to me. There were thousands of pinholes- each indicating the position where a ship had been. Definitely a high point of our journey.

We headed to Buckingham Palace and saw the guards outside. Then, two carriages arrived, and left with people in them. There was a rehearsal for Charles' birthday celebration, and I think one of the carriages had Pretend Princess Anne.

We walked through St. James' Gardens, then over to Westminster. The rehearsal parade wasn't anywhere near the schedule the police thought, so we headed back.

The horses are trained by riding them through the streets under different circumstances- and we saw them out & about.

  • Last London Day

    May 17, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

We took the Thames River trip from the Tower to Westminster. From that vantage point we had a great view of The Eye, Shakespeare's Globe and many other sites including Scotland Yard and MOD UK.

We had some lovely fish & chips at a pub across from Westminster. And back on the bus, we saw the location of MI-5.Read more

  • Back to Southampton and Queen Mary 2

    May 18, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Our car arrived at the hotel to take us to Southampton. Check-in was quick and easy- except for the part where I got escorted by security for a bag check. It seems I had my Leatherman in my bathroom bag- one never knows when a pliers will come in handy. The blade was within limits, and didn't lock, so the little old lady was deemed not a threat.Read more

  • LeHavre-Normandy Beaches

    May 19, 2023 in France ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

    Long day. All the emotions.

Our first stop was in Caen, France. Almost everything was closed, but we stopped in a small cafe, and I successfully ordered -in French- a Coke Zero, a café au lait, and an apple turnover thing (didn't use words- just pointed at it.)

We proceeded to the Normandy beaches. We were there when Greg was 3 and Julianna was 4 months old. I was preoccupied with small children, which blunted the emotions. I didn't have that cushion this time.

What a delightful cruise. Tea at 3. Library. Dinner at 8:30(!) (Tea makes it possible by keeping body and soul together.). 25 hour days (extra hour of sleep every night 😁). Trivia in the Corinthia Lounge. Visiting the kennel. Sitting and stitching. Theatre group exercises.

I want to do this again!

  • And Home Again

    May 26, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

And all good things must end. We arrived in Brooklyn, caught an Uber to Moynihan Train Station (Union Station in Manhattan.) Uneventful day- and train back home.

    Wonderful memories.
