  • Oxi Day

    October 28, 2021 in Greece ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

Oxi Day celebrates Greece's entrance into WW2, when Ionnes Metaxis ( dictator of Greece at the time) said "Oxi" (NO!) to Mussolini who wanted to stage troops in Greece. Greece joined the Allies, and postponed Nazi occupation.

Big parade- mostly schoolchildren- and free entry to archaeological sites .

  • Out and About

    October 29, 2021 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Went to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The guards are dressed in traditional garb, including pompoms on the pointed toes of their shoes.

  • Welcome Aboard!

    October 31, 2021 in Greece ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Several steps, including a Covid antigen test. Negative☺️. Checked in, and our stateroom was ready by 1:00. Color me happy. It feels so good to be aboard. We were greeted by Jennifer, who was our Cruise next rep on the NCL Spirit cruise last year.

    Enjoying beverages on the fantail

  • Mykonos

    November 1, 2021 in Greece ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Took a boat to Delos- birthplace of Artemis and Apollo. Amazingly well preserved because the island was abandoned after numerous takeovers, so nothing was built over the structures. Over the years they were naturally covered with dirt, so basically the just need to be dug out.

After our rather bumpy ride back (a lot of passengers feeling a bit woozy.) (I was fine...) we took a bus into town. It is clearly the end of the season- a few shops open, as well as some restaurants.

Then back to enjoy a bev on our lovely veranda.

  • Patmos

    November 2, 2021 in Greece ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Tender port- easy boat ride to Skali, the main port city of Patmos. Lots of climbing steps and steep walkways--( my rear should look great.)

Went to the Cave of the Apocalypse where St. John wrote Revelations while in exile from Ephesus. Then to the Monastery of St. John.

Last stop was at Aloni restaurant for "a snack" (which was a full plate of food.) The family-run restaurant staff delighted us with native island dances-- really worth the visit.

Beautiful Day- deep blue sky, nice weather, striking white houses.

  • Rhodes/Lindos

    November 3, 2021 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Amazing Acropolis with, of course, a Temple of Athena.

Visit to a pottery shop with traditional techniques and patterns (I scored a mug and coaster-sized plate as a birthday gift from The Husband.)

Nice lunch at a hotel- the moussaka was quite good, and the orange cake was yummy.

We ended our time with a visit to the old walled city of Rhodes, and the Palace of the Masters. During some walking around, I got ice cream. The marking was €4 for a small cup. The lady charged me €2! (End of season special?)

  • Olympia (from Katakolo)

    November 5, 2021 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Beautiful day visiting the site of the original Olympic games. Walked the first race area. Saw gymnasium/ training areas. Then visited the museum.

We visited a family olive farm/vineyard, Magna Grecian. Started with some ouzo- just a taste for me. We had a "flight" of olive oil- a first for me. Then a hearty tasting sampler of local foods, and watched some dancing. We saw a THOUSAND YEAR OLD olive tree- that still produces olives. And of course, some shopping.

Between the Olympia shops and the shops at our lunch stop, I picked up a pair of earrings, some donkey milk hand cream, a couple of small gifts for the kids-- and I just might have picked up some olive oil. I just might have picked up a LOT of olive oil.
