  • 105 degrees daze

    June 18, 2015 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 36 °C

Goodbye St George, Utah. 105 degrees without a breeze is too hot for us, even in absence of humidity. Loaded up on food at Costco and Natural Grocers. Met two separate people who moved here from So Cal describing here as being too hot! We're heading north to Great Basin National Park in Nevada, up in the Snake Range! Grateful for air conditioning during the drive, and Walmart for letting us camp overnight with fantastic 4G Verizon signal!Read more

  • Phew...A Gas Station

    June 18, 2015 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 25 °C

Never know how many miles to the next diesel station. Good rule of thumb out here, always fill up if tank is half empty when a gas station is available. We didn't do that today, and started to wonder. Good news: we made it to Nevada and found diesel before the park! Pacific time zone. As if the kids needed more reason to be cranky and confused. :)Read more

  • Wheeler Peak, Great Basin National Park

    June 19, 2015 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

At 10,000 feet in the desert lies an island of conifer forest with streams. What a stark contrast with the vast desolate basin only 5000 feet below. The temperature is about 20 degrees cooler.

We got to our destination pretty late last night, but was able to find a nice camping spot inside the park in their overflow campground. After almost 4 weeks of camping, this was the first night we paid for lodging! The price was only $6. Nevertheless, it felt weird to pay to do the same things we've done for the past 4 weeks: legitimately park somewhere overnight, eat and sleep. The park's four campgrounds fill up fast, especially on the weekends. We got permission to park for free in a private lot across Silver Jack Inn tonight.Read more

  • Passing through Tahoe Natl Forest

    June 26, 2015 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

We crossed into California last night in the dark. It wasn't really our plan, but it turns out that Reno and its surroundings are unfriendly to RV dry camping. We didn't feel right paying 40 dollars to park 14 hours in an ugly KOA parking lot with electricity, water and sewage hookups that we did not need. So we drove about an hour into national forest, looking for a spot. No great choices here either, hard to see in the dark, but found a trailhead parking lot for Truckee Summit. The terrain changed significantly from gray rock to pine forest! A sign also warned of rattlesnakes!Read more

  • Lassen National Forest

    June 27, 2015 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

Great forest with lots of pine trees. Plenty of dispersed camping opportunities. Found a camping spot a couple hundred feet into a forest road, within earshot of the main road. We're only a couple of miles from Lassen Volcanic National Park's southwest entrance. Looking forward to seeing the park tomorrow!Read more
