  • Lassen Volcanic National Park

    June 27, 2015 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Mudpots, fumaroles, boiling pools, swimming lakes, wild flowers, pines and mountains. A fun park without big crowds on weekdays. We hiked Bumpass Hell Trail to see the hydrothermal features.

  • Last Spot At Chetco River's Edge

    July 3, 2015 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

We escaped California! Beautiful state but the most impatient drivers we've ever encountered. We just crossed into Oregon when the kids started getting antsy. Since it's fourth of July weekend, every place is packed with tourists. Our effort to beat the crowds by escaping to the national forest failed--took the wrong road and hit a dead end. But we were blessed by the last vacant spot at this RV park in Brookings, Oregon, probably the only vacant spot for many miles. Yay for rest. We're plugged in and have wifi for the first time on our trip. What luxury! Not too terrible for $40 a night.Read more

  • Siuslaw National Forest

    July 4, 2015 in the United States ⋅ 🌫 16 °C

Happy Independence Day! We escaped the crowds and found a place for dispersed camping up in the mountain forest next to the Oregon coast. Feeling tired but happy and free! Thimbleberries line the narrow road. Moss covered tree trunks and sunlight shining through the fog and thick forest. Nothing like solitude in nature with fresh air and bird songs, especially after two days cramped at RV parks.Read more

  • Cape Perpetua

    July 5, 2015 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

The ever changing weather patterns at Cape Perpetua on the Oregon coast. Devil's Churn is a neat spot where the waves churn against the rocks. The best view on the Oregon coast at 800 feet above was covered with fog.Read more

  • Tillicum Beach Campground

    July 6, 2015 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

US Forest Service campground next to the beach! $24 a night. The fog had set in last evening, which made for a freezing and windy experience. The next day, we enjoyed blue skies and sunshine for an hour! The sand was warm under our feet. The path to the beach was lined with Salal berries. We picked them and the children insisted on trying them. They taste like seedy blueberries.Read more

  • Siulaw National Forest near Hebo

    July 6, 2015 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Another night of dispersed camping in the rainforest! Different section of Siulaw near Hebo, Oregon. Very secluded here, but 4G is available! This turned out to be one of our favorite camping spots on our trip. Not one car passed by us the entire night and morning. We found a ton of berries (thimbleberries and salmonberries) along the road for miles. This is our older son's exact version of heaven. He is the most enthusiastic berry picker we've ever known, from the time he could walk and talk. Lots of wildflowers too. There is one open area that looks like it was logged recently. Otherwise, it is a thick rainforest with moss covered trees.Read more

  • Vermont Lookalike in Oregon

    July 7, 2015 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Tillamook, Oregon is a dairy farming community with forests and mountains on the Oregon coast. The town feels exactly like Vermont to us, down to the ever present smell of manure!

We're leaving the Oregon coast today. We will definitely miss the cooler temperatures. It's mostly in the 60s during the day, and high 50s at night. We won't miss our towels never drying though!Read more

  • Passing Portland

    July 7, 2015 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Longest traffic jam on our trip. Stuck in city traffic for 1.5 hours in Portland, Oregon at 3 pm! Finally made it across the bridge to Washington state.

  • Stocking up at Costco

    July 7, 2015 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Fridge is close to empty. We eat a lot! It's 95 degrees but dry. Cooler and fairly tolerable in the shade. They just started dispensing diesel at the Costco gas station!

Each Costco sells slightly different items. For example, they sold a lot of Tillamook dairy products at this one.Read more

Thanks Walmart for another free, safe, and convenient night of dry camping. We were parked across from the railroad tracks and log processing factory, entertainment for the boys. Heading to Mount Rainer National Park!Read more

  • River Trail, North Cascades NP

    July 17, 2015 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Found a nice camp site at Newhalem Campground near the Skagit River. Took a relaxing stroll on the River Trail in the old growth forest. This is becoming one of my favorite national park campgrounds.
