      Dinner on a rooftop

      29. toukokuuta 2022, Turkki ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

This restaurant (Dubb) was suggested by fellow "findpenguiners" @waysandays situated right next to the Hagia Sophia. So a huge thank you to them.

This was an Indian and Turkish restaurant. We ordered from the Turkish menu. I had this amazing chicken dish. The views were great as well from the rooftop eating area.Lue lisää

      Istanbul und seine Katzen

      2. lokakuuta 2023, Turkki ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

      Grand Bazaar

      30. toukokuuta 2022, Turkki ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

I must say the Istanbul e-kart (available at all tramway stations) is really a great way to explore the city.

We went to from Eminönü to Beyazit on a tram. And bingo, you are in front of Grand Bazaar. Though it is one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world, with 61 covered streets and over 4,000 shops, I was disappointed. It somehow lacked what I experienced in the Spice Bazaar.

Grand Bazaar is a must do to check the box. For me at least, Spice Bazaar was the jewel in the crown.

      Breakfast & Karaköy Stroll

      22. lokakuuta 2023, Turkki ⋅ ⛅ 66 °F

Our second day in İstanbul didn’t start as early as we thought it would. No surprise I guess. It was well past midnight when we finally got to bed after settling into the cabin last night. Anyway, by 8:30a, we were off the ship to make the most of what time we had remaining in İstanbul.

The plan was to have breakfast on the waterfront in Karaköy before doing a bit of museum-seeing.

As we did yesterday, we took the metro from the station near Galataport to the Galata Bridge … just one stop. From there we walked to the waterfront where locals had mentioned that we could find a couple of places to have breakfast. We did. But not the kind of breakfast we were hoping for. In hindsight, grabbing breakfast at Galataport might have been a better idea. On the other hand, a quick breakfast saved us from dallying over our food and gave us time for a stroll.

We ate our our simple morning repast as we watched anglers fishing from the Galata Bridge … ferries flitting here and there across the Bosphorus … seagulls looking for handouts. At that early hour on a Sunday morning, it was rather peaceful … which we enjoyed after the hubbub of İstanbul yesterday.

From the Karaköy ferry landing, from where we walked to Galataport last night, we retraced our steps. After all, we had time before the art museum we planned to visit opened for the day. And, as it was a comfortably warm morning, getting some extra steps logged in did not go amiss. We meandered on to a few side streets to check them out along the way. Mui, of course, had to peek into the baklava shops along the way. But this time his wallet stayed in his pocket.

      Istanbul Wrap-Up

      6. lokakuuta 2022, Turkki ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Left my hotel after 9 and got to the airport stupidly early for a 1325 flight but there was nothing else to do and I AM an airport geek! IST airport is impressive. Only opened 2019 and is Europe's largest and busiest airport. Top notch spaces, services and facilities. They even have a dedicated lounge for 'Special People ' (Down Syndrome, dementia etc listed) to provide a calm space and dedicated staff to assist.

Istanbul is a fascinating place. All too short a visit, although I saw the main historic sights. It is quite a clean city. I don't know if Turks just don't litter, or if there is very efficient cleaning. You get the flavour of the 'orient' with the markets and the shops along the streets, but it is still a European city (not technically part of the Middle East) and the infrastructure is all up to date and maintenance levels are high. And so much history from the Roman Empire through the Byzantine era, then the Ottoman Empire, it was a leading city for some 1500 years.

Day 1 Tuesday, Oct 3rd: Arrival day, so really travel time. But did get the one event in. Put in 8,028 steps , mostly in airports. It was partly cloudy on arrival and about 20.

Day 2, Oct 4th: Long day today and saw a huge amount. Really experienced the hustle and bustle of this place and all its chaos. Was mainly a walking tour of the south bank and overdid the walking with 20,772 steps. The weird thing about Istanbul is that it is very hilly and they built all their main buildings at the tops of hills! Mostly cloudy and it wasn't too hot.

Day 3: Oct 5th. Got up and was worried I couldn't do anything. After I got home last night I fell asleep for an hour then couldn't get back to sleep and was also really sore this morning. However, got a shower and breakfast and took a cab to the first stop to save my muscles for important stuff! Weather was a bit iffy too. Had really heavy rains overnight and it was cool cloudy and we had intermittent light rain. For me, though, better than 30 degrees! Ended up doing one museum less than planned but also managed to walk all the way back today. Today was basically the #1 and #2 sites on the tourist trail. Easy day of 12,350 steps in cool weather..

      Istanbul, Turkey

      10. marraskuuta 2023, Turkki ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Definitely not the way we had hoped to start the next Chapter. The day after arriving in Istanbul I had to fly back to Oz for 5 days so left Jessie to explore the city on her own.

We initially booked an apartment in Istanbul's Beyoğlu District. Unfortunately for Jessie, it was directly above a nightclub which made the 5 days pretty torturous. We were drawn to the area as it was promoted as being "more local" than the southern side of the Golden Horn. The southern side is where most of the tourist attractions like the Blue Mosque and Grand Bazaar are located. It turns out Beyoğlu is just as busy, but more as a shopping and nightlife area. I arrived back in Istanbul on Friday afternoon. After dropping my bag back we went for a walk down to Galata Bridge over the Golden Horn and enjoyed a shisha as the sun set. The perfect way to return.

The forecast predicted heavy rain for Saturday. We got out early and made our way to the Walls of Constantine before the rain set in. I'd say the walls are arguably the reason Istanbul, or Constantinople as it was called, is famous. Based on this I expected them to be a must-see destination. We caught the bus out to where Google Maps had a point marked for the Walls of Constantinople. All we found was a main road passing through a segment of neglected ancient wall. I guess that's what happens during endless years of conquest. Once conquered, likely forgotten.

On Sunday, we had an overnight bus to Bodrum. We packed up our gear and stored it at a bag storage place near the Grand Bazaar. Then, we explored the main tourist highlights: Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, and Topkani Palace. We had dinner before trying to get to the Bus station however ended up missing the connecting metro because the train didn’t arrive as per the schedule. We ended up catching a bus and train in the opposite direction so we could meet the original bus at its third stop of the journey. Nothing like a last-minute adrenaline dump to push you to your next destination.

      Tag 61.3: Karaköy am Bosporus

      19. lokakuuta 2023, Turkki ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

      Lunch facing the Bosphorus

      28. toukokuuta 2022, Turkki ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

That's our lunch. I had a lamb sheesh kebab and Shyama had buttered prawns. One interesting thing: we had just ordered these two dishes. We were served bread and tea on the house. Yummmmmmmm
