Huntingtower Castle

Die dritte Burg unseres Tages. Die sehr geschichtsträchtig ist - Verschwörung, Entführung sowie Mord und Todschlag an denen die Burgherren beteiligt waren. Maria Stuart und James I (Der erste König von Schottland und England) hatten dies u.a zu spüren bekommen.
Die Burg ist sehr verwinkelt. Bemerkenswert ist hier, dass jedes Zimmer seinen eigenen Kamin UND eine eigene Toilette hat. Sogar im Dachgeschoss die Zimmer haben noch auf dem Dach eine Toilette - bemerkenswert für eine Burg aus dem 15 Jhd.
Die zwei Türme (ehemals Wehrtürme), erzählen nicht nur die Geschichte der Bauphasen der Burg sondern auch von einer Liebesgeschichte. Welche durch einen beherzten Sprung einer jungen Adligen von einem zum nächsten Turm zu einem Happy End führte.Read more

Day 13
Day 7 Pitlochry and on to Perth

We set off from our B&B in Dunvegan after breakfast. We were sad to be leaving Skye as we have really enjoyed the time we’ve spent there. However, we were able to enjoy the beautiful scenery on our drive in bright sunshine this morning. We crossed over the Skye Bridge and headed east to Invergarry. We stopped off in Spean Bridge to have some lunch and then continued our route east. We soon joined the A9 which felt like a much busier road than the ones we have been used to, especially on Skye.

We followed the signs to the theatre in Pitlochry where we parked. As it was cup of tea time we went into the theatre and enjoyed a little something in the cafe where we sat by a window overlooking the river and relaxed in the tranquil atmosphere. We then set out for a walk by the river up to the dam where Andrew was keen to see the fish ladder, a series of ponds rising to the level of the loch built especially for salmon, trout and other fish to return to the breeding sites without banging their noses on the dam. We then walked into Pitlochry itself and then back to the theatre across a pedestrian suspension bridge which spans the river. The bridge is quite long as it is a wide river and so there is a fair bit of movement in the structure. We were grateful we were the only ones crossing at the time!

The final leg of today’s journey brought us to our overnight stop in the outskirts of Perth. Tomorrow we will say goodbye to bonnie Scotland as we head south.Read more

Day 15
Cairngorms to Perth

Simon had booked us in for a quad bike tour around the Rothiemurchus estate this morning so after breakfast we headed to the meeting point. We got there a bit early as we had to be off the site by 11am so enjoyed a nice coffee at the farm shop while we waited. Our guide for the quad bike tour was a lovely lady called Natalie. She started off my giving us a quick demonstration of how the bikes worked and then it was on with the helmets and we were let loose on the quads. After a couple of test laps we headed off, winding through the forest and across streams. We stopped every now and then and Natalie talked a little about the area and at one point to wait for the heilan coos to move off the path! There was some proper cute calves as well which weren't phased by the noisy bikes at all!

Our next and final stop of our trip is Perth so after the tour we set off with a quick pit stop for lunch overlooking Loch Insh. When we stopped here we envisaged a tranquil picnic overlooking the loch however it was so ridiculously windy that we lasted half a sandwich before we sought refuge in the van.

The campsite in Perth was very quiet and there were only a handful of people there. There wasn't much around but as we drop the van back tomorrow we packed up our suitcases and then Simon cooked up our final supper in the van, fishcakes, new potatoes and veg (the exact same meal we had on our very first night) which we enjoyed whilst watching lots of bunnies hop around right next to the van.
