Reisetag! Nicht mehr zur Kathedrale sondern direkt auf die Motorway Richtung Schottland. 3,5 h später Ankunft am Ibis Styles Glasgow. By the way, die Autobahnraststätten hier in UK sind tiptop! Sauber, kostenlose Toilette, warmes Wasser... gutes Angebot, preislich akzeptabel. Richtungsweisend. Hotel ist auch gut, zentrale Lage in der Stadt. Drumherum Einkaufsstrassen und hohe alte Häuser. War früher eine richtig reiche Stadt, heute leider leicht asi.. Deshalb nach den überschätzten High Tea im Jugendstildeko ins Westend. Ein cooles Viertel, erst eine schöne Cocktailbar dann ein kleines koreanisches Restaurant. Da endet der Abend mit typisch britischem Bibimbap und Kimchi. Ach ja, ein Paar Sneakers und Anti-Schuppen-Shampoo (ja ich weiß mein Bart ist zu lang....) im vorübergehen geshoppt. Oho jetzt noch in ein Pub in Hotelnähe, mit Livemusik von jungen Männern. Naja jünger als die Stones auf jeden Fall.. Cheers!Read more

Glasgow is the largest city by population in Scotland and 4th largest in the UK. Dave and I were excited to go to this city as we both have ancestry that hail from the area. Glasgow had a metropolitan feel that was a little gritty and yet charming at the same time with the river cutting through it. Although there weren't any true show stopping attractions we had a fabulous time here. Glasgow itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its music. With numerous live bands every night featuring traditional Scottish music, blues, and jazz it was hard not to have fun in this city. We also enjoyed some proper tea at a few tea rooms as well as listened to some of the bagpiping as the World Piping Championships were hosted here during our stay.Read more

Die Nacht war gesellig. Ein paar nette Wanderer haben uns an ihr Feuer eingeladen, nachdem wir mit Spiritus ausgeholfen hatten. Jetzt sind dann auch unsere Weinvorräte alle.
Und es hat natürlich in der Nacht schön geregnet. Sonntag muss ich als erstes das Zelt trocken.
Aufbruch recht früh Richtung Süden.
Glasgow ist im Gegensatz zu Edinburgh etwas wilder, jünger, abgestoßener und offensichtlich nicht so wohlhabend.
Die Stadt ist interessant, aber so richtig spannend ist wohl nur das Nachtleben. Glasgow ist eine DER Musikstädte Großbritanniens.
Wir sind ein wenig rumgelaufen und das reichte dann auch schon. Zum Feiern kommen wir gern mal wieder. Wenigstens hatten wir Sonne, was man vom Nachmittag nicht behaupten kann.
Der Plan war im Dumfries & Galloway Forest Park eine letzte Wanderung am Loch Trool zu machen.
Keine Chance. Das Dreckswetter hat heute Nachmittag wieder alles gegeben.
Also Planänderung und die Anfahrt an die Ostküste statt morgen, bereits heute absolviert. Wenn’s regnet, kann man auch lange Strecken fahren.
Ein Teil der Fahrt ist der Besuch des „Hadrians Wall“.
Wir befinden uns nämlich wieder im Grenzgebiet zwischen England und Schottland. Und schon kommen die Prügeleien zwischen den Lagern wieder auf den Besichtigungsplan.
Der Wall zieht und zog sich nahe der heutigen Grenze über 117 km von West nach Ost. Erbaut vom römischen Kaiser Hadrian ca. 122-128 n. Chr.
Bis zu diesem Wall ging das römische Reich, und um die Eineanderung von irischen und Schottischen Volksstämmen zu verhindern, ließ er dieses Bollwerk errichten. Selbstverdtändlich aber auch um beim Warenverkehr und von Reisenden anständig abzukassieren.
Natürlich haben wir auch endlich echte Galloways gesehen. Mal sehen, was heute Abend auf den Teller kommt.
Heute machen wir mal was ganz Verrücktes und übernachten auf unserer Schottland Rundreise in England.
Unser Platz ist ein englisches Country House in den North Pennines. Ganz nette Gegend hier. Das Restaurant ist um 8 reserviert und morgen gibt’s nochmal schönes Wetter. Wir sind gespannt.Read more

Nous nous baladons jusqu’à 15h pour trouver un bar qui diffuserait le match des Celtics.

Also mein neuer Lebensmittelpunkt ist jetzt für ein paar Tage in Newcastle upon Tyne, gestern hatte ich jedoch die geniale Idee einen Tages trip nach Glasgow zu machen, weil ich noch nicht da gewesen bin und es mir aber zumindest mal anschauen wollte. Ich mit der Information im Hinterkopf, dass in Schottland Bahnstreiks stattfinden, komme ich nachdem ich mir die Stadt ein bisschen angeschaut habe zurück zum Bahnhof, um heraus zu finden, keine Züge mehr an dem Tag. Dummerweise lag der Schlafsack mit meinen anderen Sachen in meinem Hostelzimmer in Newcastle, also draußen schlafen war bei 10° und Regen außerfrage, ein Hostel für eine Nacht also. Im Hostel waren ziemlich coole Menschen mit denen ich die ganze Nacht irgendwelchen Blödsinn geredet habe. Am nächsten Tag verschlafe ich dann auch prompt und bin jetzt auf dem Weg zurück nach Edinburgh und danach nach Hause.Read more

Goedemorgen!
Vandaag staat de reis naar Glasgow op het progamma

Vandaag is de enige dat ik in Glasgow ben.
Ik kom om 14:30 aan in mijn hostel aan en ga direct de stad in.

Als eerst ga ik naar de kathedraal van Glasgow met daarbij de necropolis. Hier loop ik een poosje rondt.

Doordat ik pas om 16:00 hier weg loop staan veel bezienswaardigheden op het punt om dicht te gaan.
Hierom besluit ik om opnieuw door de stad lopen en zoveel mogelijk van de stad te zien.

Glasgow spreekt mij niet zo aan.
Het enige wat mij erg aanspreekt aan deze plek is de street art. Deze is erg mooi.

Om 18:30 besluit ik naar mijn hostel te gaan.
Het is namelijk was dag, en dit neemt altijd aardig wat tijd in beslag.

Al mijn andere kamer genoten zijn op dit moment ook op de kamer, dus samen kletsen wij de rest van de avond.

Om 23;00 ga ik naar bed.Read more

Giornata impegnativa per i piedi.
Sveglia presto (le 8 sono presto in vacanza, no?) e abbondante colazione scozzese (non mettiamo foto per evitare di essere giudicati... 😝)
Si parte alla volta del Riverside Museum (museo dei mezzi di trasporto), con una gradevole temperatura esterna di 16 gradi 🥶. Qualche oretta in questo museo e poi si procede verso il Kelvingrove Museum (con intermezzo musicale d'organo) che contiene un po' di tutto: arte, egizio, animali morti, paccottiglia varia (storica, ovviamente) etc. etc. Il tutto in un bel palazzo vittoriano. Visto che è tardi e lo stomaco brontola, si cammina fino ad Ashton Lane per un veloce pranzo giapponese tradizionale da Ramen Dayo. Per concludere il pomeriggio, passeggiata nelle umide serre del giardino botanico (la temperatura è salita a 28 gradi 🥵, con tanto sole in città). Poi viaggio in metro per raggiungere il People's Palace (i piedi sono stanchi 🤣) che è una sorta di museo della gente di Glasgow, e per finire una visita guidata alla birreria Tennent's con (abbondante) degustazione finale 😎.

Kirche in Glasgow

Heute haben Verena und ich nach dem Frühstück und einem schönen Vormittag einen Ausflug nach Glasgow gemacht. ☺️ Da haben wir uns in einer Kirche mit zwei Gemeindemitgliedern getroffen, um für die Gemeinde in Glasgow einen neuen Raum für die Gottesdienste zu finden. ✨
Die Kirche war sehr schön und die Menschen waren auch sehr nett.
Die Fahrten hin und zurück waren auch nett. ☺️ Es ist nicht viel passiert, aber es war trotzdem ein schöner Ausflug. 🚙☺️Read more

The Rangers soccer team lost to Germany last night, so the city is in mourning and should be somewhat quieter tonight! Soccer is huge here in Glasgow and there’s an intense rivalry between the Catholic favored green team (Celtics) and the Protestant /Unionist blue team (Rangers). It’s not only a sports rivalry, but also a political and religious rivalry. In some pubs, jerseys are not allowed!

A local tour guide took us on a 3 1/2 walking tour of Glasgow! Glasgow is located on the River Clyde. Its architecture is 19th century Victorian and the Art Nouveau influence from Charles Mackintosh. I really like his style. The Glasgow Cathedral, now the Church of England, sits high on a hill. This city was voted a World Culture City. The people are a joy and the among the friendliest I’ve encountered. There are street musicians scattered around the shopping areas. And of course, lots of pubs here, too, with their brews and whisky. The city has an edgy, artsy feel and lots of graffiti murals on buildings. While Edinburgh is all about royalty and government, Glasgow is all about culture and a laid-back way of life. They are also very much involved in social issues. It’s a safe city. Police in Scotland don’t carry guns. There is strict gun control. Right now the issue is knife control, I guess. But crime is low.

We did a little shopping and more walking since the weather was once again perfect and then took an hour break before heading out for dinner at the 2nd Mackintosh on Willow which has a completely different menu…more like a real tearoom.

These feet traveled about 8 miles today and are very tired!
