      Honister pass 599 mnv

      July 28, 2022 in England ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Doma. Spokojno. Hladen veter mrši lase, pordeči lica, a ogreje srce. Če Bog da... Se vrneva. Vsaj za 14 dni. Na zadnjo noč naju bo v sanje zazibalo žuborenje potoka...Read more

Day 2 - to Honnister Haus

      June 28, 2017 in England ⋅ ☀️ 10 °C

After climbing up from Black Sail YHA... (where Zac, Ethan & Lachie raced ahead and chatted with Ray, Phil & Alan), we had to find an old mine cart train track and head in to the next valley to find Honnister Haus YHA half way down.

Everyone we had been walking with were heading further down the valley to Borrowdale, so they would have a shorter walk tomorrow. We were glad to finish early and chill out for a while. Tomorrow shouldn't be too difficult, although the weather isn't really supposed to clear up that much just yet.

      Seatoller

      October 15, 2021 in England ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

On a beautiful sunny day, I left the hotel at Old Trafford at 10.00 and drove the short distance to Altrincham on the A56.
8 Stamford Street where my ancestors, the Ernills, live in the late 19th century, had been redevoloped. However, 14 Kingsway was still the 19th century building. where Samuel Ernill had opened a butcher's in about 1880 with the family, including my grandmother, living above. It was an empty unit now. I spoke to two gentlemen who knew George Ernill who had died in recent years after closing the business, not having a son to take on the business. They said that he hadn't maintained the property or provided proper heating. His daughter and grandchildren live nearby in Downham.
Driving back down the A56, I travelled on the M60 and M61 before joining the M6. I stopped at the Teebay Services near Jct 39 for lunch; a homemade steak pie and vegetables. The Services had appeared on a TV programme about Lake District businesses and the encouragement of local suppliers. The farm shop was very busy.
I continued on to the next junction, joining the A66 to Keswick which was also very busy. A B road went the 8 miles down Borrowdale to Seatoller where Glaramara House was situated. I arrived there at 15.00, having been delayed a few minutes by a herd of sheep being brought down the road.
My single room, although with a double bed, looked out at the fell behind the hotel. Two fell ponies were in the field.
The briefing for the Explore group was at 18.00. There were 12 in the group; two Fionas, Elizabeth, Sarah, Paula, Louise, Jennifer, Rebecca, Sven, Jeremy, Robert and myself. The leaders, Glaramara staff, were Tom and Dwayne. The group were there for 6 nights and 5 days.
Dinner was at the hotel, the first of many good meals.
      Mileage: 138.

A Battle of Wills.. and Ginny Won!

      June 18, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

A mixed bag of a day today 🤔.. Slept well at a little park up just off a mountain road but when I wanted to get going this morning Ginny DiCamper had other ideas and wouldn't start!
I didn't panic though... I coached her gently with a few well chosen words and eventually managed to start her with my jump start pack - don't really know how; not even sure it was switched on properly, but it was enough to make Ginny to decide to play ball - not for long though!
Problem No.2 reared its head when the cable from my van battery to my hab area came off due to me messing around with the van battery. I still didn't panic though...
With the van started I thought I would just get on my way and sort out the loose cable later.
Off on a little jaunt to Castlerigg Stone Circle, all went well and I enjoyed a homemade icecream after my short walk. Feeling brave I decided I show Ginny who's boss after letting me down first thing so I planned a route to take me over Honister Pass - and that's where I was proved to be very wrong...
After attempting to coax Ginny up the steep roads, generally in 1st gear, Ginny put me firmly in my place by completely overheating and steaming from her engine like Thomas the Tank...
Like a pro, I still didn't panic - and managed to pull over at Honiton Slate Mine. After a quiet sit down and a cup of tea, I realised that Ginny is very much the boss and was going no further up Honister Pass so I would need to replan my route.
Sheepfaced, I waited for the engine to cool and topped up the water and refixed the loose cable...
With one final show of her ' Boss' status, Ginny threw a wobbly on the way back down the pass when I needed to pull over for an oncoming vehicle to pass. She hit a pothole and made a very convincing sound like I'd hit the dry stone wall at the side of the road... Not again I thought 🥺..
As soon as I was able I pulled over to check for damage.. This time Lady Luck and Ginny had smiled on me - no damage, just Ginny throwing away a hub cap in disgust at me.
So now I've headed to the North West coast for the evening..sitting by the sea at Maryport.
Not sure if this competes with our local Welsh coastline but it'll do nicely 🙂
