Landed off the grid start point

      August 2, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

An earlier rise to farm the corgis to our daughter before navigating the security queues @ CPH. Stats not bad at 30 mins from drop off to leaving the extra 3rd World security check at terminal E.😉
The good weather took a rain check, which revealed its colours on arrival at Manchester. The standard baggage delay ensured our departure missed by 2 minutes at the train terminal. On a positive note, saved 18 € on delayed ticket! 🤭
Arriving at Stone, the clouds had relented, so no dripping wet clothes. Short trip to my mums by taxi spent down digging old school memories from my early youth! The taxi driver was from the same school year & school! Names of pupils and former teachers throwen about, revealed we were at different inflexions of the scale .
Didn't realise the old memory cells were still functioning , 😆
In all trip time 8 hrs!

It all started in 1755 !

      August 9, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

      The birth place.

This 'off the grid' holiday break opportunity stems from the foresight of Liverpool merchants from nearly 300 years ago!

Traffic was heavy on the trip south. In front of us a single woman was fortunate to gain the service of a renowned face from Facebook Robb to assist her in navigating the first five locks.
Bless his daily efforts to help people on their way. In fact, contra to CRT regulations, he deliberately left the paddle open to fill the lock for US..
      Big thank you from me.

Our gain was lost after extending our lunch break. 2 boats jumped ahead, so it caused further delays on the next set of locks.
But hey, we are chilling off the grid enjoying the moment.

      Standon Church

      August 10, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Squeezed between a working Canal Boat and a poor man's cruiser, it felt like we were breaking equitte! Our hemp deflectors were literally kissing both our neighbours' deflectors. A short walk to my favourite Marks & Spencer food shop revealed that boaters usually left a good meter between mooring line🤫
To avoid issues, we shipped out early to our destination - Standon Church.
After a sediate cruise enjoying the warm sunny weather, we arrived at our destination. Reality was a nerve-wracking walk, dodging high-speed vehicles exceeding 60km/hrs along the country lane.
The steep rise to the church revealed an enchanting view of the countryside beyond the ancient graveyard. Wandering among the graves presented the curse of child mortality from earlier times. Revealing the curse strikes both poor and rich! Note that all these graves indicate the local gentry. Poor families couldn't afford burial sites. Records dated back to 1311😶😶.
After a safe return to our Angela, the cruise continued to a final pub lunch before returning to Stone for our final night.

      Final Day

      August 11, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

So, another vacation draws to a close! Off the grid works for me. Visiting glimmers of former times, sinks home the advances we have accomplished the last 200 years.
Unfortunately, time and events reveal that we have not learned the lessons. Mankind's greed to satisfy his grievance affects the future of all, especially our planet Earth.

Our final journey started smoothly, returning Angela to her waiting sisters !

Then, the everyday issues appeared! Booked taxi to collect us from my mother's, allowing a 20-minute window to the train station.
Fortunately, my instincts suspected a delay confirmed after ringing to the taxi firm. Thanks, guys, for the update. Plan B executed without a hitch, thanks to mums neighbour.

Well, it Friday! Feeder train 3 minutes late, Fortunately, connection to Manchester was on the same platform (3&4). So, the guard shut the doors as we ventured into the packed coach!

Well, Manchester airport security lived up to its reputation! Warning notice advised passengers to remove all usual suspect objects. Failure to comply would enforce a 30-minute delay before resolution of the offending objects. Stuttered through without any extra inspection.

I am grateful that my Scottish principles pushed me to take the cheaper EasyJet option. SAS cancelled their flight. The usual 30-minute delay was also included, now we jutted wanted to get home.

So the final hurdle was the Danish Immigration check point, poorly manned on a late Friday evening.

      Trip over.....

      Pottery and lockery.

      May 26 in England ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

We cast off this morning around 9:30. The weather forecast this morning was for heavy rain and so we had waterproofs at the ready. In the end the weather was quite sunny!

The modern Wedgwood factory stands a short distance from the canal on the other site of Trentham. Josiah Wedgwood saw the benefit of the canal to his business and persuaded the designers to build it through Stoke and right past his original factory. Completed in 1777, the canal brought raw materials in and importantly, finished goods out. The slow smooth ride allowed safe delivery of the delicate pottery around the country and around the world. These days everything is moved by lorry, but that allows us to enjoy the canal in relative peace.

We moored up outside the factory and walked to the visitor centre. After a pleasant cup of tea and cake (or pancakes for some of us) we walked the shop and then around the V&A museum. At this point we realised our tea cups from earlier retail for around £50 each! After lunch we set off once again and tackled the remaining 8 locks for the day (there was just one earlier as we passed through Trentham).

The forecast for this afternoon was accurate and we faced biblical rain and hail showers. Both skipper and crew got so wet we may as well have jumped in the canal! Edward helped with most locks today, he’s thoroughly enjoying his time aboard.

Passing through Stone the large Joule’s Brewery is another industry to sit on the side of the canal. The now closed large doors still evident of a time when beer was transported by boat. One may be forgiven when passing the boat yard in the town centre that this is just another yard. This is in fact the base of the Canal Cruising Company - the pioneer of canal boating holidays.

The Star pub pre-dates the canal by 200 years and holds the record for the number of floors at different levels in a single pub. Here we had an audience as the last lock of the day was effectively in the pub beer garden!

After this we stopped at the water point where the skipper got another drenching from the tap. The crew went to explore the floating market. Dozens of canal traders were moored here for the weekend and by the time we arrived all but one or two had shut up shop for the day.

We are moored for the night just south of Stone.

      Wash Dale Lane, Stone, Stoke-on-Trent

      August 21, 2022 in England ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

We’d decided to try to stay overnight on one of the Park4Night recommended spots. The one we chose was near Stoke on Trent in Wasdale Lane. It was a very quiet spot, with nobody else there, until a German camper van arrived around midnight. There were some dog walkers, who arrived quite early as there are excellent walks nearby in National Trust woods.Read more
