Bunker Hill Covered Bridge

Almost the last of the 300 covered bridges built throughout the North Carolina area. Fantastic to see although the modern free youth of today respect their history with paint cans and filthy graffiti.
Doug: The primary reason for covering the bridges was to protect the Timbers from the weather. Sun, rain and snow would deteriorate the timber faster and only get 20 years maybe, but covered they would last 100 years or more. This is why it was so common in the northern states.
A secondary benefit was the roof integrated into the structure made the structure stronger and could support more weight.Read more
