Day 2 - Blues Blast Awards

      September 14, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Today was super awesome. We drove to Rockford to get to the hotel. When we stopped in we instantly saw Bob Corritore and Tail Dragger. After chatting briefly we went to our room and got ready. We then went to the venue and helped with the set up.

During the night we backed up Alistair Greene, Mighty Mike Schermer, Bob Corritore with Oscar Wilson, Tail Dragger, and Diuna, then Dawn Tyler Watson. During the Bob Corritore set ske random dude ran up on stage and started playing absolutely terrible keyboards. It was outrageous.

After our set there was a huge jam that featured Oscar, Diuna, and I believe Mary Lane or Teeny Tucker. They did back up vocals for him plus call and response. Also on stage was Bob and Igor Prado. I kind of messed up the ending but we saved it (Thrill is Gone).

The last song was an Elmore James style tune fronted mostly by Whitney Shay. She did a great job and seemed to really enjoy the music. We also had another harmonica player come up, plus Dawn Tyler Watson who did a harmonica solo but just making harmonica sounds (sounded legit. She also did a trombone like solo during one of her tunes and did Night Train). One of the other ladies also came up briefly. Mighty Mike was also on stage and Ben Rice. Tail Dragger even made his way up.

All in all it was a great night. We all played great and I got to really show all I can do in different styles. It was a great honor getting to play with all of the legends, new guys, and all in between.

      Dorothy Smith retiree

      July 18, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 79 °F

Tuesday was a full day of traveling. We stopped to meet Sandy. Sandy and Larry will be getting married in 2 weeks. They met in “Grief Share” and connected right away. Larry’s wife, Jenny passed away from Covid 2 years ago. And Sandy’s husband died of cancer just one year ago.

As we drove towards Moline, I saw a sign that said “Swing Bridge”. Nice stop to stretch our legs.

And another stop was in Dixon, Illinois - the hometown where Ronald. Regan grew up. Of course the homestead was closed.

And our final stop was to have dinner with Dorothy Smith, another Avant retiree who got married later in life and has a rich history with CEF. She worked in Costa Rica. She so loved the gift bag of “goodies” we gave her and told her that we appreciated her many years of service with Camino Global now Avant. She fed us well, and we continued on our way to Fisher, Illinois, arriving just as it was getting dark.

Now our next adventure, to keep the 3 youngest, Elizabeth, 5, Annie, 3 and Amanda 1 for the next 10 days while Ellen, Luke and the 3 oldest, David, 12, Emily, 10 and Lucy 8 fly to Nicaragua and serve on a mission trip.

Day 3 - Hope and Anchor

      September 15, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Tonight’s gig was at an English Pub. Oddly enough most of the food was Irish not English. There was a good crowd consisting of a great deal of local blues society members. I included two pictures of me; apparently the photographer likes code ups.

I tried Lancashire hot pot which is lam and onions wit carrots, topped with scalloped potatoes. Not bad. I want to mention I gave the waitress a 25 percent tip and hen i went to break a five I saw a customer motioning to her I was right behind her. She was criticizing my tip it sounded like. Oh well. At least I played a good floater, although I lost my drum pad so I didn’t get to warm up.

      Morning

      February 2, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ❄️ 16 °F

It's morning again. Not favorite tries to make me eat the same kibble that I didn't eat yesterday! There was ice under the snow when I went outside, and it was very slippery! It's dark out. So dark that not favorite didn't realize it was after 7. Good thing our next trailer stuff doesn't pick up until 1!Read more
