      Grinnell Glacier

      September 20, 2022 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 2 °C

Tue 20th Sept. First hike in Glacier National Park and it was excellent however very chilly. Got down to 3.2°C overnight and it was about 5.5°C and cloudy when we set off for our hike, with fresh dusting of snow on the mountains - certainly had to break into our winter wardrobe. The hike went alongside Swiftcurrent Lake and Lake Josephine before starting to climb steady above the emerald colour of Grinnell Lake. Again I loved all the reds and greens of the rocks, and with the white dusting of snow was just so picturesque walking up the valley. Near the top, there was a black grizzly bear quite a distance away, so wasn't able to get a good photo. The end of the hike was at Upper Grinnell Lake (1992m), with Grinnell Glacier behind it. Definitely one lake I had no intention of swimming in, with the water temperature measured at 1.9°C, and the air temperature at 5.3°C, it was gloves, hat and three upper layers of clothes. On the way back down we went along the top of Lake Josephine and took the track to Grinnell Lake and a little side detour up to Hidden Falls. Then back we went continuing along the south side track past the Lakes and coming out at the massive Many Glacier Hotel, which was opened in July 1915. It is only open about 12 weeks of the year - July to September, it is already closed for the season, as it can get up to 60 ft of snow here - up to the third floor of the hotel. As we were heading back to the van at 4.40pm the sun finally decided to make an apperance but it was still cold about 10°C. Normally we look forward to a can of Pepsi when we get back from a hike, today all we wanted was a cup of hot chocolate. Hike stats: 24.65 km, active time 5 hrs 48, elevation gain 747m. Steps V 38722. It is now 9.30 pm and the temperature outside is 1.4°C burrr.Read more

      Glacier National Park, Montana

      July 22, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

We left Banff and again enjoyed the scenic drive along the Trans-Canada Highway. Past Calgary however the scenery was rather different - this was cowboy country. Wide open and flat prairies, with a house every couple of kilometres and a 'town' every 45 minutes or so, all against the backdrop of the distant Rockies to the west which we tracked all the way to the American border.

Just the other side of the border crossing is the 'town' of Babb - a gas station, general store (looking like something out of Victorian Britain), and a church were about the only things in it...I'm not even sure where the houses were. So we filled up the car and headed into Glacier National Park - what a sight. Something like Banff crossed with Monument Valley. The colours of the mountains was incredible, and photos do neither them nor the scale any justice. The road in was rather rough, but we eventually made it to our 'historic cabin', a little two room wooden hut nestled in Swiftcurrent valley.

We had a bison burger for dinner from the hotel up the road, a Swiss-chalet-looking affair on the edge if Swiftcurrent Lake before taking an evening stroll to Fishercap Lake where we watch some moose and deer splashing about in the water. The creek we crossed on the way was full of the most colourful array of stones from the surrounding mountains and the trees and flower meadows were alive with colour. But perhaps most striking was the crystal clear reflection of the mountains in the lake as the sun went down.

Of course, all this awe and wonder was balanced by the fact we were surrounded by buzzing things and I got bitten to hell despite having layers of deet on! On the plus side, we bought a massive bag of trail mix for tomorrow.

      We hiked how far??

      September 23, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 6 °C

Heading back, a beautiful Golden Eagle flew over. Then, arriving back at Red Rock Lake, we spotted Grizzly #1 across the lake and up slope... with a buddy! Grizzly #7.
Returning to the car after our 7.6 round trip hike, we saw another two Grizzlies, #8 & #9, up slope. A good distance away was the first group of Big Horn Sheep. As we drove out we shared the road, and a moment, with another group of 8 Big Horn Sheep mommas and babies. So. AWESOME! It was a beautiful day in Glacier NP! We headed back to the resort for our last evening of packing and sleep.Read more

What a difference a week makes

      September 23, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 6 °C

As we drove the highway and made the turn to go to the east side of Glacier NP, we were treated to a winter preview. Logan Pass proved to be inaccessible, again... but, we moved on to Many Glacier.
