  • Pilisszentlászló to Visegrád (#16)

    February 21, 2021 in Hungary ⋅ ☁️ 3 °C

A cold, icy, muddy, foggy and beutiful, special winterwonderland walk.
After some car shuffling we set off with Laci to try to catch up with the other Muhis (and their +ones) who had a head start. We eventually found them a couple of hours later and completed the rest of the hike all together. The bean soup was well deserved at the end in Visegrad.

  • Hévíz to Keszthely (#3)

    June 15, 2020 in Hungary ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

The pain and the number of the blisters seemed to grow by the morning so Vera decided to hop on a bus for the last bit. Thomas the lovag, however, remained unstoppable and powerwalked the last kilometers to Keszthely. On the way he discovered the Festetics Kastely (palace) and some of the city which seemed beautiful even in the cloudy, grim weather. The 3 days mission is complete!

  • Zalaszántó to Hévíz (#3)

    June 14, 2020 in Hungary ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

With more humid weather, steeper hills, and yesterday's blisters to contend with, we were a little slower today. We did find the motivation for quite a big detour to Rezi Vár (Castle ruins) which was well worth it for the view.
We passed through the lovely little village of Rezi and stopped for a lemonade at a great country pub where we also collected a stamp.
The last couple of hours were quite tough to get through so we were gald to reward ourselves with a swim in Hévíz thermal lake at the end. We had also managed to get through the whole day without the forecasted storm ever catching us.

Length - 16.9km (+ detour to Rezi Vár)
    Days - 2/3
    Time - 7 hours
    Stamps - 3
    Up and Down - 355m, 425m

  • Sümeg to Zalaszántó (#3)

    June 13, 2020 in Hungary ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

We travelled to Sümeg on Friday evening to be ready to start early on Saturday.
After leaving our very strange horse farm accommodation (pretty grim but great breakfast), we went up the hill to Sümegi Vár (Castle). A new entry in our top 3 castles ranking!
It was a hot and sunny walk, mostly through fields and forests and very beautiful. Towards the end of the day we arrived at Europe's biggest stupa, a very strange sight in the Hungarian countryside but interesting to see. We also picked up a bonus stamp here from the vendors outside selling hippy stuff.
We were very worn out when we gratefully checked into our next accommodation, where we were welcomed with a pálinka, not bad.

Length - 21.5km (+ detour to Sümegi vár)
    Days - 1 of 3
    Time - 7 hours
    Stamps - 2 (+1)
    Up and Down - 425m, 405m

  • Balatonhenye to Nagyvázsony (#6)

    June 1, 2020 in Hungary ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

This final part of the longer stage 6 begins close to Balatonakali so we were able to include it in a weekend away with the Muhi klán.
We were joined by Laci, Adél, Anna and Cseh and only went the wrong way once.
It was a mostly quite flat walk with lots of beautiful scenery as we headed north-east away from Balaton towards Bakony.

    Length - 14.9km
    Days - 1
    Time - 4 hours
    Stamps - 2
    Up and Down - 260m, 230m

  • Hűvösvölgy to Rozália Téglagyár (#14)

    May 23, 2020 in Hungary ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Today we completed the first section of a continuous trail which stretches all the way across Hungary from the Austrian border to the Ukrainian border, known as the Blue (Kék) tour.
We chose a short section close to Budapest for our first part so that we could do it in one day.
It was quite a hilly route, more than we expected, but we really enjoyed escaping the city for the first time since the lockdown started. There were some great views from lookout points along the way and the route is very easy to follow.
The only downside was that the second of three stamps was missing!

    Length - 14. 2km
    Days - 1
Time - 4:35 (including lunch break)
    Stamps - 3
    Up and down - 525m, 625m
