This name looked like Wendel, and since Luxembourg borders Germany on its eastern side, I thought this may have been an alternate spelling from a long time ago.
I found out that the path was in honor of Wenceslas II, Duke of Luxembourg from 1383 and 1419. While he was Duke (remember Luxembourg is ruled by a Duke, not a King), they put up part of the 3rd ring of fortifications that was supposed to help protect the people living in the valley.
