  • World War I

    July 28, 2025 in Luxembourg ⋅ ⛅ 66 °F

This was called "Gëlle Fra" (or Golden Lady in English). It is to remember the approximately 3,000 Luxembourg soldiers that died in World War I.

  • Grrrrr

    July 28, 2025 in Luxembourg ⋅ ⛅ 68 °F

So apparently, the type of train I booked (TGV) doesn't leave from this station. They told me where to go, and because I don't have a lot of time, I got a taxi. Hopefully I can make my train, because I have a connection after that. This train is to Lorraine, and then I got to Strasbourg.Read more

  • Grrrrrr again

    July 28, 2025 in France ⋅ ☁️ 70 °F

So either i misunderstood, or they told me the wrong information, but I ended up taking a taxi to the wrong place (which cost me €70). Thankfully, there is a different train I can take (going to Metz, France), but it leaves very soon!Read more

  • Money

    July 29, 2025 in France ⋅ ☁️ 68 °F

This is the street where Alsace's mint was located. You can make a guess that it had something to do with money based on the French name for the street.

  • Tanners

This is the area of Petite France where the tanners worked. They needed the open ventilation at the top of the buildings, but it was never renovated.

  • Brewers' Star

    July 29, 2025 in France ⋅ ☁️ 68 °F

I learned a new fact about the 5-point star. The main modern use is for the Jewish religion (i.e., the Star of David), however a use that was around much longer, according to our guide, was for brewers. Each part of the star was usually divided into either 2 lines joined at a point or a triangle. Each set would represent something depending on the culture. For example, here, they usually represented the elements (brewers were considered alchemists)Read more

  • Café Yvonne

    July 29, 2025 in France ⋅ ⛅ 72 °F

Had lunch at Café Yvonne. One of the specialties of this region is Coq au Reisling. It's chicken cooked in Reisling wine sauce. It wasn't as good as I hoped, but still not bad!

  • Aquaduck

    July 29, 2025 in France ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

This mini-aquaduct features the god Janus in the middle. Janus was a god with two heads. This aquaduct symbolizes Strasbourg's place as a river crossing between the Atlantic and its source in the Alps.Read more

  • Flammeküche

    July 29, 2025 in France ⋅ ☁️ 68 °F

I meet up with my friend Markus again tonight for our official Flammeküche dinner. We ended up getting 3. The first was the original (apparently you typically start with that one) which had cream bacon and onions. Then we did the Munster which was the same, but had Munster cheese (my favorite). And we finished with one that had a type of beef (in the picture) but it looked like ham shavings. Great dinner!Read more

  • Inside

    July 30, 2025 in France ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

There are 24 languages that are used so that all countries can be equally represented. One thing I learned about their interpretation services was about less common languages. Interpretaters always listen to their non-native language, and then speak their native language. The exception is the less common languages. While it may be easier to find somebody who speaks Romanian and Hungarian, finding aomebody who speaks Romanian and Dutch may be quite hard. So they use a "relay" language. They will listed to the interpretation of a language they do know (for example English) and will then interpret it into English. So instead of Romainian to Dutch, it may go Romainian to English to Dutch.Read more
