  • Lake Pukaki

    April 29, 2017 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 9 °C

We are in the most beautiful spot! For the first time on our trip We are completely alone- no other campers in sight. We are parked on the edge of the lake with a perfect view of Mt. Cook in front of us. (the highest mountain in NZ) The best part about this spot is it's free! We found a free public dumping station earlier today so we are filled with water and ready to go for a few days. We went for a chilly evening swim to wash off. Andreas lasted in the water a bit longer than I did. We spent the rest of the night exploring the lake. Andreas found a few natural whips- he got pretty good at taking the tops off of the local mushrooms.Read more

  • Arthur's Pass

    May 1, 2017 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 9 °C

Go caving they said... it will be fun they said....

We have been told that a South Island must do is caving through an underground street in Arthur's Pass. It is about 1 hour walking underground and the water is up to your waist at points. Today also happened to be the coldest day yet on our trip. All the mountains have a fresh coat of snow, all puddles are frozen, and the ground is covered in frost.

Andreas somehow convinced me that it is a perfect day for spelunking. We put on our head lamps, hiking shoes, warm jackets, shorts and set off. In the entrance to the giant cave, we immediately jumped into freezing water up to our stomachs. We walked for about 30 minutes in the underground glacier stream. Our lower limbs soon went numb. We saw some cool rock formations- no glow worms. My headlamp stopped working about 15 min in which made for some excitement. We decided to turn around after making it through some very fast rushing waterfalls(was a flash flood coming? Who knows)- we were also freezing and I was terrified. We made it out alive and our feet very painfully thawed out. We are now enjoying the powerful heater in the campervan. It is safe to say that glacial spelunking is 'not my thing' although I bet Andreas would give it another go.

  • Nelson

    May 3, 2017 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌙 9 °C

We had a great two days in Nelson visiting with the Marwick family. We had a tomato soup lunch and a walk around the peninsula at Nan's place. Katrina and Tony had a big dinner for everyone at their place. Josh cooked the delicious tandoori chicken and another spicy curry. Nick was overcome by the spiciness of the chillies. Yesterday we had a great lunch on the harbor with Hellen.Read more
