Manu National Park

The Manu National Park is deep in the Amazon Rainforest. It took two long days to get in and the same to get out and there is no quicker option available in an emergency which is why our guide carried an anti-venom kit and we all wore rubber boots!

It is also pristine primary rainforest and a UNESCO protected biosphere and world heritage site.

We were here for the wildlife and were pleased to see about 35 new species of birds, 8 species of Monkey plus Capybara, Tapir, Giant Anteater and a family of Giant River Otters. Alas no Jaguar or Anaconda this time.

We had a wonderful chef with us who prepared lovely cooked meals on the boat.

These were hard and long days and you had to work hard for the wildlife sightings but it was an amazing experience to be deep in the Amazon Jungle for 6 days.

I am writing this once we are back in Cusco and indeed at the airport about to fly to Chile.Læs mere

Cusco and Goodbye Peru

We have used Cusco as our base for birding the Manu Road, doing the Inca Trek and then heading to the Amazon Rainforest. Altogether we have had four short stays here.

It is a lovely city which we haven’t hugely explored but here are some pics of what we did see.

Atacama Desert

Yesterday we arrived in the Atacama Desert, the driest place on earth. We picked up our 4x4 pickup and did some food shopping. Then moved to our accommodation - an apartment in the sticks.

Today we planned to go to some lagoons but they were closed. So instead we visited an old beat up bus nicknamed the Magic Bus and then took a walk in Mars Valley.

Poor Sam caught a head cold on the flight and with the altitude isn’t feeling great. Hopefully he will be better soon.

Tonight we are taking an astronomy session which should be really interesting.Læs mere

We have spent the last few days chilling with Sam but also getting out and exploring some of the sights around here.

We visited a lagoon with lots of flamingos (Andean, Chilean and James’). We also had a night observing the stars on an Astro tour which included looking through the largest private telescope in the world at another galaxy.

We went out to watch the sunset over the impressive valley of the moon. And then today we took a long dirt track to 4,300m to see the El Tatio Geyser field - over 85 active geysers over a 10km square area. More wildlife too and a walk in this barren habitat.Læs mere

Bolivian High Andes

Yesterday we were up at 5am to drive up to 4,600m and bizarrely cross the border into Bolivia at a checkpoint in the middle of nowhere on a simple dirt track. As soon as we were in Bolivia we transferred to trusted Toyota Land-Cruiser 4x4 as the only way to move over this tough terrain.

Yesterday we visited numerous lagoons, volcanic geysers, volcanos and the like. All over 4000m so the air was very thin. It was very cold too on occasion - perhaps -10C.

Today we had a more relaxed day travelling around the high Andes seeing strange rock formations, more lagoons and an old “Wild West” style town.

So far we have driven 450km in Bolivia - all off road. We ended the day near the salt flats which we will be visiting tomorrow.Læs mere

Salar de Uyuni

Yesterday we visited the largest salt flats in the world over 10,500km2 in size.

We arrived before sunrise and it was a real wow moment to share together as a family. The light was lovely to fire off some photos too.

We continued to an “island” covered in cactuses and had some breakfast. We then had some fun making some silly photos which benefited from the lack of perspective here.

A really amazing place which is a highlight of our trip so far.

Leaving the salt flats we visited the train cemetery. When the age of steam came to an end in Bolivia they retired all the trains here and about a 100 engines are rusting away slowly as it is so dry.

It has been harsh conditions over the last few days. High (we have been from 3,600-5,000m), cold (minus 10 C at times) and very dry, dusty and windy. The hotels have no heating, mixed results re hot water or flushing toilets, and you always have dust in your nose and are coughing. We always said this was an adventure tho!

We are now back in Chile where they have roads again. Tomorrow we fly back to Santiago and two days later Sam heads home.Læs mere

Gran Torre Santiago

Today we popped out for some shopping and then went up the highest building in South America a Gran Torre at 300m.

It was nice to see views of the sprawl of Santiago from the top as well as the snow-capped mountains to the east of the city.

Tomorrow Sam heads home and we are off to Buenos Aires, Argentina.Læs mere

Today we walked around BA city seeing some of the highlights.

The main square and the balcony where Evita addressed the crowd. The 23m high Floralis Genérica sculpture which opens and closes each day. A walk around the museum of fine arts. And lastly a visit to Recoleta Cemetry where the rich and famous are buried including Evita (Eva Perón)Læs mere
