  • Day 12 - The Last Leg...

    28. juni 2017, Forenede Stater ⋅ ⛅ 63 °F

Well, we are in the home stretch! We are only about 5 hours from my parent's house. We can do 5 hours (~320 miles) without blinking!

We slept late and powered up on a great breakfast. The Hampton Inn & Suites Cazenovia had cheese omelettes, French toast sticks, bacon and croissants along with the normal cereals, coffee, make your own waffles and other goodies. My favorite breakfast so far.

The area around our hotel was absolutely beautiful. Very New England like (don't let a New Yorker hear me say that). 😉

  • End of Day 12 - End of the First Leg

    28. juni 2017, Forenede Stater ⋅ 🌙 61 °F

    Day 12 Miles: 330.7
    Total Miles: 4,538.9
    States: 16
    Countries: 2

We added Massachusetts to our list of states. That gives us 16 so far for the summer!

We made it to West Bridgewater. Now we'll take about a week or so to relax before we make the long journey home. The first leg of the trip was pretty awesome! We saw a lot of great things both big and small. Our journey home will not be as many days, but we will still pack it full of great things to see.

In the meantime, we'll hang with family and rest. Don't worry, we'll keep posting during our Massachusetts respite. 😊

  • West Bridgewater & The Party

    1. juli 2017, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 73 °F

We had a great time in West Bridgewater. We saw lots of friends, family and attended my mom's yearly 4th of July party. Which everyone just calls, The Party.

It was a small affair this year. We had around 70-75 people come and go, but the largest crowd of the day was around 65 people. There have been years we had well over 120 people, so to us, 65 was small.

It was great to spend time talking with members of my family that we only get to see at The Party. A long time ago, Casey and Quinn got used to introductions that started, "These are your cousins from..." 😊

The food is always incredible with the highlight for me being the steak tips. My cousin Laura makes amazing deserts. Her cupcake mermaid blew us all away!

On our ride out, I learned that my great aunt Anna passed away. She was in her mid 90s. We went to her wake and it was really nice. I have many great memories of talking with her over the years. From when I was a little boy all the way through visiting her at her home or beach cottage. She was a wonderful woman. God bless her.

  • 4th of July

    4. juli 2017, Forenede Stater ⋅ ⛅ 70 °F

Independence Day always seems a little bit more meaningful in Boston. Unlike past years, we didn't attend a cookout (a BBQ for all you west coasters). We lounged at the pool most of the day and then went to the local fireworks.

It was a great, relaxing day with a small group of friends and family. Casey even caught some zzz's in the pool...

Oh, did I mentioned that both Little Pence and my missing backpack (left in Wisconsin) rejoined us? 😁

  • Day at the Beach - Onset, MA

    6. juli 2017, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

Onset Beach is one of my favorite places! I love to take my chair and sit out in the water. We didn't go kayaking or paddle boarding, this year. It was a little too windy.

We ran into our cousins from Pennsylvania while we were at the beach! Tom, dad and I grabbed a beer together at Quahog Republic (Wicked Good Eats, as their tag line goes).

It was a great day that ended, as always, with some pizza at Marc Anthony's and Nana's Ice Cream. As an FYI, Steve Carell's movie, The Way Way Back" was shot in Onset and at Marc Anthony's!

As I mentioned, we added two more states while staying with nana and papa, Connecticut and Rhode Island. That brings us to 18!

We had an awesome time. I wish we could have stayed longer, but the calm of the road is strong! Oh, and I only have so many vacation days. 😉

On the way home, we will take a southern route. Today we head for Philly. See you there, but first, a quick stop at Dunkin'...

  • Mystic Pizza - Mystic, CT

    8. juli 2017, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

A drive down 95 through Connecticut would not be complete without a stop at Mystic Pizza. 🍕Jenn loved the 1988 Julia Roberts movie of the same name. We didn't get any food, but I have eaten here before and the pizza is actually pretty darn good.

We stopped for a few pictures and then drove through the cute little seaside town.

    8. juli 2017, Forenede Stater ⋅ ⛅ 82 °F

Ok, it wasn't a stop, but it sure is an impressive bridge! We are spoiled, seeing the Bay Bridge and Golden Gate Bridge as commonplace and I was still impressed!

I have been to New York City many times, but I don't remember going over it, just the Tappan Zee Bridge. An impressive Bridge named after an even more impressive figure.Læs mere

  • Independence Hall - Philadelphia, PA

    8. juli 2017, Forenede Stater ⋅ ⛅ 84 °F

Ah, the Cradle of Liberty, City of Brotherly Love, king of the cheesesteak!

I have been to Philly many times and visiting Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell is always special. The building holding the bell has been upgraded, since I was there last. It is nice, well nicer, since it wasn't bad before.

We saw a copy of the Declaration of Independence that is only a month older than the one at The National Archives in Washington DC. Elbridge Gerry's copy of the second draft of The Articles of Confederation and George Washington's copy of the final draft of The Constitution.

Seeing the The Liberty Bell and hearing its history and symbolism is inspiring. Experiencing the building where both The Declaration of Independence and Constitution were debated and adopted is something else. It was a great stop. 🇺🇸

  • End of Day 22 - Harrisburg, PA

    8. juli 2017, Forenede Stater ⋅ ⛅ 73 °F

    Day 22 Miles: 436.3
    Total Miles: 5,348.5
    States: 18
    Countries: 2

We drove through five states today, but have already counted them in our total on the way out. They were Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York and Pennsylvania. So our state total stays at 18. Tomorrow will bring a few more.

No great picture for this post. The Clarion Inn (part of the Choice network, the Comfort Inn probably being the most recognizable name) was unremarkable.

There was baseball going on somewhere nearby. The place was crawling with what looked like 8-10 year olds. I don't think they were 12's or part of the Little League World Series. Williamsport is around an hour and a half away.

Harrisburg is also a bit unremarkable, but that is not uncommon for a state capital. Boston is an example of a state capital that has panache. Harrisburg seems more like Sacramento. No matter, time to rest. 😊

  • Day 23 - A Long Drive Day

    9. juli 2017, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

We don't have much planned for today. Our goal is to get close to The Great Smoky Mountain National Park and then head to Nashville. The closer we get, the more time we have.

I thought The Clarion Inn was crappy. Jenn thinks I am being to harsh, and I probably am. It was like a bad copy of a decent budget-ish hotel, like The Comfort Inn. Things were not terrible, but everything just seemed off. The WiFi sucked (not uncommon), it seemed a little dirtier, didn't smell fresh (but nothing bad) and breakfast was subpar. All first world problems, to be sure. The coffee was burned. Enough said. 😉

We stopped at Starbucks before we hit the road. Thank goodness. ☕️

  • Farnham Collossi - Unger, WV

    9. juli 2017, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

This was an interesting stop. It was really cool, but we really didn't get out of the car. Well, I did, but the rest of the family thought the place was too sketchy.

This farm is quite a ways away from the highway. We had to travel on some gravel roads that were not quite wide enough for two cars. There are no signposts announcing the farm. There was no one around and we didn't get the feeling we were really supposed to be there. Although, you would think someone who puts giant statues on there lawn want people to come see them.

It was pretty neat and I am glad we stopped, both for the oddity of the place and the journey getting there. 😊

Not far over the boarder from West Virginia into Virginia is a neat little trading post. Yet another good find by Quinn. It was right along our route, so an easy pull off.

This place has some great knick-knacks and oddities as well as snacks, ice and a rest room. We took in the sights, powered up and headed out.Læs mere

  • Dr. Pepper's Grave - Rural Retreat, TN

    9. juli 2017, Forenede Stater ⋅ ⛅ 79 °F

Dr. Charles Taylor Pepper was not the inventor of Dr. Pepper, but legend states that the drink was named after him. Dr. Pepper was a surgeon in the Civil War.

Charles Alderton is the inventor of Dr. Pepper. He created it in the 1880's in Waco, Texas. He worked in Morrison's Old Corner Drug Store. Alderton gave the soda (which customers were calling a Waco, at the time) to his boss Morrison. Morrison named it Dr. Pepper.

He at one time worked for Dr. Charles Pepper while in Tennessee. Apparently there was a bond.

There were quite a few graves in the Pepper family plot. I kept pointing at graves saying, "Wow, he's a Pepper, she's a Pepper, wouldn't you like to be a Pepper too?" My kids didn't get it, Jenn did.

Tall tale or truth? We will never know. However, Quinn wanted to stop at his grave. So we did. 😊

  • Giant Guitar - Bristol, TN

    9. juli 2017, Forenede Stater ⋅ ⛅ 81 °F

Bristol, Tennessee is a strange place. It is right next door to Bristol, Virginia. In face the state line is down State Street, which they both share.

Bristol, Virginia is the official birthplace of country music. Bristol, Tennessee has this giant guitar... It was once a museum, but is now in disrepair. It may be a radio station now, but it looked abandoned to me.

I took some pictures of it with our good camera, but can't find any of them. I could only find this one picture on my iPhone. Weird. Like the place.

We added Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia and Tennessee to our list of states. We are on the verge of driving through half the states in the country! We are also about to break the 6,000 mile mark. At just over 500 miles, this was the second longest we have driven in a day.

We stayed the night in Kingsport, Tennessee. I love their tag line, "Visit Kingsport, Tennessee. We've got stuff." I so wanted to find that on a shirt!!!

We went out to eat and played UNO. We love UNO and have many different sets. This is the first time we played UNO Emoji. It isn't too different, but I love the Draw 4 emoji. You'll have to look through the gallery to see it.

The Comfort in was clean and spacious. A great change from the crappy Clarion. Tomorrow is off to The Great Smoky Mountains and Nashville!

  • Day 24 - Pigeon Forge, TN

    10. juli 2017, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

Before you get to The Great Smoky Mountain National Park, you drive through Pigeon Forge. It is like a mix between Disney and Vegas. It was full of glitz and fun looking family places. There were comedy venues, multiple go cart tracks, animals (including sharks and alligators), and many magic and performance venues. From the outside they all looked well done.

One of the places, called Wonderworks, looked like the building was upside down!

They seemed to like to steal famous place names from all over, like King Kong, Alcatraz East, the Titanic, Smoky Mountain Opry and more. I wish we had more time to go check some of them out.

  • Great Smoky Mountain National Park

    10. juli 2017, Forenede Stater ⋅ ⛅ 82 °F

The Great Smoky Mountain National Park is the most visited national park in the country. It has land in both Tennessee and North Carolina.

Created in 1934 by Franklin Roosevelt, it was a difficult national park to make. Unlike big parks like Yellowstone and Yosemite, the federal government didn't own all of the land. The process of buying the land began in the 20's. US settlers had been in the area since the mid 1800's. Many sold the land with the condition that they could live there until they died. The last people to live in the park were gone in the 40's. There are still log cabins, churches and graveyards in the park dating to the 1800's.

The Cherokee had been in the area for hundreds of years before the settlers, but did not live specifically in what became the national park.

When Tennessee and North Carolina sold the land to the US government, they stipulated that the park should always be free of charge.

It was beautiful! However, it is not better than Yellowstone. It is the only national park that is free to enter. I wonder if that helps. Plus, Dollywood is nearby. 😊

It is another park that you can spend many days exploring and we only had half a day. Still, we enjoyed it very much. We didn't get to Climgman's Dome, the third highest peak east of the Mississippi, but we did enjoy Cade's Cove, an 11 mile loop through the valley.

We saw a group that we think are Mennonites. They were in a big van and used digital cameras, so most definitely not Amish. We also saw lot of folks swimming and tubing in the river. Some people were jumping in from the high rocks where the park warned not to do that because people had died. Smart.

Our big hope is to see a black bear! Black bears can be brown or tan, but in the Smoky Mountains, they are always black. There're an estimated 1,600 black bears in the park. We feel our chances are good. 🐻

  • Smoky Mountain Bear Sighting!!!

    10. juli 2017, Forenede Stater ⋅ ⛅ 84 °F

Yes, we saw a bear! A momma black bear and her three cubs. The bear was actually pretty close to us. Yikes!

All of a sudden a few cars stopped and people got out and started pointing. We knew exactly what was going on! Out of nowhere two rangers appeared.

I saw the cubs hoping through the woods, but couldn't get my camera out in time. Casey got some good shots with our digital SLR camera. Unfortunately, there was a lot of brush between us and the bear. Well, maybe it was fortunate. 😉

Momma bear did not acknowledge us. However, when she started coming closer, we split! One of the rangers looked panicked for a moment. By the time we got back to the car, the bear had moved off into the woods.

I got a video and you can see how close the bear was.

FindPenguins is great, but you can only put 10 photos in a post. So, I stuck a couple more scenery shots in here. Enjoy!

  • Nashville Sightseeing

    11. juli 2017, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

Nashville was much quieter for a big city than we thought it would be. It was nice. We were all a little tired, hit and grumpy. We didn't go into the Country Music Hall of Fame. None of us were that interested. We would have loved to take a tour of the historic RCA Studio B where the likes of Dolly Parton, Chet Atkins, The Everly Brothers, Roy Orbison and Elvis recorded. In fact, Elvis devoted over 200 songs there. Sadly, the tour is really pricy ($160 for all four of us), so we bowed out.

We didn't stay long, but we had a great time experiencing a new city. 😊

  • The Parthenon

    11. juli 2017, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 88 °F

Who knew Nashville had a full scale replica of The Parthenon in Athens, Greece? Well, we did. We read the Percy Jackson books. 😉

Nashville's Parthenon was built in 1897 as part of the Tennessee Centennial Exposition. It was meant to be temporary. The people lived it so much, they converted it to a permanent structure in the 20's and completed in 1931. Today, it is the centerpiece of Centennial Park and is an art museum.

It was quite impressive and is a replica as close as could be accomplished. The Parthenon in Greece no longer houses Athena's statue, it was lost in time, but artists replicated it as closely as could be accomplished through painstaking research.

The gaudy colors of Athena's face are likely very close to how the original looked. We know that the stark white statues and buildings from ancient greek and roman times were not really stark while. They were all sorts of colors, many outlandish. The pigment had all work away, but using modern technology and techniques we have been able to "see" what they really looked like.

Nashville's Parthenon was a great stop on our trip.
