St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna, often called “Steffl” by locals, is the most important Gothic building in Austria and a symbol of the city. Construction began in the 12th century and continued for several centuries. The cathedral is located in the heart of Vienna on Stephansplatz and features a striking south tower that reaches 136.4 meters, the tallest church tower in Austria. Visitors can climb 343 steps to a viewing platform or take an elevator in the north tower to see the city.
The cathedral is famous for its colorful tiled roof displaying the imperial double-headed eagle and the coats of arms of Vienna and Austria. It has played a vital role in Vienna’s history, including significant events involving the Habsburgs and Mozart. The Pummerin, Austria’s largest bell, hangs in the north tower and rings only on special occasions. After suffering fire damage in World War II, the cathedral was rebuilt and remains a major cultural and religious site as the seat of the Archbishop of Vienna. It attracts millions of visitors with its architectural beauty, historical significance, and cultural events such as concerts.
