The Ōpōtiki War Memorial is a column topped with an elaborate Corinthian order capital based on Nelson's column in London. The coulumn and its base were built at the intersection of Church Street and Elliot Street. This memorial replaced a temporary cenotaph that had been built by returned service man, William Jabez Newell.
