Breakfast. Long stretches of straight road to here was a little unexpected. Small roo’s, cattle and a slow walking lizard make up the alive wildlife along the way. Nice old style street lamps around the town.Meer informatie

The surprise is that there doesn’t seem to be any ‘mount’. Came through many hills and twisty roads from Georgetown then it flattened out but no ‘mountain’ The story from the publican is that the “MT” really stands for “mining town” from the old days there were plenty around here including Mt Garnet and many others. So there you go... lots of gemstones found around here .., yes including garnets. In Georgetown there is a whole collection - I saw a 200kg quartz crystal at the info centre.

The trip down from a cool, overcast Ravenshoe to Kurumba was twisty, green, windy, gusty, green, twisty, did I mention green? Passed forest, avo’s, potatoes, cane, mangoes, cows and more green fields and running streams! The trip from Kurumba to Cairns was a sharp decent and no fun with lots of traffic dribbling along at 40km/ hr. We have now reached the end of the Savannah Way which started in Broome..... Tonight at the Cairns Sunland Leisure Park with grass and with a fully equipped kitchen and outdoor eating area. A dinner visitor....Meer informatie

Decided to do different things today. Allan went to Cooktown via Port Douglas and John and I went on the Kuranda Scenic Railway. Some pictures - Horseshoe bend 180 deg bend, Stoney Creek falls and trestle bridge, view of Coral sea and Cairns city, Barron Falls, Kuranda station and the diesel electric engines. We took a walk around town, had a coffee and also had a tea in the station tea house before the return journey. The rain forest and the views out to the Coral sea were spectacular.The amazing tunnels, bridges and cuttings set against the sheer slopes showed what an engineering feat in the 1890’s this really was. The rail line was heavily used in WWII but now just has the tourist traffic. The Barron George Hydro Electric station started generating in 1935, was the first underground power station in Aus and still supplies 60MW to the Qld grid.Meer informatie

A big gumboot , sugar mills and cane fields. Coffee at a a bakery.. the height of the gum boot represents the local rain fall in 1950 - 7.9 mtrs. The current average is approx. 0.72mtrs (720mm) per year.Meer informatie

The sea views and views of aircraft from the RAAF base are some compensating factors of our most expensive campsite of the trip so far - the camp kitchen is also at the other end of the park from out tent site. On the ride into Townsville still lots of sugar cane growing along with mangos, pawpaws, bananas, pineapples, Christmas trees and more sugar cane. The scenery is stunning. It would seem that we have moved from Tropical or Far North Queensland (TNQ or FNQ) to just North Queensland as we have travelled from Cairns to Townsville.Meer informatie

The trip down from Townsville was in two sections. The first continued the cane fields theme with lagoons, bogs and creeks all with lots of water. The Burdekin river was an exception with just a few puddles.....then about 80km from Bowen we crossed a line and went back to grazing land, cattle, market gardens and fruit trees. The creeks or water courses went dry - felt like we had jumped back west for bit. Really gusty winds sprung up along the way - pushing me across more than half a lane at times. Stopped at Tony’s for a coffee. The bakery had a pot of peas and you ask for peas on any of their pies. I had a plain pie loaded up with peas..... seems to be s thing in this part of Qld. Skies getting darker and cloud cover now complete.Meer informatie

Got hammered by rain just out of Bowen. Had to stop to add waterproof liners and chat to some locals. A photo also of the rain over the cane fields. Cane and cattle together from here to Mackay. Also had an issue with the chain on the KTM so stopped near the town of ‘Leap’ to reattach the chain - found a bolt had come out of the centre stand as well ... that had to wait until we got settled for the night.Meer informatie

Wet wet windy and wet and so we decided to try for a cabin for the night. Andergrove Van Park was where we ended up to dry out and sort the KTM. A strange road thing on the eastern seaboard of Qld - there are center lines marked about 500mm apart which act like single and double lines in Vic. Big signs explaining when you can pass or not when the lines are dotted or sold ... just unsure why it’s set up so differently thank other states. More rain in the morning so it will be a very wet ride down to Rockhampton.Meer informatie

Finally arrived in Rocky and found Andrew’s place. We managed to bring the rain in here as we arrived. We decided on pizza for dinner - the first one of the trip. Great night of dry and warm while it rained outside. Rockhampton is famous as the birth place of Rod Laver and is also one of oldest towns in Queensland dating from 1858.Meer informatie

Thankfully a lot less rain today and we have removed the outer wets. Soup and coffee for morning tea at the big big giraffe cafe, food wasn’t boring. Lots of animals watching us eat... we didn’t make pigs of ourselves but Allan was concerned about the kangaroo with purple eyes.Meer informatie

The ride from Bororen was intermittently wet through mostly grazing land but also with cane and pineapples. Fortunately the weather cleared enough for us to get the tents up dry. Well when I say ‘dry’ - my tent was in a pool of water at the bottom of the small pannier... looks like water is getting in somewhere so need to wrap things until I figure out what’s happening. It was curry all round, cooked in a well appointed camp kitchen. Rain over night and it is certainly weather for........Allan also woke up to a flat tyre and had to add the can of tyre goop - this worked!Meer informatie

On the old Bruce Hwy......Who would have thought that we would find Matilda the kangaroo mascot for the 1982 (!) Commonwealth Games put out to pasture. We have now left sunny (sic) Queensland and entered NSW. Traffic was just horrendous on the M1 from at least 80kms north of Brisbane all the way through. Loads of roadworks as well made it all very interesting. Another amazing tree near our camp site. Very good bonsai specimen. The River Retreat CP overlooks Terranora Creek with Terranora Inlet down past the bridge in one of the photos which joins the Tweed River further east. We are on the flight path from GC airport..... hopefully there is some dory of curfew. Allan went off to get a new tyre at Gold Coast Motorcycles in Mermaid Beach. We are now all set for the trip south.Meer informatie

About a hundred kms of roadworks on the Pacific Hwy. Speed limits going up and down and lots of signs telling you that roadwork speed limits are enforced. Tiring, boring. Got to the Glenwood tourist park pretty late and set up tents still wet from last night.... ahhhh... off to the pub for dinner.Meer informatie
