    Arrived in Ushuaia, the most Southerly town
    Took a bus ride to the port, including a short guided tour
    Boarded MS Roald Amundsen at 7pm, a beautiful ship
    Picked up our Hurtigruten jackets

  • Drake Passage

    January 9, 2024, South Atlantic Ocean ⋅ 🌬 4 °C

    Sailing across Drake Passage, quite rough
    Feeling a bit disorientated but not sick yet
    Joined the nature watch on deck but didn't see much
    Attended Captains welcome drink
    Watched Barbie in our cabin to pass the time!
    Met Piglet and Egbit who have joined us for the trip
    Saw our first iceberg from the cabin window, very exciting

  • Drake Passage

    Watched the penguin presentation, very informative, we're likely to see Adele, Chinstrap and Gentoo types
    Watched cape petrels doing acrobatics on the sea
    Collected our Hurtigruten rubber boots for landings
    Had to vacuum all our outer gear ready for landings
    Enjoyed hot tub out on deck before dinner

  • Epsilon Island (Antarctica)

    Woke up surrounded by Icebergs, amazing!
    Saw humpback whales diving and resurfacing
    Watched King Neptune presentation to celebrate crossing the Antarctic Circle, didn't even feel the bump!
    Took our first zodiac ride to view crabeater seals and one lonely Adele penguin on the ice floes and a shag colony on the iceberg
    Ship drove into an ice sheet (intentionally that is!!)
    Saw three Minke whales diving under the ice sheet hunting for krill
    A large penguin appeared, turns out it was a juvenile Emperor. We watched him for ages, mesmerized!
    Ice landings in the evening and we were all allowed out to play
    Watched crabeater seals playing around the ship from the deck
    Experienced interesting interaction between the Emperor penguin and the seals, apparently both very curious but not doing each other any harm

    Finished decorating my water bottle
    Watched the Seal talk so I now know what I'm looking at
    Took a zodiac to our nature landing hiked on volcanic rocks to a lookout, viewed crabeater seals
    Polar Plunge (we watched but didn't participate)

  • Red Rock Ridge

    Stopped in Margarita Bay for visiting penguin colony on Red Rock Bay
    Took zodiac to the Antarctica Mainland
    Walked to view the penguin colony, we have to stay 5m from the penguins!
    Jacuzzi with stunning scenery in the bay
    Fabulous evening watching stunning scenery, the sun set at 12.30 and then started to rise again, amazing!

  • Bongrain Point

    Captain said too many ice sheets for us to pass through the Gullet so we had to divert South
    Enjoyed watercolour painting from last night's wonderful scenery
    After lunch we made a landing to view more penguin colonies, fascinating
    Was fun watching them, penguins running everywhere, sliding on the snow, diving into the sea, lots of young with parents, some feeding them, was amazing!

  • Pléneau Island

    Had an amazing kayaking trip, well worth waiting for!
    Weather was gorgeous and sea was like glass.
    We watched penguins swimming, diving and propelling themselves out of the water
    Then the whales came so we sat in the kayaks watching as numerous humpbacks appeared all around us!
    What an amazing experience!
    Out of one set of gear and into another for our nature landing on the island
    Visited Gentoo colony, many parents on nests made from pebbles, sitting on eggs and day old chicks, reshuffling every few minutes so we could see
    Walked with poles through the snow
    Lots of opportunities to watch individual penguins playing in the snow on the way back
    Fabulous setting for our hot tub before dinner
    Evening whale watching from the top deck
    Wow, whales everywhere!!
    Tony counted 50 flukes😂
    Unable to catch them on our cameras but Alan will have hundreds to offer

    Passed through narrow Lemaitre Channel
    6 am and viewed Una's Peaks ( I stayed in bed)
    Great excitement as the Captain announced sightings of Orca Whales very close to the ship

    Watched groups of penguins on ice floes at breakfast
    Continued observations from the Explorer Lounge
    Took a zodiac to our nature landing at Tay Head, lots of penguins diving in the water
    Observed the adelie colony, chicks about 4 weeks old being protected by parents, some offering stones (apparently just filling time!)Read more

  • Yankee Harbour

    Visit to the engine room, fascinating
    A very entertaining science workshop by Zoe called What's a fjord?
    Demonstrated the mixing of freshwater and Sea water which have different densities
    Saw humpbacks at lunch time
    In the afternoon we joined the science boat
    to investigate the impact of climate change on plankton in the ocean.
    Again Zoe was informative and entertaining
    We measured temperature and salinity at different depths
    Results from science boats are reported to Scripts Research
    Nature landing on the spit to view elephant and fur seals, also Gentoo penguins
    Didn't stop long cos I was so cold after sitting in the zodiac ( but the wine at dinner warmed me up!!)

  • Half Moon Island

    Our last nature landing before sailing back across Drake Passage
    Chinstrap penguin colony high up on the rocks
    Had to make way for lots of comings and goings to the sea, dirty Chinstrap parents making their way down very carefully ( messy tummies covered in red barf)
    Clean Chinstrap parents returning to their nests with clean white tummies
    Lookout over numerous glaciers
    Brendan spotted a juvenile Emperor on a slope in the distance
    Visit to the Bridge, very interesting to see how it all works!
    Drawing plankton and phyto plankton, fascinating things to draw!
    The Crew Band performed in the Explorer Lounge, really impressive, many popular numbers and lots of dancing, good fun!

  • Drake Passage

    Watched the St Andrews University presentations, algae distribution, whales and micro plastics (which explains all the work that's been going on at our landing sites)
    No more landings now...
    We made a few mistakes with dressing at first but the routine has become engrained over the 16 days...
    base layers, leggings, fleeces, waterproof trousers, thick socks, muck boots, red jacket with ID card, life jacket, neck warmer, hat, gloves ... for every trip, takes a while to get prepared

    Handing back our muck boots and patches today!

    Expedition routine from the Black Box was amazing, so well organised and supervised
    ID checked, boot dip and a goodbye before boarding the zodiac, always the same boarding routine (you need to have your wits about you!!)
    On return boots cleaned on the bristle machine, disinfectant dip, then ID check and personal welcome back...so slick!

    Towel folding activity, I can't believe we're doing this !!
    Interesting dinner with some BIG waves, had to hang on to our wine glasses

    Ship in the port due to National strike
    Activities to keep us entertained...

    Native Trees
    The Falklands War memorial
    Scurvy stories
    History of Ushuaia
    Water Birds Nature Reserve
    Demonstrations on the way back for the strike day
    Lunch with the Aussies
    We stay one more night onboard and fly to BA early tomorrow, hoping our luggage will arrive in time for our flight to Heathrow 🤞
