    Chaiya Mangalaram, George town, Malaysia

A very colourful and glimmering temple with mosaic dragons at the entrance and a large reclining Buddha inside. There was also more sitting Buddha's set along the back wall, each connected to the animals representing years - according to the poster Luke is actually an ox and I'm a tiger. Ox have great knowledge, whereas tigers have merit cleverness!

    Dhammikamara Temple, George Town, Malays

Opposite to the Thai Buddhist temple was a Burmese Buddhist temple - although not as glimmering it was still as ornate and colourful. There was many more outside areas to explore, although not sure what the symbolism was for most of the statues unfortunately!

A smaller version of the temple we visited in Kuala Lumpur this was still impressive to see, and definitely made an impression on the architecture of street!

    Khoo Kongsi Temple, George Town,Malaysia

A large ancestral temple for the Khoo Kongsi clan, its also a musuem showing their history. Good to have a wander around, and interesting to see where the clan members have ended up working - some even in Manchester, UK!

    Jewish Cemetery, George Town, Malaysia

The oldest Jewish cemetery in South east Asia, there was an odd contrast between the peaceful cemetery and busy day to day life being lived outside of the walls.

The grab driver seemed confused as we were dropped off , and the cemetery caretaker had to usher us inside as the gate was closed so I don't believe there are many visitors here.

Some of the graves dated back to the 1800's, with the most modern one we found from 1970s, and there was also a section reserved for military.

    Fire Station, Georgetown, Malaysia

A stunning example of a colonial fire station, it really stood out with the red markings against the white building - in keeping with the fire engines! This station is still in use as well, and was very well kept.

There was a street to the side decorated colourfully that added a whimsical nature to the area.

    Cheah Kongsi, Georgetown, Malaysia

This was a large Chinese temple, with a large front garden - we've not seen this before so seemed unusual. There was some street art along the side wall too, as to be expected with Georgetown!

    Armenia Street, Georgetown, Malaysia

This was such a fun street to walk down, with lots of traders and street performers added to the busy atmosphere. There was a cute little park which had been decorated for lunar new year, side streets with umbrellas hanging over the top, and more of the colonial styles buildings mixed with Chinese themes.

On the corner of Armenia Street this charming Chinese temple contrasted with the colonial buildings surrounding it, adding to the vipe of the area being a melting pot of nationalities.

    Fort Cornwallis, Georgetown, Malaysia

We wandered along the seafront to find Fort Cornwallis still emanating an opposing figure, with cannons and high walls along the outside. There is ongoing reconstruction of the moat too, which would be an interesting readdition to the landscape.

    Clock Tower, Georgetown, Malaysia

Clock tower built to commemorate Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee.

Sat next to a busy roundabout, with Fort Cornwallis close by and other colonial style buildings there is an odd juxtaposition with the starker modern buildings.

Another cute Chinese temple, this was closed when we walked past but we got a chance to appreciate how beautiful the doors are.

As with most Chinese temples the entrance was modest in size, but the actual building went back quite far.

A colonial style Roman Catholic church, the first time we walked by I was far too hot to take a photo...and the next time was right before a storm so it looks almost apocalyptic!

    Penang Botanical Gardens, Georgetown

We visited the Botanical Gardens twice as we enjoyed strolling around the park in the morning so much. Locals were also enjoying the park, mostly using the lower temperatures to exercise though!

The first morning we enjoyed watching some birds in the trees, saw some local dogs wandering around, a couple of small monitor lizards feeding, and the usual macaque monkeys that hang around areas human may feed them (despite the many signs saying not to!).

The second morning we went we were delighted to get to see dusky langur monkeys feeding on tree blossoms, although close to us they weren't bothered by our presence, or tried to mug us!

We thought we were lucky to see them high in the trees, but we were ecstatic when they settled on a tree right above the seating area near the lotus pond where we were sitting. They had an absolute feast from the tree, moving around and causing leaves, branches, and tree blossoms to fall around us as we watched in amazement.

    Pinang Peranakan Mansion, Georgetown

Another large mansion within the city, again mixing the colonial style with Chinese influences. From peering in slightly we could see it was pure opulence inside as well!

    Ipoh, Malaysia

Ipoh was a nice stop to see a different part of Malaysia. The old town was interesting to look around with heritage buildings, street art, and the modern additions.

Most of the really interesting sites were outside of actual Ipoh unfortunately, as the area is surrounded by karsks (which had us reminiscing of Ninh Binh in Northern Vietnam!) that had natural lakes or temples built inside.

We still managed to find a great Indian restaurant that fed us banana leaf and set meals for very reasonable prices!

    Enlightened Heart Temple, Ipoh, Malaysia

This is a rare Tibetan temple in Malaysia, relatively modern with one of the tallest pagodas in the world. Photos don't seem to do this justice, as it was stunning to see.

Unfortunately it was very busy while we were there on new year's, and as we didn't want to interrupt their celebrations we didn't go inside (which is a shame as photos look amazing!).

Sam Poh Tong Temple, Ipoh, Malaysia

Outside this beautiful cave temple there's a small garden and lake with fish, and you can make your way through the actual temple to an opening in the cave. Walking out you are in the middle of limestone karsks with another large temple on the left, and a turtle pond on the right. Very serene atmosphere.

As we walked back through the cave another tourist asked us 'anything worth seeing down here?', and we enthusiastically replied 'yes!'

Nam Thean Tong Temple, Ipoh, Malaysia

Situated next to Sam Poh Tong, this temple seemed a bit more commercialised and busy so we didn't go inside. We walked around the outside where there was a pond and some statues.

There was also lots of signs asking not to feed the monkeys, but no actual monkeys to be seen! Maybe a blessing in disguise.
