Adventure is out there

Our travels, to see where the world takes us Les mer
  • Prasat Kravan, Siem Reap, Cambodia

    9. januar 2024, Kambodsja ⋅ ⛅ 34 °C

A bonus temple which wasn't on our itinerary for the day so an enjoyable surprise! There was a large event being set up around the temple, a banquet which was very expensive (as we were told by our tuk tuk driver). We hadn't seen a temple set out like this previously, as there was 5 structures in a line, each with a shrine inside.Les mer

  • Southern Gate, Siem Reap, Cambodia

    9. januar 2024, Kambodsja ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

One of the main gates used around the area so we passed through a few times - so magnificent each time. The massive gate is imposing, although I found it amusing that cars, tuk tuks, scooters etc still use this gate - as its not actually that wide so sometimes you need to wait your turn to go through.

The carvings in front display 'The Churning of the Ocean of Milk', which we found in other areas too, but this was very well preserved.

  • Cambodia Landmine Museum, Siem Reap

    10. januar 2024, Kambodsja ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

A somber but interesting start to the morning. Our tour guide had lost a leg by stepping on a landmine as a child, and the blast had also killed his brother and sister. He was able to tell us his story, and gave us details about the gentlemen who set up the musuem - and who also found all the bombs which we currently on display. An eye opening experience, but our guide was very positive for the future, only wanting to be able to help orphans and injured children in the same way he was helped.Les mer

  • Kbal Spean, Siem Reap, Cambodia

    10. januar 2024, Kambodsja ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

After an exhausting trek up the side of a mountain we were greeted by a wonderful waterfall, and then traced along the river to find 1000 year old carvings in the river bed. A surreal experience as hundreds of butterflies and dragonflies danced along the river too, almost framing the carvings that were unlike anything we have seen before.Les mer

  • Fruit Bats, Siem Reap, Cambodia

    12. januar 2024, Kambodsja ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

We found a colony of fruit bats living in the trees almost by accident, and loved seeing watching them! We first found them in the daytime, and went back to see them at dusk when they are more active. Much bigger than the bats we have seen previously, although just as much squabbling goes on. Their wing span was huge, and it was great to see them fly around.Les mer

  • Wat Samrong Knong, Battambang, Cambodia

    17. januar 2024, Kambodsja ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

A large wat with ancient structures surrounding it, the site was used by the Khmer Rouge as a prison with interrogation and torture rooms, as well as a killing field.

There was a large stupa dedicated to the innocent lives lost, called the Well of Shadows, which includes scenes of the atrocies commited as well as ashes and skulls of victims. On the site there is also small musuem and a school, that is used to both teach children about the acts of the Khmer Rouge as well as further their education with English lessons.

A sombering part of the day, and an honest conversation with our tuk tuk driver, who was grateful that his parents were only put to hard labour during this time. He told stories of starvation, and witnessing horrendous acts, as well as his frustration in the current political climate. As with all Cambodians we have spoken with, he looks forward to better times for his children.

  • Ek Phnom Pagoda, Battambang, Cambodia

    17. januar 2024, Kambodsja ⋅ ☁️ 32 °C

Another ancient temple, but this one has only been partially restored. You can imagine the scale this would have been while walking around though.

A newer temple has been built in front, which is quite the contrast against the ruin. There is also a large Buddha which has been built to the side, unfinished unfortunately as the addition wasn't welcomed by all.Les mer

  • Killing Cave, Battambang, Cambodia

    17. januar 2024, Kambodsja ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

I have no photos of the killing cave, or words to explain the atrocies that happened there. Only photos of a beautiful horizon, taken from the resting place of many, many people.

It was an almost respite from the other sites as there were no signs with english explanations to read, but the suffering was still obvious as the skulls of the dead stared out from the shrine, and bones of other victims rested on the cave floor.Les mer

  • Bat Cave, Battambang, Cambodia

    17. januar 2024, Kambodsja ⋅ 🌙 29 °C

After returning down from the mountain we were able to have a drink with some locals, chat more with our tuk tuk driver... and then witness millions of bats flying out of their cave!

They streamed out in an orderly queue, the cloud getting darker as we stood there watching. They curved around the carved Buddha on the side of the hill, then flew into the night in mumurations. We watched for almost 20 minutes in amazement, and bats were still emerging from the cave while we headed back in our tuk tuk.Les mer

  • Choeung Ek Genocidal Center, Phnom Penh

    20. januar 2024, Kambodsja ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

Our first stop of what we knew would be a difficult day. The audio tour was included in the price, and although not enjoyable we appreciated the extra information given as the site was surprisingly small, and barren (as buildings had been torn down to reuse the materials).

A must see in Phnom Penh, but for all the wrong reasons.

  • Kampot, Cambodia

    22.–30. jan. 2024, Kambodsja ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

A lovely town to relax and explore, we absolutely loved our time here. It reminded us slightly of Battambang (although with far less dust!) as the buildings were a similar style and it still had the amazing light.

One of my favourite things to do was sit by the river watching the sunset over the varied landscape.

Can't forget to mention the giant durian in the centre of the main roundabout, although we still didn't get to try durian here as it wasn't in season.
