  • 🌜Bald Mountain Shelter

    March 30, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

18.9 miles of hiking today with two bigger climbs. Views were stunted by the clouds but the overcast conditions were cool and comfortable and the rain held off for the most part. I took my time and arrived at the shelter as a thick fog crept through the forest. Lots of people in the shelter (at capacity of 12) plus a few tents with rain expected overnight. I guess we will see what tomorrow brings 🤞🤞

  • Blowdowns, blowdowns

    March 31, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

As far as the eye can see… but apparently the worst is yet to come. An enormous amount of work has been done to get the trail ready in time for the 2025 season!

  • 🌜Uncle Johnny’s Hostel

    March 31, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

The storm we hoped would arrive overnight eventually did right at dawn. The downpour tapered quickly and I still made it out of the shelter relatively early. Had plans with fellow hikers Trickshot and Little Foot to hoof it out of the hills into Erwin TN-and we kept a good pace. 17 miles by 2:30pm. That includes a lunch break at No Business Knob Shelter and a pause for trail magic (someone left us cold drinks on the trail!!) The rain was constant and intensifying as the day progressed- essentially we arrived at Erwin completely soaked- luckily temps were not too bad so just wet, not freezing. We got bunks at a hostel at the edge of town near the trail and enjoyed hot showers before catching a shuttle into town for dinner.

We actually missed the shuttle back but some super nice local lady named Leetha saw us in the supermarket and offered us a ride to our hostel. People have been so fantastic to us!

This hostel was completely rebuilt since last fall when everything was destroyed by Hurricane Helene we are grateful to be here.

  • 🌜Stealth Camping on Trail

    April 1, 2025 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 11 °C

Today started uniquely with a boat ride! The bridge in Erwin was washed out by floods during Hurricane Helene but thankfully a local rafting service is running a ferry service across the river for hikers.

I spent the day again hiking with Trickshot and Little Foot and we covered a lot of ground… approximately 21 miles. There were ambitious plans to make it to the next camping area but we ran out of daylight and decided to pitch tents in an area that is heavily hurricane damaged with down trees. We are on an old logging road that used to be part of the trail (there is currently a detour set up for 2025 hikers). Tomorrow we should be able to pop back into the main route early-no harm no foul.

We saw many different types of environments today- riverbank, dry/scrub, grassy patches, dense pine forests, blow-down forests, rocky areas,… probably more I’m forgetting. I spotted a bright orange salamander and identified an odd bird call as maybe a grouse (you should pull that one up-it’s a deep, low frequency knocking sound that even causes the ground to shake a little bit).

  • 🌲💨 On the verge of blowing over

    April 2, 2025 in the United States ⋅ 🌬 10 °C

This is wildly disorienting to watch in person- the ground is heaving and swelling because this tree is on the verge of blowing over any minute!! 😬

  • Cloud walking

    April 2, 2025 in the United States ⋅ 🌬 13 °C

High elevation and huge gusts of wind… low visibility- it was like walking through a storm cloud. I’m here with fellow hikers Little Foot and Trickshot

  • 🌜Stan Murray Shelter

    April 2, 2025 in the United States ⋅ 🌬 13 °C

It was mega windy overnight, the tent held up but it was shaking so intensely 😱 so sleeping was hard, got up early and hit the trail right away.

Spent the day hiking with Trickshot and Little Foot and covered about 19 miles of trail. There was a pretty big climb around lunch time (2,222ft up to 6270ft elevation) and we met some amateur ham radio enthusiasts who were participating in a “contest” broadcasting in Morse code. They were interesting to chat with. While we ate lunch they picked up a signal from Spain.

Over the course of the day, and certainly as I got to higher elevations the weather shifted to a cloud walking experience ~ huge gusts of wind, easily 45 mph and low visibility-like fog, but honestly we are up in the clouds… who knows what’s going on in the real world.

As a group we decided to stay at the last shelter in the area since it was windy and damp (not quite raining though, just damp. )

Early dinner, early bed. Early to rise???

  • Elk River hike

    April 3, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Lots of odd debris from flooding on the river banks, but a beautiful river nonetheless

  • 🌜Primitive Camping Near AT 405.2

    April 3, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Amazing day of hiking over “the humps” both Little Hump (5445 ft elevation) and Big Hump (5559 ft) were bald grassy knolls. Although there were clouds and wind it was much more calm and visibility was fairly decent.

Around lunch time we arrived at a highway, discovered some trail magic (cold drinks) and walked up the hill to the Appalachian Station for lunch. They cater big time to the hiker community and also have a hostel on site in addition to the pub. We were planning to bounce after lunch, which we essentially did… but first a resupply in the pantry there, which was well stocked.

We also hit Mile 400 today!

My big highlight- I was captivated by Jones Fall and split off from the group to marvel, splash, and relax before cranking out 4 additional miles to meet up at a campsite on trail. Soothing sounds of a babbling stream will cradle me until the morning 😴💤
