.. and a first flight within 9 hours of 2026 commencing.... In the dark and rain on an air bridge.. then up above the clouds for a glorious sunrise.. arrived to lashing rain and Storm Francis doing it's worst.. I'm here to ascend Mt Teide.. a stratovolcano.. with new Scarpa boots . but the weather has other ideas.. so am contemplating a quiet day tomorrow.. drinking coffee.. and seeing if somehow I can get up Teide in next few days.. it's not looking hopeful currently.. so plans will need to be changed.. however 24 c tomorrow..and Mr Sun appearing🌞.. sometimes.. the weather gods are against me.. but I keep going.. first of many footprints in 2026.. .. no change in Mt Teide status.. so a coastal walk today.. and to plan how my days now proceed.. I cannot even get up into Teide National Park.. never mind the volcano itself.. and must hope in the next few days that the situation improves.. and I can at least get onto Teide some way up.. thinking summiting is highly unlikely.. walk today was very windy.. massive waves.. effect of Storm Francis still being felt.. but a sunny 24 c... life's not so bad after all😏Read more

.. this superb mural has a footprint all of its own.. as it deserves one..it's up there as one of the best I have ever seen.. not big.. but superbly detailed.. a masterpiece.. seen earlier today🐝

Volcano Teide

La Rambleta is the short trail from the top of the cable car to the crater.. and no passes are being issued except to experienced mountaineers.. so Teide is closed again today.. I now have 2 days left for things to change.. before I transfer to Santa Cruz.
It's the hope that kills you☹️

Postscript..those in the know have said no chance of anything changing in next 3 days..high winds and snow have effectively made Teide unaccessible…..all the people who’ve bought cable car tickets also cant ascend..no paths..no buses into the Teide NP..its just impossible...so I have given up..and already looking at flights to come back out here next month to have another go…I am nothing if not determined..and can now get on the beers in the sun here☀️..a silver lining I feel…am over this disappointment already☺️Read more

Atlantic coast walk

..with force 5 to 7 winds.. rough to very rough conditions.. and a 3 metre sea swell.. the roughest seas I've seen for some time.. but the sun still came out .. 🌞and it reached 24 c... that's a min of 24 c warmer than North Yorkshire.. so I remain in good spirits despite volcano woes... 🫤Read more

Teide NP

.. then .. my luck changed.. whilst the summit is still out of the question...I managed to befriend a fellow guest in my accommodation.. who had a car.. who was going to Teide NP today .and had a space .. talk about never giving up.. well.. I sort of had.. and then this gem of kindness came along.. so.. I headed off with Joseph.. from Spain.. Jonathan .. from London.. and Frank .. from Netherlands.. these are just some pics of a spectacular days hiking . Up to circa 9000 ft.. outstanding... why haven't I done this trip before..🧐.. am coming back to summit Teide..in Spring 2026..unfinished stratovolcano business☺️Read more

What is difficult to comprehend is that all this is part of a 7500m high volcano..of which half is under the sea…its the 3rd tallest stratovolcano in the world..so I still reached around 6500m up Teide..which I’d say is a great result..☺️Read more

..a last full day in Puerto de la Cruz . before I transfer to the capital.. Santa Cruz.. and it's been a day of heavy rain . and some sunny intervals.. the Scarpa boots have not been on today . knees complained that they needed a rest day..following the rigours of yesterday . stratovolcanos are inherently hard work ..a slower day . therefore .. with a morning of coffees and reading..nice..and later..a chance to seek out interesting doors and murals...Read more

The capital of Tenerife.. I transferred here for an additional 2 nights .. to give another window for Mt Tiede situation to improve.. arrived 6/1.. Epiphany.. Spanish Christmas Day.. almost deserted.. today.. everything open again.
I love just wandering around markets in towns abroad..we've lost much of this in UK.. but shopping locally is trying to make a comeback.. the Spanish in Santa Cruz had some fantastic meat.. fish and fruit/ veg to choose from hereRead more

.. having met a passenger onshore.. who thought I was a fellow passenger too . I established this cruise liner was leaving at 6 pm.. for Barbados . with the weather I have to come back home❄️❄️.. it was tempting to seek a berth onboard.. I didn't.. but did go at 6 pm to see her depart... would I like a cruise?.. still not sure🧐Read more

Danger to life weather warnings have been issued for parts of the UK later today.. heavy snowfall.. ice and winds.. this storm is coming up from SW..and in the path of my flight home later.. anticipate we will be above it.. unless we're on the descent glide path into LBA when it arrives . in which case we may go around it.. or turned back..or diverted..who knows..hoping of course we land as scheduled..bad timing to come home to all this if you ask me.😏. ..although looking forward to getting the microspikes on the Scarpa's as early as tomorrow afternoon.❄️❄️... In anticipation of not being able to get back up to Gillamoor tonight . I have already booked accommodation in York.
Mt Teide is ever present.. even when taxiing to take off.. so.. mixed feelings as I depart.. circumstances prevented me getting to the summit.. but still a great trip overall.. if you don't try . It'll never happen.. right.. and I'm happy to not have to be checking the Volcano Teide status ..daily✅Read more
