Red Rocks & Robben

Bevor in das neue Jahr gefeiert wird, sind wir an die Küste gefahren (Owhiro Bay), um einen kleinen Walk zu machen. Ziel waren die Red Rocks, eine vor 200 Jahren geformte Ansammlung von rotem Gestein. Es gibt zwei Legenden der Maori, welche sich auf die Färbung beziehen. In einem Fall sammelte Kupe - der berühmte polynesische Entdecker - hier Pauas (Muscheln), als eine seiner Hände festklemmte. Er blutete und befleckte die Felsen rot. In der anderen Geschichte ist das Rot das Blut von Kupes Töchtern. Sie fürchteten auf einer langen Reise die Sicherheit ihres Vaters und versammelten sich in Trauer über seine Abwesenheit.
Danach ging es ein Stück weiter die Küste entlang. Nicht lang hat es gedauert, bis Jenni die ersten Robben auf den Steinen entdeckt hatte. Insgesamt konnten wir 4 Robben beobachten, welche sich nicht weiter stören ließen. Der Ausflug hat sich aufjedenfall gelohnt.

Red Rocks & Seals

Before we celebrated New Years Eve, we went for a walk on the south coast (Owhiro Bay). Our destination were the Red Rocks, which were formed 200 years ago. Maori folklore tells two stories relating to the colour of the rocks. In one, Kupe - the famous Polynesian explorer - was gathering paua (shellfish) here when one clamped his hand. He bled and stained the rocks red. In the other story, the red is the blood of Kupe's daughters. Fearing for their father's safety on a long voyage, they gashed themselves in grief over his absence.
Afterwards we moved on along the coast. It wasn't long before Jenni spotted some seals between the rocks. We saw four of them, which did not let themselves disturbed by us. The walk was worth it.Read more
