• Riding the rails

    April 14 in Slovenia 🌧 15 °C

It’s another moving day already. Our hotel was located next to a museum. Although we didn’t go into the museum, there was an outside exhibit of Forest Glass Blowers. In the 18C glass masters came over from other parts of Europe to start a glazuta. This area had good supplies of flint sand and wood needed to make glass, which had become important for industries.

Before we left the area, we stopped to see the WW1 museum in Kobarid. There were exhibits of artillery, guns, clothes, maps, bullets, local history and pictures, stories of US soldiers rescued by the Kobarid Slovenians. There was even an exhibit called Suffering in War: Humans and Animals Alike. It described the work of pigeons, horses, mules and dogs in the war. It was interesting to see how much the dogs were used. They were used to carry messages and packages, find wounded men, and provide comfort to the soldiers. Unfortunately many of the animals were slaughtered after the war as they had no use for them.

Instead of a long slow drive around the mountain to our next stop we were able to take a Motorrail, a car train through the mountain. The train is equipped with flatbed rail cars that you drive onto and stay inside the vehicle. It was a bumpy 10 min ride through a tunnel. So much easier than a switch back mountain road and all for only $17.

We arrived at the hotel, got settled, and since it was raining took a drive into town for supper. This is the first bad weather we’ve had. We shared an order of strunklji, Cheese rolls, again, and I had mushroom soup and bread. Slovenian mushroom soup is made with a broth base and not creamy like home with lots of big mushrooms. I suspect that is a common crop, as it’s in a lot of dishes. It was very tasty. Ed had beef goulash and mashed potatoes.

It was an early night at our hotel as we were tired from the early morning.
