• Brunch in Dovie, Skofja Loka

    April 19 in Slovenia ☁️ 20 °C

Tori and Ben hosted a next day wedding brunch at their rental. It was nice to see everyone again and visit with family. They even had some of the wonderful desserts from the wedding. Desserts and pastries are a big thing here and they are fancy and wonderful. We didn't stay very long as we had a short drive (1.5 hr) to our final hotel and still wanted to stop and see another town.

Our final nights were in Breg ob Savi, on the outskirts of Kranj, a major city in Slovenia. Our hotel was a mix of old and new. We were in the new part and it was very nice and roomy.

Next we headed to Skofja Loka, not far away. It has one of the best preserved medieval town centers in Slovenia, dating back to 973 AD. The squares are lined with colorful, historic houses adorned with frescoes and traditional crests. In the old town you can also see the Loka Castle high on the hill, old churches, statues, and scenic rivers. One of the town’s most iconic sights is the stone Capuchin Bridge (built in the 14th century), which features a statue of St. John of Nepomuk and is one of the oldest surviving structures of its kind in Central Europe.

Since the weather wasn’t very good, we toured the old town but didn’t make the walk up to Loka Castle high on the hill. As it was getting late and it had started to rain we decided to have soup to warm up and a quick bite of pizza in the old town. The soup was served with small, crunchy, round dough balls called jušne kroglice (literally translates to "soup pearls" or "soup balls"). They look like tiny baked croutons, but they are traditionally made from a choux pastry-like dough (milk, butter, flour, and eggs) that is pressed through a sieve or piped into small drops and traditionally fried until golden brown and crisp, then dried. They were so tasty to have with the excellent soup and pizza.
