  • Tombstone Park

    7 juni 2022, Canada ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

The weather has turned a bit colder and wetter. We planned to do a hike with Renée before she gets back on the road. When we got to the trail head everything was clouded in so there was not much point climbing up hill for the view.

Renée decided to carry on while we went back to the campground. We will try again tomorrow.

  • Goldensides

    8 juni 2022, Canada ⋅ ⛅ 4 °C

This hike gets you up high enough to see the mountain Tombstone Park is famous for. The sky was moderately cooperative so we did manage to get a glimpse of the famous mountain range.

Unfortunately the trail was closed because the Dahl sheep are lambing at this time of year. (We searched the hills but couldn’t see any sheep)Meer informatie

  • Slow Going

    8 juni 2022, Canada ⋅ ⛅ 5 °C

Our goal is simply the next campground up the highway. It took all day, there was so much to see we kept stopping every 2 kms. Probably would have been better off doing this portion on a bike.

Engineer Creek is full of minerals including sulphur and iron. It makes for some amazing colours, which don’t show up very well in the photos. I’ll have to touch them up when we get back.

  • Snow and Cold

    9 juni 2022, Canada ⋅ ☁️ 0 °C

Woke up to snow, not a lot but it was a sign of how the weather was changing. Today we are staying put to let Renée get ahead of us. We explored around the campground (Engineer Creek).

Some highway maintenance guys showed up so we grilled them about the highway ahead. They hadn’t seen any bikes, but mentioned 4” of snow near Eagle Plains. It wasn’t sounding great for biking, or driving for that matter.Meer informatie

  • Tracking the Majestic Moose

    10 juni 2022, Canada ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

We had been on the trail to see our first moose. We finally spotted a large butt meandering into the bush, definitely a moose. Not 2km later we saw the one in the video.

PS: Renée had the exact same experience, first a moose butt then a few kms away a moose crossing the road.Meer informatie

  • Mud

    10 juni 2022, Canada ⋅ ☁️ 4 °C

Before we left camp we talked to some more cyclists going north. That makes 7 cyclists on the highway that we know of. Renée of course, her two riding buddies Brent & Tim, Zack (way ahead), and now Jeremy & a couple from Vancouver. An update from the highway crew puts Renée and gang at km 270, about 70km ahead of us.

Then the mud, and I mean MUD! From all the rain in the last few days the roads were slick. Like grease only slipperier. Just as Renée was in sight we hit a bad section and almost jackknifed the trailer. Renée had some snacks from her stores and back to the mud (probably not as bad on a bike). About an hour later we got a message from Renée that an older man in a truck went off the road about 10km from where we stopped. He was OK but needed help to get out of the ditch. We let them know at Eagle when we arrived.

As the locals repeatedly say “At least there’s no dust!”.

  • Eagle Plains

    10 juni 2022, Canada ⋅ ☁️ 4 °C

Eagle Plains as it used to be called, now Eagle Plain Lodge. Yukoners just call it Eagle because it changes names so often (they are thinking of officially changing it back to Eagle Plains).

Anyway still an important stop along the way. Pulled straight into the gas station (had to let them know right away about the truck in the ditch). Saw the sign for a car wash and got excited about that. Luckily gas was only $230/litre, 8 cents cheaper than Dease Lake, and more reasonable than we expected.

Paid for a much needed car wash, but alas when I got there … no hose 😕. Guess it froze so car wash is out of commission.

Also no cell service, which was a bit of a surprise. The hotel has internet though, yeah 🙂. But only 10 devices at a time so we couldn’t get connected 😕.

Shower was hot and free with a campsite, and the view is great in all directions.

  • Arctic Circle

    12 juni 2022, Canada ⋅ ☁️ 4 °C

We’ve had close to 24 hours of daylight for most of the trip. Very soon the sun won’t set at all. Perfect for a solar powered trailer.

It was windy and cold so we didn’t stick around long.

  • Rock River

    12 juni 2022, Canada ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

This campground certainly lives up to it’s name. The rocks on the sand bars are fascinating. Lots of mosquitoes though, more than we have encountered anywhere else. They are manageable give the correct application of deterrent’s.

Tomorrow is a rest day for our biking trio. The next couple of days they go through a pass and will need their strength. They also want to make sure the weather will cooperate.

Built a friend for my buddy and so did Renée. Got to admit my arms are a little sore after playing Rock Jenga all afternoon.

  • Ridge Hike

    14 juni 2022, Canada ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

Such a beautiful day we wanted to get out and walk a bit. This ridge right at the Yukon/NWT border beckoned.

It looked like an easy walk at first, but turned out to be longer and steeper than we thought. The hill, which we thought was covered in gravel, turned out to be covered in boulders.

The 360° view was amazing in all directions.

  • Peel River

    15 juni 2022, Canada ⋅ ☀️ 8 °C

All afternoon people coming from the north had been stopping to let us know that the Peel River ferry was not running (again). Undeterred our cyclists ventured on. Sure enough when we got there it was out of commission. The water was too high and still rising so the ramp was being washed away. Until the water levels start going down the ferry will not be operating.

Our cyclists had a backup plan to hire a boat to take them across. A group of three cyclists before them set the stage, and the boat showed up in just a few minutes. Long enough for Renée to re-stock her supplies in case we can’t join her for a few days, if at all.

Renée is finally on her own, the way she probably pictured the trip originally. In the end they would bike over 120kms on this gorgeous day.

We had to backtrack and camp for the night. We ended up at a gravel pit not far from the ferry landing. Almost immediately a dump truck and loader showed up to haul gravel to the landing site. So there is hope …

  • Delayed

    16 juni 2022, Canada ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

With the ferry not running because of high water, and Renée already on the other side, we were stuck waiting. We back tracked to a gravel pit about 6km away.

There we met some interesting people: Frank from Texas, who we keep running into everywhere we go. Mike the trucker who kept us posted on the ferry status. A couple from Italy that have been on the road for 5 years in their post apocalyptic camper making YouTube videos (stepsover.com). The equipment operator that was hauling gravel to the ferry landing. Richard who is kick biking (aka scooter) the Dempster Highway after having already crossed Canada.

Finally we noticed Mike and his truck were gone, so we knew the ferry was running, or going to be running soon. So we got in line in time to watch them build the ramp. There was already a decently long line of campers, cars, and semi’s. We were allowed to shortcut the line as they wanted smaller vehicles to help pack the gravel before the big boys went over it. Managed to get on the second load and we were back on the move again.

Not taking any chances we pushed on to the next ferry across the MacKenzie River (8th largest river in the world).

We are definitely getting 24 hours of sun. We’ve had 24 hours of daylight for a while now, but now the sun never sets. It stays completely above the horizon. This picture was taken just as it was starting to rise again. It dipped down til the bottom was almost touching the tops of the trees.Meer informatie

  • Renée Arrives

    18 juni 2022, Canada ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

Renée and her two companions arrived at Tuktoyaktuk at 1:00am.

    Congratulations Renée you did it!!

They left Inuvik around 10:00am and did the full 140kms in one shot (with the help of a rare tail wind).

Guess it was grad weekend in Tuktoyaktuk so there was lots of activity at “the point”. Sleep didn’t come until 4:30am.

Arrived at the Arctic Ocean around 10:30am. A journey of 5406.7kms from our driveway at home.

Spent the day in Tuktoyaktuk. Had Muktuk bites and whitefish at Grandmas Kitchen. Muktuk is Beluga whale, kinda half skin half blubber.

Everyone here is extremely friendly and accommodating, one of the most welcoming places I’ve ever been. The locals check up on the tourists regularly to make sure they are OK, and they’ll stop and talk or answer your questions.

After the Muktuk I did a little beach balancing. It was very windy so I was surprised that it lasted all day.

Renée’s bucket list included hiking to Grizzly Lake, for the “real” view of the iconic Tombstone mountains. You can get a view of them from the highway, but they are far off in the distance and the weather has to be almost perfect.

Getting into Grizzly Lake is a 12km hike (one way) with a major climb. We waited an extra day in Tombstone Park so that the weather would be better for the hike. Turned out to be almost perfect.
