    Adriatic coast

    We have now reached the Eastern coast after what should have been a 2hr drive that took most of the day due to a main road closure with no diversion signs! The scenery through the mountains was a redeeming feature. 27C on arrival, but due to be 17 tomorrow. On a first impression this side of Italy is much quieter and many campsites are not yet open. On the other hand there is a bike path that goes a long way up the coast so hope to try that tomorrow.Leggi altro

    Windy coast

    Woke to strong winds off the sea so bikes stayed on the motorhome. By chance found a nearby area with woodland walks which took us up hill to a WW2 English cemetery which was quite beautifully maintained. David's father was involved in 2 Allied troop landings, Salerno and Anzio, the latter being south of Rome, and many of those buried here were from those episodes. Some of the graves were from his outfit, the Royal Army Medical Corps and would have been known to him.
    After 8 miles of walking in the hills the rest of the day passed quietly.    Leggi altro

    Wonderful cycle path along old railway line including tunnels but...1...it ran out!

    Cycling along the Adriatic

    Beautiful morning allowed us to make the best of a cycle path constructed along the old railway line. All along this area the fishing piers, called trabocchi, extend out into the sea and many have been converted to restaurants. The weather then deteriorated with rain from afternoon and predicted all night. Cosy enough in the van, though.Leggi altro

    Still there

    Stayed put for 3 days as the site is excellent and the weather sunny, if windy. Cycled south yesterday 20 miles round trip entirely on cycle paths beside the beach or through nature reserves. Many campsites and holiday apartments but none open yet so the whole area is very quiet, which is great. Walked along the sea edge today, with the snow covered mountains to the west and the sea to the east. Plan to move further north tomorrow to visit caves and all sorts.Leggi altro

    Caves Grotte Di Frassassi

    Free sosta at the caves
    Drove inland to see these amazing caves. They extend 30km into the mountains but the tour involves 1.5km. Quite staggering in size and complexity.

    Back to the coast

    Moved back to the coast again south of Rimini but spent the morning walking up a steep path to an unusual little church built in the mouth of a cave. The drive onward to the coast included heavy rain and hail but prospects of finer weather to come.Leggi altro

    Camping Adri. Acsi €21.
    Cycled along the beachfront against a northerly wind to Rimini. Heaving with families celebrating Liberation Day, all with winter coats and umbrellas. Mile after mile of beachside eateries and bars, all with kids playgrounds and manicured sand stretching 200m to the waters edge. Rimini seemed quite a dump but we happened upon a place for lunch in the sun.Leggi altro

    San Marino

    A short drive inland to the smallest Republic in Europe but only the 3rd smallest nation with more registered cars than residents and no McDonald's. Only 13k long with the city being up a very steep hill, and mostly made up of tourist shops. Strangely it is well known for gun shops. The views are a spectacular but masked by the cloud and rain today. Three ancient towers dominate the easterly rock face and today there was tightrope walking between two of them.Leggi altro

    Parcheggio Ponte St Pietro : Free
    This is a charming town criss-crossed by canals on the edge of a large lake. We arrived on Saturday in the middle of a annual 4 day celebration of their fish-smoking industry and the place is teeming. Most of the motorhomes in Italy seem to have converged here. Woke Sunday morning to sunshine and so cycled the 30 mile route around the lake, much of it on cycle paths including a 4 mile path right across the lake. Worked up a appetite for local street food lunch and the obligatory ice-cream.Leggi altro

    The Po Delta: Bosco Mesola

    Spending our 3rd night here partly because the weather is fine and partly because the cycling is excellent. Quiet roads and cycle paths to forests, lagoons and the sea. Decided to give Venice a miss as it will be teeming and we have both been before so heading for Padua tomorrow.Leggi altro

    Area Sosta Camper Padova: €10 , electric extra.
    Spent the day in Padua as did thousands celebrating the May Day holiday. The majority of these were Indian who filled the piazza in front of the Basilica and the nearby gardens. Posters celebrating St Anthony were in Bengali - absolutely no idea what was going on. Rather a drab and modern city otherwise.Leggi altro

    Verona

    This is a good city to visit. It has a relaxed feel to it with many cobbled streets and piazzas and seems "authentic" despite being very busy with visitors. The colosseum is less stunning than Rome but is still a venue for opera and concerts. We found a tiny riverside restaurant for lunch and better than average ice cream - we are becoming experts in this now. Being the setting for Romeo and Juliet it attracts many young couples, and older ones too. The queue to see the courtyard fabled to contain "that balcony" had to be seen to be believed.Leggi altro

    Camping Le Palme ACSI € 126 (€23)
    Now at Lake Garda and staying for 7 nights at a comfortable campsite - even has a pool and ice-cream shop! It was full when we arrived so spent the first 2 nights in the car park just outside the gates but now, Sunday, on our pitch. Weather set fair for a few days so the lakeside area is bustling, at least over the weekend. Extensive cycling opportunities should keep us busy.Leggi altro

    Still at Lake Garda

    Had a good week here with mostly sunny weather. Explored much of the south of the lake on bike and on foot. Planning to move to Lake Iseo tomorrow, only and hour away but change if scene.

    Camping Lido Sassabanek ACSI € 21
    This area contrasts completely with Garda. Maybe it's because you have to drive through a 2k tunnel to reach it. Its a smaller lake surrounded by mountains and its peaceful. We knew the campsite we are at would be a winner when we checked in because someone had decided not to stay saying it was too quiet!Leggi altro

    Cycling the lake

    Spent all day cycling the 40 miles around the lake, much on road or roadside cycle paths and some on old railway routes complete with tunnels. Much of the far side is a windy, narrow lakeside road overhung by cliffs and seemed to attract all the motorcyclists in Italy trying to show off. Initially stumped by a 1km poorly lit tunnel and us with no lights! Eventually braved it by donning reflective coats, turning the electric up full and pedalling for dear life.Leggi altro

    Staying put

    After a few days exploring the local nature reserve and island mountain we were planning to move on today but bad weather put us off doing so for 24 hours. Took a ferry to the island yesterday and climbed to the top at 600 metres comprising 13k and 98 "floors" according to the Smart Watch. Descent made tricky by rain on slippery rocks but injury avoided.Leggi altro

    Lake Maggiore

    Camping Eden ACSI €23
    Spending our third night at this large lake, the top few miles of which are in Switzerland. The campsite sells itself as being on the lake but they have had so much rain recently that some of it is IN the lake! Good bike ride yesterday. Today we set off by train get to a ferry out to 3 islands characterised by exotic gardens and palaces. The trip was complicated by first arriving at the wrong station, so a mad dash to the right one, and then by a passenger in another carriage having a cardiac arrest. Appeared to have survived after 20 minutes cardiac massage on the platform.
    Have decided to start heading homewards tomorrow via Switzerland and Northern France (these last 2 sentences are not connected!)    Leggi altro

    In the Alps

    Camping Santa Monica ACSI €23
    Spent yesterday crossing the Alps with some stunning scenery. Happened upon a good campsite in a beautiful valley with cable car access to mountain walks, so decided to stay 2 nights. Took the cable car up today and walked down through fields of wild flowers, the only sounds being rushing streams and tinkling cowbells.Leggi altro

    Camping Sainte- Claire ( aire next door but full) ACSI € 19
    Our last stop before home at a charming campsite only 35k from Dieppe and the sun is shining brightly at the end of the day. The site happens to be right on the London to Paris cycle path which we are planning to take one day, maybe later this year, so we may be back. The site has a well-reviewed restaurant so we head there shortly.Leggi altro
