Arriving in Pamplona

Had the loveliest welcome to the albergue Casa Ibarrola by the effusive Cesar.

It’s a funny place, based on a Japanese capsule hotel model. A very private bunk/room that is a bit of a faff to climb into and rather hot, but it feels great to have my own space. There’s also a lovely shared space with tea and coffee and biscuits.

After showering and booking my accommodation for Estella (a private room!), I went out to meet Nick and Tom, and then we were joined by Alan (Frank), Dave, and some other Aussies and Kiwis. Yummy big salad with goats cheese, bacon, walnuts and raisins, washed down with a glass of red wine.

Left them to go and explore the city and had a lovely wander round the streets that were buzzing on a Friday night! There was an awesome atmosphere. I bought an icecream and ate it on a beach in the town square, meeting a Dutch Camino couple as I did so (Anna and Constantine). Bought some postcards, looked around the cathedral and came back to my little capsule!Okumaya devam et

Very little sleep again but it was a comfy night at least.

Walked through beautiful Pamplona again to meet Nick and Tom. Had a fruitless search for a non-sweet breakfast for Tom(!) then we headed off to Puente de Reina.Okumaya devam et

Stage 4 - along the way

Not long after leaving Pamplona, we were faced with another steep incline winding up to one of the Camino’s most iconic monuments - the Hill of Forgiveness (Alto de Perdon). The tradition is that pilgrims forgive others, and ask for forgiveness for themselves, with each step up the hill.

Again, we were so lucky with the weather - we had blue skies which showed the green rolling hills and the miles of hypnotic wind turbines at their best. It was easy to see why the turbines are there too as it was very windy. In fact, inscribed on the pilgrim sculpture are the words “where the path of the wind crosses with the stars”

After that, we had a steep downhill and then it was onwards to Puente la Reina.Okumaya devam et

Arriving in Puente la Reina

Puente la Reina is a pretty little town and, after settling in at the Albergue Puente, I joined Nick, Tom and Brittany along with Nick and Marie (borderline conspiracy theorists from the US!), Julia from our dorm room (and also the US) and an Aussie couple for drinks and dinner. Had a good night in the Albergue and got some relatively decent sleep.

Started the day with a cuppa and a couple of pieces of dry bread in the kitchen there and then met Nick and Tom at a little cafe and we set out.

This bridge- another of the amazing series of medieval bridges we’ve crossed - was the subject of a ‘would you rather be on the gorgeous old bridge looking at the new bridge or vice versa?’ conversation. The answer was very much on the new bridge, so we went back over and took this pic.Okumaya devam et

Stage 5 - along the way

A lot of pretty sights today and especially the wild flowers.

We saw a lot of circling huge birds - don’t know if they’re actually vultures but we were told that there are vultures here often.

We also came across a confusing sign with arrows pointing in opposite directions! It turned out to lead to the ruins of an old abbey, and Nick and I went to investigate.

It was very humid and the hills felt hilly. We met Brittany at lunchtime and she, Nick and I had a big and emotional conversation about parenting experiences. It was raw and I think really surprised us all (in a good way).Okumaya devam et

Oh my God it’s bliss to have a private room and it overlooks the river and everything. Own bathroom too - with a real towel!!

Headed out dinner with Nick, Tom and Brittany and we had a lovely evening (even though there were lots of men gathered to watch the bullfighting on the screen at the bar!)Okumaya devam et

Actually had some decent sleep last night and it was soooo good to wake up and be able to potter about without disturbing anyone!

Met Nick and Tom and we went for a bocadillo breakfast before hitting the road. Learned that an iced coffee in Spain is literally a coffee served with a glass of ice to pour it over!Okumaya devam et

Stage 6 - along the way

It was very warm today and we had beautiful blue skies for most of the walk. There were more rolling hills and lots of green, and the path was gentle and mercifully there was little asphalt.

Today saw us visiting another iconic Camino stop - the wine fountain at the Bodegas de Irache, where Navarra wine is dispensed through a water fountain-type tap, and pilgrims fill their shells (or their water bottles…) There is also a gorgeous blacksmith’s shop a few metres away, which was worth investigating.

We passed a castle perched on top of a perfectly triangular mountain that looked like a kid’s drawing. Also an old ‘fountain’ that had steps leading down to water it looked as though you could just sit in happily.

Pretty villages provided snacks and lunch and the hills changed from rolling ones to Rockie type ones and back again.Okumaya devam et

Los Arcos is a very small town with an incredibly impressive church! They were packing away the Easter statues so we were allowed in for a peek and wow it was amazing.

About half an hour after we’d arrived it got very cold and started raining, so that was good timing!

Had the pilgrim’s meal at our albergue Casa de la Abuela and we chatted with pilgrims there, including the lovely Brian from Chicago and Raoul from Rotterdam.Okumaya devam et
