The cold morning soon started to get warm - and then really hot! There wasn’t a lot of shade today and a lot of it was alongside the road so although it was lovely it felt hard going at times.

The last bit of the walk was super tough today and I didn’t think I’d make it at one point, as I was overheated and overexposed. We finally arrived, thanks to Nick’s encouragement (and a brief respite in a nearby cool church that I didn’t want to leave as it was so hot outside) and were greeted by a pretty town with a stork’s nest on top of the church!

Drinks and dinner with the usual crew - and Tom was finally able to play the guitar at our albergue! I was feeling wiped out though so couldn’t stay long - and he made up a funny song about me leaving, which cheered me up!Weiterlesen

We had decided to leave early today to beat the heat so this morning saw me creeping around a quiet dorm at 6am trying not to wake everyone up!

We had a breakfast in the albergue - just toast, tea and a slice of cake - and set off at 7.

The way was already busy as so many people had left early partly to avoid the heat and partly to get the chance of having a space in the albergue at the next stop, as there weren’t many spaces to go round!

I was very glad I’d reserved a place at a kooky albergue for 7 people, or I’d have been really worried!Weiterlesen

Stage 11 - along the way

It was another hot day and I wasn’t feeling too brilliant - think I’ve caught the ‘Camino cough’ that lots of pilgrims have. Not surprising when we all share dorms.

However, I felt lots better than I had yesterday and the path was prettier and more shady so today was good. Think it helps when I wear my boots too.

We walked through a pine forest with lots of pretty purple plants and came across a memorial to the Spanish civil war, as well as a man who painted odd pictures and was giving away snacks and drinks for a donation. I bought a banana as Sue had advised me it would help me sleep, as well as an isotonic lemon drink I’ve become partial to, called Aquarius.Weiterlesen

Leaving early really helped as we got here at 2:30!

The others had been joking about my albergue being run by an axe murderer as it was very small and ramshackle looking but it was buzzing with pilgrims at the bar, I have a single bed (rather than a bunk), and it’s all rather lovely in fact.

Joined Nick, Tom and Brittany for a drink outside and then we were joined later by Elise from Paris, and Bert and Raoul from Holland. We ate paella and pizza and had a good chat and a laugh.

Eventually we decided to look at the church (creepy feeling inside) and check out the tiny village before retiring to our albergues at the stupidly early time of 7pm because we were all knackered!Weiterlesen

Had a fabulous night’s sleep and woke up at the same time as the other two in my room which made getting ready a whole lot easier. Went to meet the others just before 7 but they’d had a rough night so weren’t ready to go.

I walked on to the next town alone through the woods and it was blissful. I was a bit nervous at first to walk through woodland when it was still dark but it was so peaceful and the birds were singing lustily as the sun came up. I didn’t see another soul until I arrived in Agès, the next town (there were lots of ‘ages’ related jokes going round amongst the pilgrims who had been ‘walking for ages’ and so on…)

Sat in a cafe and wrote in my journal eating breakfast and the others met me there.Weiterlesen

Stage 12 - along the way

It was a hot and sweaty walk today. The first half was good and it wound through some characterful villages.

We came across Atapuerca, where fossils of some of the first human beings in the world were found and there were stone pillars to mark it all. Would have been good to have stopped and gone to the exhibition centre there but we decided to push on as we didn’t have the time or energy!

The second half of the walk was through very industrial stuff on the outskirts of Burgos which made for hard and long walking.

Nick has a very swollen foot so we stopped regularly for him to rest and ice it whilst we had a welcome drink.Weiterlesen

Oooh it felt like forever to get here! There were 8km still to get to the centre of town when we got to the outskirts.

Walked with the lovely Elise from Paris for some of the way and we were all very weary.

We were revitalised by the sights of hundreds of footie fans pouring into the streets on their way to a Burgos v Racing match and the mood was jubilant (Burgos ended up winning)

After some confusion about how to get in (confusing instructions in Spanish about a link to unlock the door) we arrived at our gorgeous Airbnb which is right on the centre of town.

Such luxury! We have a room each and several bathrooms and it’s our home for the next two nights.

We had dinner at a restaurant about 3 steps away and Elise came to have a drink with us.Weiterlesen

Rest day in Burgos

First ‘rest day’ today and it was fab.

Started the day with a longer lie in and no having to frantically pack my rucksack for starters!

Went for the most blissful massage which left me feeling lighter than air, then had a brief wander round the town.

Visited the cathedral with Nick and Brittany this afternoon which was spectacular, and then spent some lazy hours in our apartment, all flopping out on the sofas and watching films on Netflix together.

Headed out this evening with them all for another mooch around town, a go on the carousel with Brittany(!) and a pizza. Needed to carb load as we’re back on the trail tomorrow morning!Weiterlesen

After a lovely sleep and a cornflakes breakfast at the Airbnb we checked out and made our way out of town past the cathedral which was beautiful bathed in early morning light.

The Camino wove out of town and into the countryside for 10km until our first stop. We all walked together but listening to our own music - it was like a silent disco Camino and I loved listening to the playlist E has made me.Weiterlesen
