The famous sea fog had rolled in overnight and was still lingering until mid morning. Everything was damp and the view had vaporised. We had a relaxing days ride along the coast, passing through small fishing villages, some with huge fishing fleets sitting in their ports. We stopped in at the Shibetsu museum that contains lots of information about the early Ainu cult. Salmon that swim from the sea up the rivers to spawn have been an important resource for a long time. They have on display the remains, pottery, wooden tools, found in the area of extensive pithouse villages built along the local rivers. We walked around one complex of pits and visited a reconstructed pit house. In Shibetsu we found a fabulous seafood restaurant and enjoyed a great meal that included the most awesome tasting scallops, prawns and various fish. We found another lovely campground in Odaito.Read more
