  • Ankara Ata Tower

    November 21, 2023 in Turkey ⋅ ⛅ 2 °C

I got off at Kızılay and walked to the dolmuses and asked which dolmus went to Atakule and what it costed (17 TL).

The Ata Tower is 125 meters high. There are also restaurants on half of the tower and at the top. One of those restaurants at the top rotates around its own axis (360 degrees in one hour). There is also a room where you can enjoy the view. Taking photos is allowed on one side of the tower. On the other side are government buildings and military bases, of which people are not allowed to take photos. <This is not right. I was allowed to photograph everything from the tower>.

I wanted to pay with a 200 TL note, but it was not accepted. Two of 100 TL was. That's why I paid by debit card.Read more

  • Ankara Mausoleum of Atatürk

    November 21, 2023 in Turkey ⋅ ⛅ 5 °C

From Kızılay to Anıtkabir is also 17 TL by dolmus. I had to leave my backpack at the entrance.

The iconically built mausoleum of Atatürk is surrounded by a large park called Barış Parkı (Peace Park) in honor of Atatürk's famous phrase "Peace in the country, peace in the world" ("Yurtta sulh, cihanda sulh"). The entrance to the mausoleum is a 262 m long footpath, called the Lion Path ("Aslanlı Yol"), with twelve pairs of lions carved in ancient Hittite style placed on both sides of the path. The lions symbolize the 24 Turkish Oghuz tribes. The paving stones of the sidewalk are separated by five centimeters. This is deliberately made this way to ensure that visitors walk slowly towards the mausoleum. This is seen as more respectful towards Atatürk's grave.

After visiting the Anıtkabir, I had a delicious Nescafe coffee in a cafeteria not far away (20 TL). Then I went to a supermarket for snacks and drinks. Then back to Kızılay with dolmus. I bought a 'Tam Ankarakart' at the Metro (40 TL) and had 60 TL credit added to it.

  • Ankara Castle

    November 21, 2023 in Turkey ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

Then I took the metro to Ulus. I asked where the castle was. It was said to be close. And indeed I could already see the castle in the distance, but I had no intention of walking it. A taxi ride there cost 50 TL and I did that.

One of Turkey's oldest landmarks, Ankara Castle is a historic fortress dating back to the 7th century. The castle overlooks the city from the top and is often associated with the Ottoman, Seljuk, Roman and Byzantine empires. One of Ankara's must-visit destinations, the castle embodies several architectural styles and houses twenty pillars and two entrance gates. The streets leading to the castle are lined with old Ankarian houses.

  • Ankara Dutch Embassey

    November 22, 2023 in Turkey

Appointment to renew my passport at 10:30.

This morning at 07:30 I left on foot and walked towards Kızılay. I inquired there where the Opera bus stop was and eventually found it. People were waiting at the bus stop queued around the back of the stop. It was quite busy because it was rush hour. There was also a lot of traffic along the way. So it took a while before I could get off again. I asked again how to go. It turned out to be a long way, said a friendly man. I took a taxi (100 TL), about a 14 minute drive and arrived at the embassy at 9:15 am. I ate and drank something at Simitçi, which is at the corner nearby. With about half an hour to go, I walked to the Dutch embassy. Everything was empty and deserted! When I asked, it turned out that they had already moved one year ago! Quickly I got a taxi (195 TL) to go to the new address. They are now 10 high in the Yıldırım Tower on Mevlana Boulevard. I was still on time. Everything went fine. Fingerprints were taken, passport photos and the necessary forms were handed in. Kargo form completed. Price of new passport €148.50. When I was done, I discovered that I was already in the right place when I got into the first taxi. So it wasn't necessary. A ride for nothing. I had gotten off the bus at the Gülşah Apartmanı bus stop and had to walk towards the highway (about 15 meters up again).

Today there are also elections in the Netherlands.

  • Ankara

    November 22, 2023 in Turkey ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

Plenty of time to see if I could arrange a departure to Ankara airport with departure point AŞTİ (Havaş company). Therefore, first took the bus back to Kızılay and from there took the metro and went to AŞTİ with Ankaray. Along the way, I was thinking about the return trip. At the embassy they confiscated my passport and so I will have to go back home without a passport? Didn't think about it before. I decided to go back to my hotel and find out via the internet whether traveling by plane within Türkiye without a passport was possible.Read more

  • Ankara Youth Park

    November 22, 2023 in Turkey ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

On the way to the hotel I passed a beautiful park, Gençlik Parkı. There was also a tourism office there. There I first asked which bus I should take to get back to my hotel and then whether traveling by plane without a passport was possible within Türkiye. They didn't think so and pointed me in the direction of the buses. The last part was taken by taxi (50 TL). You'll be in trouble here if you have another street that goes uphill. Slopes of up to 45 percent! Even if you travel by metro, you have to climb a lot of stairs. Exhausting.

  • From Ankara to Alanya

    November 22, 2023 in Turkey

CHANGE: Instead of taking the plane, I now return home by bus. Today at 10:00 PM with bus company Özkaymak from AŞTİ Ankara to Otogar Alanya. Price: 450 TL (14.40€). This is necessary as I had my passport confiscated by the Dutch embassy. It will take about 1 month before I receive a new passport. I didn't dare fly without a passport. Even though I stay within Türkiye, I don't think that will be accepted. Total travel time by bus no less than 8 hours!
At 6:30 PM I left the hotel on foot for the Metro with AŞTİ as the final destination. 7:30 PM goal achieved. I bought some food and drinks for the road and had dinner at a restaurant. And then waiting and waiting. Finally boarded the bus at 9:50 PM. Fortunately, no passport control along the way. In the row behind me, there was a Turkish mother with two toddlers who cried a lot during the ride, so real sleep was not possible. At one point I saw that we were near Konaklı and I asked the driver to drop me off there. I quickly grabbed my backpack, but left my cell phone on the seat! Panic when I got home. My spare phone was dead and didn't charge well, no more home phone. There is a gas station near my house and they are always open. I explained the situation to a person on duty and asked him to call the Özkaymak office in Alanya. He received no answer. Then he said, "ring your own phone" and the call was answered by one of the bus staff. It was said that the cell phone could be collected later from the Otogar office in Alanya. And so it happened.
