The adventure starts. With the car to the airport and check yourself and your luggage in near the KLM-desk at Schiphol airport. We got two boarding tickets (so we won't have to check in again once we are in China). After checking in we drank and ate a little bit with Paul and then we got on our way to gate F4. A lot of food on board the aeroplane. All the passengers on board the plane have a blanket upon them, therefor it looks more like people on a refugee boat, a very strange sight. On a screen in front of you you can follow your flight and watch a movie or listen to music.Læs mere

  • Ho Chi Minh City

    3. maj 2019, Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 35 °C

Coen and Loc were already waiting for us outside the airport in Ho Chi Minh City and together we went to the house of Coen and Loc by taxi. The house is situated in a very busy part of the district (Dang Van Ngu). First time we engaged the 'motormice' in Vietnam. What a chaos! They are coming from everywhere and overtake you from all sides and that goes also for the cars. Crossing the street or turning around with the taxi is a huge problem, but all goes surprisingly well. Then we went with our suitcases to the house of Coen and Loc.

The house is in a narrow alley and protected with iron bars before the windows and big padlocks. The motorcycle of Coen is standing in the livingroom (this is my second astonishing moment in Vietnam, I even saw 4 or 5 motorcycles in the room at other peoples places)! It is decorated in typical asian style but everything is placed so close to one another, even at the stairs they put all kind of things, that it makes an uncoordinated impression, there is not much room to move. Below you find the livingroom and the kitchen and there is a stone green stair to go upstairs. Their bedroom is situated on the first floor.

The second floor is for the guests. Anneke got a room with airco and I got one with a fan. We have our own bathroom on the same floor as our bedrooms. Here I had the third astonishing moment. Coen and Loc told us we were to clean our bottoms first with water from the spray hose, which was situated next to the toilet, before wiping it clean with toiletpaper. This is something we encountered throughout Vietnam. I knew it from Turkey, but in Turkey it is a small waterpipe in the toilet itself where the water comes from. Here in Vietnam it is a really big hosepipe next to every toilet!

One floor higher there is a corner for worshipping and from there you could go to the roof terrace. It was very hot that day. Loc had made curry soup, I didn't eat it.

    [day 1]

They like spicy food here in Vietnam. Ketchup is dark red and tastes super. A beer is very cheap and tastes delicious too (often the Vietnamese drink it together with ice). Nice milk also (brent Dutch Lady). Ofcourse I must not forget to mention the dog of Coen and Loc named Loco. He is catching all the vermin. Most of the time he lies before the entrance of the house and catches all that creeps or flies. Late in the afternoon we had a walk in the neighbourhood and I ate a very delicious hamburger with six kinds of sauces for little money. A lot of busy streets and small alleys. Anneke bought some souvenirs and Coen and Loc did some shopping for dinner tonight, I think. In the evening we watched a bit of television, and talked for while. Coen and Loc speak a peculiar language with each other, but they seem to understand each other quite well (We just couldn't help laughing about it). After all the stories of our trip so far, it was time to unpack our suitcases and go to sleep. What a day and what a lot of new impressions!Læs mere

    [day 2]

After having breakfast and saying goodbye to Coen and Loc, Anneke and I got into a taxi and went to visit the touristic spots in the city. The Notre Dame church and the old postoffice. Unfortunately we couldn't visit the Notre Dame church due to restauration works. We visited the postoffice. A very marvellous building and not only beautiful on the outside, the inside is also worth seeing. Still in use and very crowdy. We bought some souvenirs over there and posted some cards. Next to the postoffice you find McDonald's. We ordered some food and drinks there and then we went on to a shopping mall not far from the postoffice, it's called 'Diamond Plaza'. Very luxurious. It looks a lot like KDW (Kaufhauf des Westens) in Berlin. Because we didn't know the value of Vietnamese money the taxidriver who brought us to these places had a fantastic day thanks to us. We paid way too much money for the drive (40€ in stead of 4€). That won't happen to us again!

We walked in the area and tried to pull some money out of the ATM's. The streets were decorated very nice and we bought some drinks and food in a little supermarket. We were walking in the neighbourhood of the American Embassy.

Diamond Plaza is a luxurious shopping center in downtown District 1, Ho Chi Minh City. The complex includes a 22-story building and a 15-story building which serves as shopping center, 6 cinema lounges, restaurants, café and hospital. The complex was completed and open for business in 1999.

Then it was time to visit the above mentioned hotel. Again we took a taxi, this time to the highest building of Vietnam. Here we were treated as VIP's. They opened the door for us to this gigantic complex. We had to search for a while for the entrance of the hotel. So many shops and restaurants and even an ice skating place! Having found the hotel very kind personnel lead us to the reception incheck desk on the 48th floor. We got a welcome drink and had to wait a little while before we could go to our room on the 59th floor. We couldn't believe our eyes, it looks so very beautiful, with astonishing views everywhere we looked. Our room had everything you would like to have to spend a wonderful time. There was a tablet to operate all the various functionalities (tv, light, roomservice etc). We unpacked very quickly to go to the swimmingpool. It was situated on the 47th floor.

How nice to spend some time at the swimmingpool and what a marvellous view from here! Relaxing time. A nice drink and fine weather. After this we went back to our room. Anneke went to the beauty section (afterwards it appeared to have her nails done) and I watched tv and took some more pictures of the room and tried to figure out the functions on the tablet. When she came back she told me we both would get a nice massage tonight. 'You can keep your pants on' she said to me. In the evening we strolled along all the shops and visited a restaurant in the hotel complex. We tried to visit the highest floor in the building but it was very expensive so we decided not to do that.Læs mere

The massage. How we laughed. It started while entering the massage room and we kept on laughing while being massaged. At a certain point we felt so relaxed and became a little more serious and it was very nice. They gave us a face mask with all sorts of nice smelling soft creams and rubbed our chest, face, schoulders and arms. Then we were escorted back to the changing room feeling brand new again and so much younger.Læs mere

    [day 3]

On our way to enjoy breakfast. While entering the restaurant we saw all kinds of cake and sweet tasting things but they showed us our place in the restaurant which was away from that and we knew they would do their utmost again to give us the best of service. We would rather take what we like ourselves but we understood they would bring it all to us. It all took a long time and even asking for some sugar was difficult because of the language problem. We didn't speak much Vietnamese and they didn't understand enough English. I think Anneke ordered something that appeared to be a bit of octopus.Læs mere

A very beautiful park in a busy city an ocean of silence and peace. Well maintained by gardeners. A lot of green, trees, flowers and even a pond with koi carps. Spots to sit and statues and nice places for children to play. All to be found along the river. We couldn't get enough of it but we had to go back to the hotel to check out.Læs mere

  • Ho Chi Minh City AEon Shopping Mall

    5. maj 2019, Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 35 °C

Back to Coen and Loc again. For us the 'Three Bells Church' was our orientation point to find their house again because it was nearby. In the evening we went all together to a huge Japanese shopping mall called AEon. Here I found my Vietnamese 'little brother' (a doll at the children's department). Anneke, Coen and Loc spent a lot of time at the ATM's. Anneke and Loc were busy with clothing and Coen and I were looking around at the electronics department (huge smart screen televisions). After doing some shopping at the supermarket over there we went to the restaurant near the entrance and here also I saw my 'little Vietnamese brother', this time a real one. It was a little boy who sat on the table and knew how to make us all laugh each time he took a bite of his ice cream. His chin was all covered with soft ice. After this 'free entertainment' we went back to the house of Coen and Loc. Loc immediately started to clean the house again and provided us without asking with drinks and something to eat. Loco had well guarded the house, no burglars. Later that evening the neighbour from the opposite house also visited us. Drinking a beer he said 'happy New Year' everytime. We had to laugh about it because we are in the month of May, but for the Chinese a new year had just begun. You could still see the decoration in the shops and on the street and in the hotels.Læs mere
