    Buladelah

    April 17 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

We’re off north. After a bit of traffic congestion to get out of Sydney, we found our way to free camping (well, cheap camping) at Buladelah for the night.

  • Valla Beach

    April 18 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

We were serenaded to sleep by Stripped Marsh Frogs (Limnodynastes tasmenisis) and then awoken by a magpie calling.
An early morning walk into town to grab breakfast and a coffee before we continued our journey north to Yalla Beach.
The journey was still congested, but we were able to travel at the speed limit most of the way.
A quick set up and we were off to tue beach - but a media alert of dangerous surf warning was a sign of what was to come.
The waves were pumping in - around 4 metres. Fortunately there was a lagoon to have a quick dip in.
Dinner down at Nambucca Heads tonight, grabbing some fish and chips and heading to Captain Cool Lookout.

  • Running repairs

    April 19 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

The van dramas happened again last night with the door not closing. So after an early morning 5km walk it was off to Coffs Harbour to visit Jayco and Bunnings.
A few hours later the van was fixed (enough to close the door).
Then an afternoon dip at Shelley Beach at Nambucca Heads as it was protected by a small headland.
Tonight the tide is in and the waves are pounding in.

  • Dorrigon National Park

    April 20 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

After another early morning walk & run on the beach, the kids had an Easter egg hunt and then we headed up to Dorrigo National Park.

Stopping at the Old Butter Factory at Bellingen for some fantastic scones, we headed up to Dorrigo and out to Dangar Falls where we walked down to the bottom of the falls.

After that we headed to Dorrigo National Park where we completed a 3 km walk down to the Crystal Shower Falls, coming across a Blue-Spotted Forest Skink (Silvascincus murrayi) and a mating pair of superb lyrebird (Menura novaehollandiae).

Claire drove back down the mountain and to the camp where we were greeted with an amazing sunset.

  • The calm before the storm

    April 21 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

We were greeted to a stunning sunrise as we headed off for an early morning walk/run along the beach.
After pancakes for breakfast (Michal’s favourite) we headed to Scott’s Head for a swim at the beach.
After a few days of dangerous swell, it was nice to get into the water. Away from the flags we found a fantastic spot for waves, that a heavy but brief downpour didn’t dampen our enthusiasm.
After some questionable hamburgers, we headed back to camp where a storm was hitting.
We played a few games sitting around the McDermotts van before we called it a night with the hopes of a sunny day tomorrow.

  • Coffs Harbour

    April 22 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

Our last opportunity to go for a morning walk/run along the Valla Beach - the forecast had been for rain all of the day, but thankfully it didn’t eventuate.
But we planned for rain and headed to Coffs Harbour for some activities at the Big Banana.
The kids were excited for the toboggan ride, and after over half an hour wait, they were very disappointed when stuck behind someone who was too scared to travel at any speed.
With most of the other activities looking lame or booked out, we headed to the Fisherman’s Coop for lunch.
After lunch we hit the driving range where 150 balls didn’t go far - literally. With electronic tracking of the balls, Daniel, Michael and Claire took turns to hit 3 balls each. Unfortunately the inexperienced golfers took more than 3 balls each time to register a hit, resulting in Daniel having only 18 hits - but one did go 193 metres.
Returning to camp we had a quick dip at the beach before dinner at the Nambucca RSL. At the RSL Michael found a video game from the 80s - Slap Fight… one of Daniel’s favourites. Michael did the right thing and got Daniel - who was able to set a new high score. Michael got second.
Tomorrow evening drive to Shoal Bay.

  • Shoal Bay

    April 24 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

A walk along the foreshore in Shoal Bay this morning quickly changed into a drenching as heavy rain hit.
After a cooked breakfast, and the skies had cleared, we headed to Fingal Bay for a swim.
It was tough going though, with the flags set up at the rip and a very strong tow.
A quiet afternoon back at the vans, where Helen and Daniel walked into Shoal Bay again for supplies, only to be hit by heavy rain again.
Later in the evening and adults went to Zenith fire a cooked seafood platter, whilst the kids got takeaway pizza and ate in the park opposite. Nice that were can trust them to look after themselves now.

  • ANZAC Day

    April 25 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Another wet morning with heavy showers kept us in the van this morning.
Fortunately they cleared and we went into Nelson Bay and grabbed some Red Ned’s pies - it wouldn’t be a trip to Port Stephens without a Red Ned pie!
We then headed onto One Mile Beach - only a few minutes drive away but we’ve never been there before. And it was a great beach - nice consistent waves and very little rip.
We headed back to the van late in the afternoon for happy hour which turned into dinner!
Later we watched the southern cross and meteors overhead.
