    To Seattle

    17 Haziran, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☀️ 88 °F

Up at 3 am. Said bye to the kitties and Greg drove us to the airport around 3:50. Checked in with no issue (also we weren’t charged for our luggage…we only had two suitcases between the three of us, but still…yay! First flight only about half full so I got a row all to myself. Kyrie and Carol took the row ahead of me. The flight attendants had the same funny humor on Southwest as they do on Spirit. Second flight wasn’t as cool sadly. We arrived in Seattle around 9:45 am with no issues other than turbulence, but can’t check in to the hotel until 3. We were told no hotel shuttles would run until 3, but if we took an Uber or taxi we were allowed to sit by the pool. “Yeah, no thank you!” said the pale girl.

Currently 3:45pm…still waiting. Kyrie finally got politely assertive and got the receptionist to send out a shuttle…good job little miss assertive. Motel 6 is…well, Motel 6. We ordered a pizza from Papa John’s and had it delivered and devoured in less than 30 minutes. There’s a beautiful view of Mt. Rainer outside the hotel. We don’t have to check out until 11, but I think we are all gonna poop out soon…. Trying to make it till 8 pm.

  • Embarkation Day

    18 Haziran, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

Up around 6:30 am, everyone slept fairly well. Took out time getting ready since check out wasn’t until 11. We got a taxi around 10:20 am and arrived at Pier 66 just after 11. They allowed us to check in early and porters took our luggage where the taxi dropped us off. Eeeeeeasy embarkation. We had to kill time til 2:30 because the rooms were being serviced. We ate lunch at the buffet (tasted pretty good). We wandered quite a bit until we got to our room 9220. It’s a little tight but it’ll work great.

Evening meal at 5:30 pm at Savor. I’m really digging the complementary sit down restaurants after the last cruise. Carol had Shrimp Scampi. Kyrie had shrimp Alfredo. I had the shrimp cake and rotisserie chicken.

The show this evening was a Beatles Tribute, so Kyrie decided to chill in the room. It was really fun with lots of interaction. There’s a ton of younger people on this cruise. Kyrie signed up for the Entourage Teen program (13-17). She popped up on her own around 9 but said it was too crowded. So we watched a Disney Documentary about Penguins and got way too into it.

Kyrie went back to Entourage but they were in the middle of a scavenger hunt. So she and I his some ducks…

  • Sea Day 1

    19 Haziran, Kanada ⋅ 🌬 52 °F

Up around 7. Ate at Garden Cafe but it was super loud and no space to sit. Went back to room after. At 11 Kyrie tried Entourage Teen program but only stayed about half an hour but seemed to enjoy it. Gram went out a little after 12 to the casino and the special cocktail party for Latitude Members. She and Kyrie hit the Garden Cafe again but brought their lunches back to the room. Sadly, Sea sickness caught up to me.

The evening show was Element and combined dance, singing ands a magic show. It was very very good. We ate at Taste for dinner. And Kyrie hid some more ducks.

  • Ketchikan (Ward Cove) Alaska

    20 Haziran, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☀️ 55 °F

    HAPPY SUMMER SOLSTICE!

We arrived in Ketchikan around 7. Had breakfast in the observatory which we will most definitely eat at again because it was so calm and quiet. We headed out around 9:30 since everyone and their brother was trying to get from Ward Cove to downtown via shuttle buses. Another NCL ship Encore was docked beside us. There were four more ships at the real Ketchikan dock.

The weather was stunning…Sunny in the low 60s which is strange because Ketchikan is the rainiest city in the US.

We zigged and zagged through their customs station as we waited in the queue. The building had been a lumber mill. It was now full of tourist goodies…

We didn’t have a tour scheduled but found a trolley tour for a good price…basically it was less for three of us than what NCL would have charged for one. We scooted onto the trolley with 11 others. Our guide Scott was very good but made horrible puns all through the tour. We stopped at the Married Man Trail, a beautiful over look, past the totem pole center, and Creek Street (where the ladies of the night did their thing and bootleggers would smuggle in liquor during prohibition. We saw many eagles but not a lot of other species. But Kyrie did get to hold a tiny crab.

Ketchikan is named after the Ketchikan stream, not vice versa. Also Totem poles were not worshipped but used for telling a clans‘ history. The three indigenous tribes had no writing system.

We returned to the boat around 2:30 and ate at the ‘American Diner’ and sat in a faux Mustang booth. We played destination trivia for the first time and WON! Kyrie went to the room for some quiet time while Carol and I watched the family battle game…we have some very good sports on this cruise.

The evening show was ‘Expect the Unexpected with Alicia Hill.’ The singing was beautiful but Kyrie didn’t know many of the songs so I think she got a little bored. We braved the buffet only to find it next to empty and very calm. We also saw our first whale from the windows.

    Long day…everyone asleep by 11.

  • Juneau, Alaska

    21 Haziran, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

Beautiful morning in Juneau. Our tour isn’t until 1:30 so we had breakfast and tried to get online to no avail. I’m really proud of Kyrie though. She hasn’t complained about being off line at all and basically told us it’s ridiculous to pay that much. Good girl.

Our tour was at 1:30, but I made us go out at 1 to be sure we were in the right place. The check in people said to wait at number 8, far from the initial sign in. We waited patiently in the spot they said to go. But when the bus came in it parked at 1. We ended up being the last ones to board. Grr.

Anyway we got to the launch area and boarded our catamaran ‘Pharos’ and off we went, first we headed to the small lighthouse on Sentinel Island. It was built after the ship Princess Sofaia wrecked on one of the many islands. All 363 passengers perished but there was one survivor…an Irish Setter dog swam to shore and got back to the town covered in oil.

We climbed the dock up to the lighthouse using the old cart tracks the keepers used to haul supplies. The original structure burned down and was rebuilt in Art Deco in the 1920. On the way we saw a small pair of black birds and our guide saw their chicks. The birds were black Oystercatchers. Very rare and very endangered. Back on the boat as we were driving away, we saw a sea otter and everyone freaked out. It was very funny.

Next we happened upon a huge group of Sea lions. But they don’t bark, they grumble and growl. Alaska Air is the only airline to have an emergency landing after it got hit with a fish.

Then we found WHALES! One surfaced very close to the ship. In all we saw over 5 Humpback Whales and managed to get a few good pictures. Then we hustled to the other side of channels. And we got to see ORCA!

In all it was an excellent outing. At the port I called Greg to check on Nancy, his mom who had recently fallen. I convinced him to go out to California. He’ll leave tomorrow. I really miss him…but this is what he needs to do.

In the evening we watched two different shows. One was a couple aerialist Duo Hearts. The other was a singer named Mat who did a variety of song styles. Carol and I think he played Elvis on one of the other NCL cruises.

  • Skagway Sled Dogs

    22 Haziran, Kanada ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

Today is puppy day! We get to go see sled dogs! We also got serenaded at breakfast.

But it had a bumpy start…The directions to the tour were difficult to understand. We ended up walking into town but ended up going back to the dock after speaking with the tourist center. So back we went and found the tour right outside the bloody ship. We checked in then were told our Real IDs weren’t gonna cut it. With 18 minutes before the tour would take off, I ran back onto the ship, back to our room, grabbed the passports and sprinted (not graceful) back to the check in. I made it and we were not the last to board.

Temperatures here can reach -94F lows in winter. We passed through three different biomes; temperate rainforest, tundra and Arctic tundra. Area pipes send water from top of mountain through hydro electric generators to run the entire town. There’s a no man’s land between US and Canada like the DMZ. We were required to show passports so I’m glad I got them when I did.

Rangers use lasers to plot the mountain and if they detect seismic activity everyone is warned immediately of earthquakes, land and rock slides and tsunami.

Our guide told us a lot about the history of the area. One interesting fact is that a bank robber blew himself up by accident when’s spark from his gun landed on the fuse of the dynamite he’d stick in his pocket. Afterwards when the damaged area was being replaced, they found gold flecks under the floor. So the robber actually made the bank money.

We saw a black bear Cub and learned bears love dandelions cause it gets them high. Drivers used hand signals to tell oncoming vehicles there’s wildlife ahead.

After a while we arrived at the Iditarod sled dog camp and saw…Puppies!! The woman who runs the training center won the Klondike Race this past year and finished fourth in the Iditarod. Part of our group actually mushed with the sleds.

Afterwards we visited the town again. Mom left her purse at the bookstore but we found it quickly. The evening entertainment was Broadway in the 80s.

  • Cruising Glacier Bay

    23 Haziran, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☁️ 55 °F

    Today we cruised Glacier Bay.

It is a land that sustained them with a rich abundance of fish, wildlife, and plants, but more importantly a place that continues to sustain them through stories, songs, dances, and ongoing traditional practices. Although many Huna Łingít today live across Icy Strait in the modern village of Hoonah, Glacier Bay remains their Homeland. Their ancient stories and place names speak eloquently of their beloved bay.

    • A place that offers human solitude and a remote wildness that is rapidly disappearing in today's world.
    • A place of hope--for the continued wisdom, restraint, and humility to preserve a sample of wild America, the world as it was.
    • It is part of one of the largest internationally protected Biosphere Reserves in the world, and it is recognized by the United Nations as a World Heritage Site.

We saw many beautiful glaciers up and down the straights. We visited the Hoona village as well. We took a slow gondola to the top of the village and saw the cannery turned Museum.

Back at the boat we saw the Phil Collins’ tribute by the singer from the previous show. It was great.

  • Sitka, Alaska

    24 Haziran, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☁️ 52 °F

We visited Sitka today. Everyone was told to make reservations for the shuttle. We had breakfast at &local and headed out for our time at 9:45. We were a bit early but they went ahead and let us go ahead. Today’s weather was kind of yucky though. Carol got me a beautiful fox shirt that was designed and screen printed in Sitka. Since the town was very touristy we only went to a few shops before we were ready to head back.

Kyrie got a few more ducks and turtles from the arcade. We managed to eat at buffet since most were out and about. Tonight we will go see the magician perform at the evening show. Tomorrow is a sea day.

  • Sea Day 2

    25 Haziran, North Pacific Ocean ⋅ ☁️ 52 °F

Slow and easy day today for the most part. We watched fruit carving, listened to some live music and packed up the majority of our stuff. I went to talk to the internet manager to see if their ‘streaming connection’ would ruin any faster than the free minutes. He said it’d be a little faster but not by much. I thanked him and he asked for my room number 9220 and ended up comping me another 150 minutes for free (they were charging people $100 for the same amount.) very kind. Then even our lady who got Kyrie a Fanta said not to worry about paying for it.

There was a special showcase the crew talent around 2 that was awesome. There were singers, a contortionist, a saxophone player and a dance group. One of the photo gallery guys sang ‘You Lift Me Up’ and almost brought the house down he was so good. The theater was packed and again I was so impressed with the positivity and cheerfulness of the other passengers.

Carol and Kyrie went to Teppenyaki at 9pm. Complimentary meals only allow for two guests so I stayed in and finished packing. They brought back dessert, green tea cakes with peanut brittle, but said the majority of their dinner wasn’t that tasty. But Kyrie loved the show and couldn’t stop talking about it. They went with me to Local for a late dinner and again the kind waiter comped my soda. It was very kind of them but I shouldn’t have drank caffeine that late.
I ended up trying to figure out of the SeaTac Baggage Valet would actually work since we were flying Southwest Airlines. They normally will not check bags until four hours before boarding. Our flight isn’t until 10:55pm the day we disembark. I got as much info as I could before I finally got to sleep.

  • Victoria, British Columbia

    26 Haziran, Kanada ⋅ 🌧 57 °F

Ahh, Victoria…in the rain…on an NCL tour. In short we followed directions and ended up at the back of the line. Bus windows were tinted with no stops for pics. It rained. Tour guide did nothing but talk about obscure architecture and bricks. Tour started 10 minutes later and ended 15 minutes early. So our hour trip ended up being about 40 minutes. We learned nothing about Victoria. Back on the ship to pack and get ready.

Got to see an impromptu tap show and Kyrie played Last Man Standing. Mom and I had a very good dinner at the Q restaurant, great barbecue and live country western music. Kyrie snagged another rubber turtle for her day by day display.

Tags came from port valet but I still had to stay up late to check in via Southwest to get decent boarding positions. Fell asleep around 11:30 pm.

Kyrie made friends with a seagull. I swear the same gull was there in the morning when we arrived at the port in Seattle…

  • Leavenworth, Big Foot, Home

    27 Haziran, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

We arrived in Seattle overnight and left our big suitcases to the port valet…hope the bags will get home with us safely. It seems like Kyrie’s seagull friend sailed with us last night and was still there this morning. We ate a calm breakfast at the Garden Cafe before disembarking. Customs was facial recognition so we didn’t even have to show our passports. The whole process took less than 10 minutes. Outside we found a place to wait for our tour from Viator.

The tour started out rough. The pickup was almost an hour late. The guide was impossible to understand. He called ands told us we were in the wrong pickup spot even though it was sent to us by him the night before. We were squished into a passenger van with seven other people before the last stop to pick up two more! There was so little space not everyone was able to buckle their seatbelts. Carol was kind enough to switch places with Kyrie so she wasn’t stuck in the very last row with me. The guide had a microphone but basically whispered the whole time as music was playing, but even if he had spoken up no one could understand him. The people next to us in the van didn’t seem nice at first, but they ended up being really cool.

On the way to Leavenworth, we made a few stops. Things started looking up at the first, a little roadside homage to the area Sasquatch, the filming area for the film Harry and the Hendersons. I wanted to buy a souvenir but we only stopped for 15 minutes. The grumpy couple smashed into the back seat with us were kind enough to take a group picture. The husband joked around with us and put bunny ears on his wife as she took pics.

Next we stopped at Deception (or as we’d been calling it Desperation) Falls. It was a lovely short hike. There was a bridge that had been there for over a hundred years that got smashed by a fallen 700 year old tree. Instead of trying to move it, they just cut a walkway through the trunk in a ‘there I fixed it’ style.

After a few more hours on a winding mountain road at terrifying speeds we finally got to Leavenworth. The sun came out, it was warm and beautiful finally and we were given three hours to wander the adorable Bavarian style town. We ate at Stein first and listened to live polka music. We meandered through the streets and shops. Kyrie found a store with amigurumi from Zimbabwe and a bead store where she made her own collage magnet. There was even a comic shop but all their things were way too expensive. But it was a beautiful place and the weather was so pleasant we spent the last half hour just listening to the music and people watching. Before we got back in the van, Carol and the wife of the no longer grumpy couple discussed being dropped off at the airport with our guide. They were quoted $70 for all of us together.

The return trip, the guide didn’t speak at all other than at a quick bathroom stop. The small store was very interesting and the owner was fun. Three hours later we’d dropped off the other six passengers downtown before going to the airport. But we everyone got out the guide demanded $70 from us and $70 from the other couple. Carol paid because he was so aggressive and was shouting at us in the airport drop off. We saw the other couple in the security line and at least they were upset with the guide and not us. I hope they got home to Boston safely.

We were booked on Southwest all the way home again. The SeaTac airport was chaotic and cramped but we found a secluded gate a floor below ands waited there. The flights were bumpy but we were able to sit together this time because I stayed up to check us in the night before. The red eye we were all able to rest some but Carol’s ear wouldn’t pop and it was painful for her. We got back to Myrtle Beach around 11am the next day. Our bags arrived with us and Lynn was kind enough to pick us up.

Despite the bumps at the end, it was an awesome trip. One I’m sure Kyrie will remember forever. Thank you.
