    On our way

    7. april 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

Up at 3:30 am but actually slept some, so yay. Greg drove us to the Myrtle Beach Airport (Key opted to stay home) and e we checked in and all the normal stuff with no issues.

Both flights were uneventful save for the fact we had to wait an hour and a half on the tarmac wait for a special airplane part to take to Haneda (for a different plane, not ours.) the total flight time from Atlanta to Haneda was 13 hours. So even though we were late taking off we still somehow beat our original arrival time. Customs was customs.

We took a taxi to Hotel Mystays Ochanomizu and got some conbini food after check in, ate and headed out again to change money and try to find distilled water for mom…ok fine and shop a little too. We hit Matsumoto Kiyoshi pharmacy, Lashing Bang, backstreets Mulan and the supermarket. No go for the water but found other things. Mom days mom says she’ll be fine for the two night with the CPAP.

We stayed awake till almost 8:30pm.

  • Tokyo Speed Run

    9. april 2024, Japan ⋅ 🌧 66 °F

Up at 7ish this morning. Got some items repacked and had to get an umbrella since it’s raining. Breakfast at Denny’s to get ready for a big day…

First stop was Nakano Broadway. Then to Kameido Hobby Off. Back to Akihabara for lunch at Jonathan’s to see the cat robot. Returned to Hotel strong 4:30. I headed back out into the fray to look around some more. It was tremendously busy though so I got back right before 7:30.

Took a nice bath and repacked. Tomorrow e will attempt to hit Daiso (dollar store) before heading to the cruise port.

  • To the ship

    10. april 2024, Japan ⋅ ☀️ 52 °F

Today we will go to the boat! But first we woke up at about 5am. Luckily (?) the Don Quijote in Akiba is open 24/7 so we went there. Afterwards we had a quick breakfast, packed and left our bags at the front desk when we checked out around 9:30. We went out again to Yodobashi Camera to go to the 100 yen store. The front desk was kind enough to call us a taxi that arrived in less than 5 minutes. We rode to the Tokyo International Cruise Terminal in Odaiba.

There was quite a bit of confusion but we had everything ready, bag tags, documents, passports et al. We got to the waiting gate and suddenly a lady near us hollered, “You’re the girl from Surfside!” It was the couple from a cruise to Canada in 2022. Bonnie had fell on the way to the bus and hit her face very hard on concrete. The bus wasn’t going anywhere so I hopped off and found her some ice. No big deal. I figured anyone would have done the same but I was the youngest so off I went. Anytime we saw them after that on the trip they called me their hero. So now I guess I’m still their hero. Hahaha.

Mom is Sapphire Status now so we got to skip the second queue. Got right on the boat after that and found a quiet place to wait for our room to be ready. Granted the internet area might not have been the best choice, hahaha. The entitlement has already begun. Mom and I figure we will just kill with kindness.

  • Sendai

    11. april 2024, Japan ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

Up at 5:30am, breakfast at 6. Naps at 7 waiting for the all clear to leave the ship. Surprisingly we did NOT dock in Ishinomaki but Sendai itself.

Madness insured with the line because people can’t follow instructions, cue long lines. On shuttle to Sendai around 11. They dropped us off in front of Sendai Station which was reminiscent of Shinjuku Station with raised platforms and shops.

Mom and I ventured out heading for the Tourist Info desk about 15 minutes away. I gave 500 yen to a chanting priest and he prayed for our safe travels. Saw some ladies from our shop looking kinda lost and we suggested the furthest from the station the more local things they find. Stopped at 7/11 for drinks and I did one of the kuji pulls like Key told me to and won third prize, a big cushion of Cherry Blossom Miku.

We got to the info desk and spoke with the lady there about where to go to make local crafts. She sent us to the next building to a small craft counter where you could buy crafts but not make them. The lady there hooked us up with another store in the shopping street parallel to the main road called Kokeshi no Shimanuki. Mom and I painted our own little kokeshi dolls. Very fun but I didn’t realize what a perfectionist mom is.

Afterwards we went back to the station and the bus area to catch the shuttle back to the ship at 3:00. Chilled for a bit, ate dinner and caught the Stevie Wonder tribute show. The sea is kicking up though.

  • Hakodate

    12. april 2024, Japan ⋅ ☁️ 50 °F

Woke up at 5:30. Realized the Internet Hockey Puck decided to eat the charging cable. Finally got the piece out with a pair of nail clippers.

Mom up around 7:30 and breakfast at the Garden Buffet. Mom had someone cut in front of her three times. But mom didn’t go after her so that was a plus. We decided to wait in the main atrium for the all clear to go ashore. I helped some people plan their day and made sure they had a picture of a map to get back.

The line to disembark was nuts as usual; mom and I got stopped at the stairs because they needed to clear out the first wave of people. Again a number of people tried to cut line when there was a literal velvet rope blocking the staircase. I ended up body blocking most of cutters. The experience isn’t helping mom’s opinion of a certain group.

We ended up getting a taxi super fast somehow and went to the Goryokaku Tower to see the star shaped fort. No cherry blossoms yet sadly but it was still impressive. We also found that Hakodate had the cutest bird ever called Shimaenaga (aka the long-tailed tit.) pfft…

Got in another taxi to go to the Hakodate Botanical Gardens to see the ‘hot tubbing monkeys.’ The place wasn’t like advertised though and the monkeys looked pretty rough.

Got another taxi to go to the Hakodate Meijikan for a bit of souvenir hunting. Lovely set of shops in the original 1911 post office. I forgot one yen of my change and the shopkeeper ran after me to make sure I got it back. Only in Japan… There was also a Teddy Bear Museum on the second floor that housed bears that had been customized by famous people including the Dali Lama!

We were up to walking back to the ship but Google maps decided to stage a coup…So get another taxi back. We had interesting drivers all day from the First Lady taxi driver I’ve met in Japan to the grimy looking one who demanded i count my change and wasn’t as grumpy as first thought to the least taxi that opened the car door at the terminal only to drive on further with mom half out the door.

Late 2pm-ish lunch at O’Sheean’s. The waiters there are a hoot and keep trying to feed me and mom more food. One got me to try the soup of the day, Mexican Gumbo. My mouth is still on fire. Met a nice lady who used to be a professional ballerina and had a good talk with her about her travels. Back to the room for a rest around 4pm. Not sure what we are planning for this evening…will update tomorrow.

  • Aomori/Hirosaki Castle

    13. april 2024, Japan ⋅ ☀️ 61 °F

So…. Let’s take a moment to grumble. Since I got on the ship and even before, I’ve been trying to figure out how to get us to the Sakura Matsuri Cherry Blossom Festival in Hirosaki. The city is at least an hour away by bus or train. We arrive in Aomori at 7, no idea how long it would take us to actually get off the ship and to the main station to catch said bus/train. No matter how I ran the numbers I couldn’t guarantee that we would get back to the ship by all aboard time at 4:30pm. So we bite the bullet and go to the excursion desk. Lo and behold there an excursion exactly where I wanted to go. But not an online listing or even in the NCL app, but printed on a sheet of paper set up next to the adverts for Mandala Spa.

Great, problem solved, right? Nope-sold out. We were put on the waiting list with 15 people ahead of us. Now, I think I handled the disappointment well (mostly) and mom rallied to speak with a different person whilst I sulked. No dice.

I proceeded to sulk at dinner. I sulked through my soft serve ice cream. I managed to take a pretty picture of Hakodate lit up at night. Then I sulked back down to our room convinced I’d blown any hope of getting to Hirosaki…

We had tickets waiting for us at our door. To Hirosaki…I sulked for nothing…

Now back to our regularly scheduled story…

Up around 6:30 and had breakfast then headed to the Starlight Theater to meet up with the group. We were in the first bus and our guide was Junko-San. We rode about an hour and a half to Hirosaki.

First stop was Tsugaru Neputa Village. There we heard shamisen, taiko and shakuhachi instruments and admired their fan shaped floats. The workshop was fun as many artisans were there working. The spinning top toy maker and I kinda gambled what number the top would stop on and I won. I even found Sakura themed Ichigo Daifuku.

We walked to Hirosaki Castle next. The cherry blossoms weren’t completely out, most were just buds. Still very pretty and our group was pretty cool. We didn’t get a lot of history though. It was built in the Warring States period and was the seat of the Tsugaru clan who were overthrown at the beginning of the Meiji period.

It was tricky to keep everyone together so one of the participants shouted for everyone to line up, we did, and it worked. Hahaha and there were no kids in our group. But half of us grabbed some Festival food…I got a blue chocolate banana. We got back at 2. We were supposed to get a meal with the excursion but that didn’t happen. Still we were able to see many things and talk to a lot of interesting people.

Back on the boat we tried the Movie Kiss trivia with Yanar. We did ok but it was all kinda silly. E we made paper flowers with the splash kiddo team and tried trivia again. We bombed spectacularly. Saw the show “We Will Rock You” lots of good music and exceptional dancing.

Both of us are tired so we will turn in early tonight.

  • Kushiro - OR Why I’m a Bad Tourist

    14. april 2024, Japan ⋅ ⛅ 48 °F

We didn’t have to rush today because I was a bad tourist…NCL has made it impossible for anyone who isn’t on a tour or paying $20 a head for the shuttle bus. We docked in a completely different port than was expected…in the middle of nowhere. The closest bus/train stop is almost 3 miles away. Even there there is nothing but warehouses empty space and shipping companies. The least expensive tour was over $200 per person. Oh but there was a shuttle bus, only $20 per person to a fisherman’s wharf not near anything either.

The port listed wasn’t where we were docked. I’d attempted to plan the day but because we were in a different place nothing I’d planned the day before was possible. I spoke with a lady at guest services…she tried to insist we WERE in the downtown port. I showed her the Google map that pinpointed our position. She caved and said she didn’t know why they changed port, but was probably so they could sell more shuttle bus tickets. Fed up we decided to pivot plans. We went to HobbyOff and Daiso in Tottori-dori.

Off we go, and the photographer who’s been joking with us, Italo, might have sensed we were miffed but took pics anyway. Bet those will be interesting shots. In the taxi line, we watched people wander away, vanishing into the cold mist. They had no idea how far from anything we were.

We got to the store just before they opened and it was massive. There was so much there I finally just had to stop and pay for the stuff I’d found. Aaand we might have purchased a small suitcase too. The 100 yen store next door was nice as well. When we were done it dawned on us we had no way back…I hopped back into HobbyOff and was able to ask for them to call a taxi. They were so kind and did just that. The taxi arrived and the driver was awesome, I should have asked him to stop at a conbini…one more onigiri for the road. He spoke wonderful English and gave the same excuse I use about my Japanese. Ha! The funniest thing though that as soon as our driver let us out he completely ignored the other cruisers in line for taxi, turned around, waved and left!

There was a small tent at the small excuse of a port selling local things they were very nice and I ended up choosing one of the items the lady made herself. She was quite proud…granted it was a bit odd as it was advertising orange milk.

I wish we’d had an option to do something more cultural but since the ship was so far away there was no way we could do it on our own. Back on board we were herded into the face to face immigration check. No problem there, no line either. We will see how many people ignore the mandatory procedure.

Mom and I found a slightly better disembarkation excursion since our flight out of Anchorage isn’t until 9pm. We are about to ask about the details…aaaaaand we got the lady who is hard to understand and didn’t understand us the first time we talked with her. So the train trip listed doesn’t exist…they use a generic sheet and leave nonexistent tours on the page.

Mom went to get a printout of her account and the lady at the front desk said, “Go book an excursion and come back and see me.” She took care of canceling our previous transfer.

Saw the show tonight. It was a saxophonist. He was funny and turned the no photo/video of performances on its head. He encouraged filming.

Not very hungry…kinda sad we are leaving Japan. We will have five sea days after this, and two Tuesdays because of the international date line. Tonight we have to set our clocks ahead two hours.

  • Sea Day 1

    14. april 2024, Sea of Okhotsk ⋅ ☁️ 37 °F

Up at 8am because we had to set our clocks ahead two hours. It’s incredibly foggy, we can’t hardly see the ocean even on deck. Mom and I did a lot of the activities on the ship. We bombed Morning trivia but did surprisingly well on visual sports personalities.

Later we played ‘Heads Up’ which was basically reverse charades. I volunteered under duress and at the urging of our new Australian friend and her mom. I did pretty well guessing and everyone else did a great job of acting the prompts out.

We haven’t been very hungry (which isn’t unusual while cruising) and I hadn’t gotten seasick. But the evening trivia was in Spinnaker which is at the tip top of the front of the ship. I got about halfway through…then got nauseous. Aaaand that was it for me today. Went to bed and I’m hoping it’ll be better tomorrow.

We are in the middle of the line of Kurile Islands.

    15. april 2024, North Pacific Ocean ⋅ 🌬 36 °F

We are nearing the end of the Kurile Islands. It is cold, around 37 degrees. Still not feeling great but got to text Greg and Kyrie. Mom has been trying to access her mail but the network is so slow everything is timing out.

I hibernated most of the morning and afternoon. I did attempt evening trivia but we stunk hard. The show was aerialists and I wanted to see it and did. But there were so many people and the guy behind us talked the whole time. Ate something small at the cafe and went to bed.

    Thrilling, I know.

  • Sea Day 3

    16. april 2024, Bering Sea ⋅ 🌬 34 °F

We get two Tuesdays as we are crossing the international date line soon. The captain had everyone set their time an hour forward and a day back for simplicity sake. So…second Tuesday.

Slept in later than normal because of the time change. We can see the ocean today!!

Bombed yet another morning trivia in Bliss Lounge. Stayed put for the tee shirt decoration activity. It was madness. But I was polite and got what I needed very quickly. Everyone else complained the whole time and they did end up running out of shirts. I did my best but after all the chaos we only had 20 minutes to work. When we left we saw people in the restaurant still using the materials even after the staff asked for them back. I’m hoping it is just language barrier thing and not that an entire subsection of guest are that rude.

Later that evening we ate at the Teppenyaki restaurant and the food tasted like food! Except the rice which was a bit of a bummer. Our chef on the other hand was hilarious and sang the whole time he cooked. I managed to completely embarrass myself when an edamame bean shot out of the shell and got all the way across to the grilling table. I got it back using chopsticks but one of the ladies saw and tried not crack up…

Went to the show…It was showtunes🤷‍♀️.

    Ps-we found the cookies!

  • Sea Day 4

    17. april 2024, Bering Sea ⋅ 🌬 36 °F

Uhhh. The sky and sea are beautiful. We talked to nice people. We stunk at trivia. But we got to see dolphins for a moment.

Tonight we will eat at ‘Cagney’ Steakhouse. They have crab cakes…’nuff said.

Around 6:30 pm the captain came on the intercom in the staterooms (This is never a good thing) and announced that the emigration people couldn’t get to Dutch Harbor due to weather. We are not allowed to go to any US port unless the representatives are here to do face to face interviews for customs. So we don’t get to go to Dutch Harbor/Unalaska…

It’ll be interesting to see how the other passengers respond to the change. With this we will have had almost a full week of sea days.

Mom and I ate at Cagney’s steakhouse. It was super fancy. Mom was convinced the drink server was ticked off she only had a soda, but he was just messing with her. Ate a really big dinner. It was only two courses but then the waitress guilted us into getting the “OMG caramel cheesecake” which we are two bites and had to bring it back to the room.

  • Sea Day 5

    18. april 2024, Gulf of Alaska ⋅ 🌬 39 °F

Mom and I slept in late due to the constant clock changing. The weather is pretty rough.

Scratch that. It feels like the boat is gonna tip over. The Jewel is one of the smaller ships in NCL. The gale warning that kept us from docking at Dutch Harbor caught up with us. The rocking woke us up and was so violent we could only sit up for a minute or two before seasickness smacked us.

The majority of the day was spent flat on our backs to keep from barfing. Mom ventured out for about five minutes. I managed to get up to the 13th floor for pictures. The elevator kept clanking back and forth.

The video of the ship’s bow looked like something out of Deadliest Catch. And it snowed!

Finally just after midnight things settled down enough for us to move around again.

  • Sea Day 83…

    19. april 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 37 °F

The time changes are wrecking us. It was 11:30 before we woke up. Managed to eat late lunch. There wasn’t a lot of room…but a couple waved us over to share their table. There are so many interesting people on this cruise. After the couple we sat with left, we did the same thing and waved another couple over and spoke with them for a while.

Again we did slightly better in trivia with Michael Jackson songs. After that we watched the piano player from the ship’s band, Hikaru. She really gets into playing…like almost head banging hopping into it. She did a lot of classical and theatrical songs and at the end she played part of my favorite Hisaishi Joe songs called “Summer.” I’ve never heard it played live before. She talked with people afterwards. Mom forced me to speak Japanese. The lady looked thrilled that someone else spoke Japanese.

We wanted to see her again later in the day but the ship started to rock…so I repacked some things. I’m not as good as Greg when it comes to suitcase Tetris but I’m pretty happy with it.

In bed earlier tonight in hopes we get to go to Kodiak tomorrow.

  • Kodiak Island Alaska

    20. april 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 39 °F

We arrived in port around 7am and had an alarm set for 8:30 just in case. Today we clear customs…maybe. They have been calling floor by floor, we were last before the staff. Shouldn’t have been a problem right? Surely everyone Would follow directions right? Everyone would have all the documents requested, in hand and completely filled out? Surely, SURELY?!?!

Then I remembered we are back in the US. And we are tendering. Starting at 8…after clearing customs…the first group left at 8:30.

Currently it is 11:44am, over three hours since the whole thing started. We are stuck in line. The boat leaves at 6pm. We have to be onboard by 5:00pm but the last tender is at 5:30?!? I don’t know where the previous good sense flew off to.

And I’m putting this in here because I’m out of excuses for a certain group of people for mom. I cannot believe how rude, loud, disrespecting this group has been. They ALWAYS ( not occasionally) ALWAYS CUT LINE!! In the halls, in the restaurants, seats in the theater and they don’t care.

Anyway we get through customs about 12:30am. On to the next queue! The staff handled this one well, rows of chairs each line the number of people who could fill a tender boat. Around 1:30pm we got the go-ahead to board. By this point it’d started raining.

Throughout the process everyone kept mostly calm and still had a good attitude. The town of Kodiak was quite small. There was a mudslide behind their McDonalds. We walked through a small shopping center that felt like Oak Ridge Mall for some reason. We met some of the Ulukaq ladies, who told us about some of their history. Their museum was currently being remodeled. One young lady was selling stickers.

Next we went to the wildlife museum. But seems like Norwegian scheduled an expensive tour to a place less than two blocks from the harbor. It was getting to be a little too crowded for me. We headed back to the huge line to wait for a return tender. The people on this cruise are really great, funny and chill.

Back on the ship we ate some of the tea time snacks. Then we headed back to our room 8598.
We captured some food and brought it back to our cabin.

  • Seward, Alaska

    21. april 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 37 °F

Holy crap the mountains here are HUGE! I’m not sure how well pictures will show the sheer size of them…and locals say they consider them little mountains.

We used the free shuttle to get around the town. The driver has a basket of life saver candies in the front and the Australians freaked out! Evidently they don’t get life savers in their country? Mom ended up sharing the Werthers Candy she had. I think this trip has trained everyone well. Everyone is nice and quiet on this particular public transit.

It’s not quite season yet so many things were closed. The shops we did visit were very fun. We didn’t visit the sea life center since we’re will be doing something similar tomorrow on the way to Anchorage. It was a little too early for orca so we didn’t do a boat tour.

After the rain started we returned to the ship to finish packing. We did one last trivia. A guy who was always there sorta teamed up with us, I think he was French. Some of hoss answers were right and some weren’t. We got half right… But it was fun.

For the last performance of our trip we saw Le Cirque Bijou circus style act. It was very theatrical and well done. Not quite Cirque du Soliel but still cool. There were acrobatics, silk work, etc. No pics were allowed. There was a lady on the steps that kept flashing a high power blinking flashlight…It was super annoying…But then we realized she was keeping people from taking photos. After that we were all for it. After the acrobatics they played the farewell song and has staff come out.

We’d heard that there was corn soup at O’sheehan. But our waiter misunderstood and brought us cheesecake brownie instead. Then he brought some sort of orange soup. It was a bit too spicy for me but mom liked it I think.

We got our suitcases put out before 9…although our cabin attendant caught us wheeling them out. No worries…we hope. To bed by 9:30 pm so we can get up at seven tomorrow.

  • Heading Home Eventually

    22. april 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 32 °F

Up at 7am. Got a tiny bit of breakfast and then waited in the theater for our transfer tour to be called. Cue low key madness…our group was called, we checked out of the ship and headed for the Seward Terminal to grab our luggage. All there, all good! We stood in line about 20 minutes. We were the last ones on the first bus. I was concerned there wouldn’t be seats. We ended up sitting in the very front…good seats but earned us some glares.

Our drive from Seward to Anchorage took about 3 hours. We saw gorgeous views of the mountains (and supposedly glaciers covered in snow, hard to tell…) and a bore tide. We stopped for an hour at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. There were moose, bison, musk ox, brown and black bears, elk, foxes, a porcupine, an eagle and coyote. Most were there for rehabilitation or conservation breeding. Beautiful area, all outside in large sprawling pens.

Finally we were on our way, but to our surprise, the bus went to the airport. Our excursion was supposed to end at the Anchorage Hospitality Center. After that airportees got out, we continued to the Center. It was a room in a convention center. It was well organized by young volunteers and served as a place to ‘put together a game plan’ and have an area as a base. It’s a beautiful convention space but there was nothing around it except a park that the tour guide cautioned us not to go to due to the homelessness issue.

Instead we decided to head back to the airport on the 4pm shuttle. I needed to check about bags anyway. The lady at the counter checked us in early which was great, but we did have to pay for bags🙄. Mom’s suitcase was exactly 50 pounds! No worries, after a nice talk with the lady, we went too the security checkpoint. More good luck, the lady at TSA pre-check has us go through her (much faster) lane. Most of the restaurants were closed so we had to eat at McDonald’s. Mom finally got her Diet Coke!

Our first flight is at 9 pm with 1 hour 40 minute lasting in St. Paul Minnesota. Then on back to Myrtle where we are scheduled to arrive Tuesday morning around 10:45 am.

In the end we made it back home 20 minutes early!!
