    NYC on the NCL Breakaway

    October 23, 2022 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 57 °F

Up at 8 and off to the airport around 9:30. Greg and Kyrie saw us off at the airport. A quick 2 hour trip to New York, we got in a bus with two people also from Myrtle Beach (Bonnie and Mickey) who were on our Transatlantic cruise with us. Bonnie took a tumble and I went back inside the airport to get her ice for her face. Our bus drive didn’t speak much English and we had an eventful drive to the pier with Google maps in Cantonese. Onto the Breakaway with no problems. Our room is on deck 11 right by the elevators! Had dinner at O’sheehan’s with a kind waiter named Sinar. Back to room 11776 to unpack and settle in. We departed at 5:30 heading for Newport Rhode Island! They delivered mom her Platinum Status chocolate covered strawberries. We passed the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island on the way out.Read more

    Newport Rhode Island

    October 24, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 59 °F

Fun crazy day. We had to tender to the wharf today so the lines were massive. Luckily on the way back an open air boat took us back instead of the ship’s encapsulated tenders. The weather wasn’t bad, but a bit damp and cloudy. Did a bit of shopping and wandering then back to the Breakaway. Saw an opera singer for the nights show…. Beautiful Italian arias then she started speaking and had a thick Texan accent and then she hiked up her elegant dress and was wearing red bedazzled cowboy boots. Again lots of fun and the people on this cruise are super happy and kind.

We didn’t get to see it but the house from Dark Shadows Collinwood Mansion is near by too!

    Portland Maine

    October 25, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 57 °F

Today we are in Portland Maine. Last night and most of the day there for was extremely thick. People were complaining about it but I think it added a nice ambiance. We lucked into a bus tour just outside the port. We got to hear a bit of history and see famous places around the area. The childhood home of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is also in Portland. After the bus ride we hopped off in Old Port. We got a snack at ‘The Holy Donut.’ On the way back to the ship we got to see many local craftsperson’s works. I got a sock puppet as a souvenir.Read more

  • Day 4

    Bar Harbor Maine

    October 26, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 59 °F

Baaa Haaa Baaaa today. This is our second time visiting this sweet town. Has the easiest tendering process ever. We had reservations for the third group but decided to have breakfast first since the area didn’t really open up till 9. We got in line were the last two aboard and the first two off. Everyone is so happy and chatty that even rain didn’t dampen any spirits. We got to wander for a while and then went to “A Little Mad’ shop. We met the husband owner last time And this time we met the wife owner. She was kind enough to ask about my artwork. Headed back to the boat with an even easier tender. Attended an arts and crafts session and did Diamond paintings. Had shrimp poboys for dinner and watched the cruise staff teach a dance class. We will lose an hour tonight so I’m turning in early. Mom is off to fight the mobs at the jewelry shop to get free stuff.Read more

  • Day 5

    St John’s New Brunswick Canada

    October 27, 2022 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 64 °F

Great day! Up early to catch our tour to St. Martin and the Bay of Fundy. We took a tour with a separate group from NCL. Our guide Keith and driver Greg were hilarious and for away with telling a lot of dirty jokes. The group we were with were all in good spirits despite the heavy fog. The currents of the Bay of Fundy caused a high tide that’s over 30 feet high and runs the river backwards! There were many sea caves and the whole shore was covered in colorful rocks. After we got back to the ship we went and listened to some live music and a Neil Diamond Tribute. We sat with some really great people from Nevada and London England.Read more

  • Day 6

Halifax Nova Scotia - Peggy’s Cove

    October 28, 2022 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 52 °F

Today we had an afternoon excursion to Peggy’s Cove. In the morning we did some of the activities, made journals and met a nice lady named Cookie, ate a good breakfast and danced ChaCha Slide (under duress of Daniel the assistant cruise director).

Around two we left for our excursion. It was about an hour away by bus from Halifax. Peggy’s Cove was a very picturesque fishing village. E we learned about lobster anatomy from our guide Ellen. Mom and I went to a small art gallery and bought a print from the artist there Mr. Depew. When he found out we were from South Carolina he said “My father retired to a little town in SC. But you probably haven’t heard of Pawleys Island.” Obviously we have since mom lives there and dad has played golf at Pawleys Plantation the day before. So that was interesting hahaha.

After that we went to the Titanic section of Halifax graveyard. Because the town had a number of ice breaking ships for their Harbor the town was called to help recover bodies after the Titanic sank. They recovered 328 total and numbered the victims as they pulled them from the sea. They put belonging from each in numbered bags with written descriptions in hopes the bodies could be identified. White Star line, the owners of Titanic refused to pay to send the bodies home and so most were buried in Halifax with small headstones.

After we got back to the ship we used one of mom’s platinum perks to eat at La Cucina Italian restaurant. We split a margarita pizza. The show that night was a Broadway play called Six. It was a mix of pop idols and history of the six wives of Henry VIII. It was very fun and tongue in cheek but May have been a bit too contemporary for the majority of the passengers. I liked it though. Tomorrow will be a sea day and our least full day in the ship.

    Sea (Last) Day

    October 29, 2022, North Atlantic Ocean ⋅ ⛅ 57 °F

Busy last day on the NCL Breakaway. We went to the $10 sale at 9. Saw our friends from the bus Bonnie and Mickey who thanked me again for getting her ice after she’d fallen. Then mom braved the hysterical mob at Effy Jewelry for our free charms. We went to the bracelet making class, saw Cookie again and met her sister Alice who used to live in Hixon TN where I used to go to Writing group. Strangely small world. Tried ten minute mysteries. Then we went on the hunt for the souvenir Penny press which half the crew thought didn’t exist. It did. We finished up packing then wandered some more. We did trivia and did well 17/20 points. Sadly the repeat performance of Six was canceled due to illness. But the crew out on a show in the atrium instead. A guy took our picture with a new Polaroid camera and a random lady was giving out cake for her husband’s birthday. The show with the staff was hilarious…they ‘reenacted’ famous movies…sort of. Mom laughed so hard her voice gave out. Went to bed early after finishing up packing. Early morning tomorrow…Read more

    Heading Home…

    October 30, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 43 °F

Up super early to disembark, 6ish. Got some light breakfast and said goodbye to our steward Dennis. Disembarkation was chaos…I almost got us in the wrong bus to the wrong airport. Found the right one eventually. We actually drove past the Daiso store in NYC (Japanese dollar store)…grumbled grumble. I tried to figure out a way to get there but since we had transfer tickets I couldn’t swing it. Passed 5th Ave and Broadway before getting to LaGuardia.Read more
