  • Flamengo v Fortaleza

    July 11, 2024 in Brazil ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

We made it to our seats just in time for kick off and it became apparent quite quickly that this could well be the loudest stadium I've ever stepped foot in! 57.5k mad Brazilians making noise non-stop and particularly getting up for it after an important block or the win of a corner. What an atmosphere!

Unfortunately, despite having been the better side, Flamengo ended up losing 2-1, having scored a penalty and having another goal chalked out for offside.

We'd been looking forward to visiting this stadium for a while and it certainly didn't disappoint. A spectacular visual spectacle (even with all the view obstructing flags) and one of the best atmospheres in the world!

After a lie in and breakfast at our hostel we headed out to explore the local area immediately around us. First up we headed up the hill behind our hostel to enjoy the view. A little cloudier than in the postcards but still nice!Read more

  • Escedaria Selaron

    July 12, 2024 in Brazil ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

This is a very famous staircase in Rio. A bit of a hidden gem. Only joking, I think the entire city had decided to visit on this day. But we can see why it's such an attraction with hundreds of tiled steps and surrounding artwork.Read more

  • Cathedral, Aquaduct and Artwork

    July 12, 2024 in Brazil ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Next up on our wander headed to the cathedral via the aqueduct and some street art. It was at this point it truly started to dawn on us that Rio really does have a lot of poverty and poor people, probably more so than the rest of South America.Read more

  • Theatre and Library

    July 12, 2024 in Brazil ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

What turned out to be our final stop on the tour was to the theatre and library. Definitely the most impressive buildings we've seen so far both inside and out!

This ended up being our last stop as when we headed towards the waterfront the heavens opened. So we decided it was best to retreat to the hostel via the supermarket for safety.Read more

  • Pedro do Sal

    July 13, 2024 in Brazil ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

This evening we took part in happy hour at the hostel with 25/30 others before heading out to the famous night our area of Pedro do Sal. The streets were packed with locals and tourists alike!

  • A Wet Day in Rio

    July 13, 2024 in Brazil ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Today was an absolute washout for the full day. We braved a Subway and tried a walk in the afternoon but with no look. So we had no choice but to retreat to the hostel for some admin and to catch up with our new hostel friends. We did however end up going back out which turned into a very very late one (the sun had risen) so the day had a better ending!Read more

  • Ipanema Beach

    July 14, 2024 in Brazil ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

After a lie in we headed with a few hostel friends to soak up the sun at Ipanema Beach. At last some sun in Brazil! Like the famous Copacabana, the beach is on Rio's south coast with views of the mountains at either end. It was a proper taste of Rio at its best!Read more

  • Finals Day

    July 14, 2024 in Brazil ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

After the beach we headed to a packed out Copacabana beachfront bar. Half of the occupants were noisy Spaniards and the other half disappointed English.

After making dinner we went to a bar local to our hostel for the Copa America final. After a kick off delay of over an hour and dull 90 minutes we called it a day and decided to settle for a well earnt 'early' night.Read more

  • Estádio Presidente Manoel Schwartz

    July 15, 2024 in Brazil ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Thinking that the tide had turned on the weather front we decided today would be the day we get up and out ar a reasonable time to go up to see the big Jesus. However, as we dropped off our laundry we noticed it was a little cloudy once again.

Nevertheless we headed for the funicular to the top of the hill. However, one of the guys working there recommended we come back another time since we wouldn't be able to see anything from the top.

We therefore decided to pick up some pastries and head to Fluminense's old ground. We were confused at first as the ground is so old and small (but cool), but it turns out they now play there games at the gigantic Maracana.

  • Cloudy Copacabana

    July 15, 2024 in Brazil ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Next up we headed to a very cloudy Copacabana beach, not quite the full experience but it definitely has potential on a nice day. We'll be back!

The beach being quiet meant we got lots of attention from the vendors selling everything under the sun, although sadly we didn't want any of it.Read more

  • Rio Centro

    July 15, 2024 in Brazil ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Our final stop of the day was to the Centro area. There are some huge murals, a nice waterfront area and some cool buildings. We then headed through a huge chaotic market which I have no pictures of, but I'll forever carry with me the £2 Fluminense cap I purchased.Read more

  • Christ the Redeemer

    July 16, 2024 in Brazil ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Last night we headed for our final night out in Rio, to the absolutely heaving streets of Pedro do Sal where you could barely move for the number of people. It was good fun and certainly an experience and resulted.in a lie in this morning.

Once we were up we collected our laundry, had some lunch and then headed to take the train up to see Christ the Redeemer!

We bought our tickets and then had to wait for a good while but eventually we were on the 15 minute train to the top.

We can confirm that this Jesus is very very big indeed, and people were flocking to see him as the viewing decks were so busy. But super impressive to at last see our 3rd wonder of the world!

  • Pool Night

    July 16, 2024 in Brazil ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

After having some dinner we decided to enjoy a couple of games of pool. We've not enjoyed a proper table for a while now so we were back to our Championship title fight. On this occasion I managed to win both sets, bringing Dan's overall lead down to 17-14.Read more

  • Lagoa Rodrigo

    July 17, 2024 in Brazil ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

This morning we were out relatively early to make the most of our last full day of the trip together! First of all we took an Uber to Lagoa Rodrigo which we'd drove past a couple of times previously but wanted to stop at today. On a clear day big Jesus can be seen towering over here but he was hidden behind the clouds for now.Read more

  • Ipanema Beach & Pedra do Arpoador

    July 17, 2024 in Brazil ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

We then took a stroll down to Ipanema Beach. After stopping for a drink we walked all the way up to and onto the point separating Ipanema and Copacabana.

  • Copacabana Beach

    July 17, 2024 in Brazil ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

At last we made it to Copacabana Beach in the sun! First of all we treated ourselves to a delicious fish and chips and I opted for a margarita, what dreams are made of!

We had a go in the water and managed to hire a ball off a local man for a few hours. One bounce proved to be a lot more difficult than the Brazilians make it look, they're absolute naturals.Read more

  • Sugarloaf Mountain at Sunset

    July 17, 2024 in Brazil ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

  • Latin America - The End

    July 18, 2024 in Brazil ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

So this morning marks the day that we go our separate ways as I head to the US and Dan heads back home.

We've spent much of the past few days reminiscing about our favourite and funniest memories, the people we've met and the things we've learnt.

There'll be hundreds of stories to tell our families, friends and grandkids about and I'm glad we got to share the rollercoaster of the past 5 months together!

    Until next time partner 🫡

P.s. We played 2 final sets of pool on our last day of which I won both. The final score of our tournament being 19-18 to Dan. A remarkable and well fought contest!
