    Sumatra

    January 31, 2023 in Indonesia ⋅ 🌧 25 °C

Two weeks in Sumatra meant two weeks in the middle of the jungle. We arrived in Bukit Lawang, which is a beautiful town next to the river. We met up with Hélène here and celebrated her birthday.

From this town we went into the jungle for a two day hike. A guide showed us all the beauty of the jungle. We saw three female orang-utans and two baby’s. Lots of makakis, some Thomas monkeys and some white and black handed gibbons. We saw and learned about the rubber and the palm oil plantations. And in the middle of the jungle we got an amazing Indonesian lunch and dinner. We slept next to river and the next day we rafted back to Bukit Lawang.

The second week in Sumatra we went to Simolap. Agus and Virginia live here in the middle of the jungle. They set up a reforestation project to protect the nature of Sumatra. The project includes growing and selling fruits plants, educating locals and protecting the area from hunters and palm oil plantations. We stayed at their base camp with natural pool for half a week and later we went into the jungle for 3 days.
