Zvláštní země tohle Fidži. Vysílá signály exotiky, většině obyvatel jsou však kokosy s brčkem cizí. Bohaté resorty generují profit, ale zdejší města jsou prostá. Zemi vládne korupce, lidé pracují za pakatel.
Alespoň jim stále patří půda. Ne státu, přímo vesnicím. I resorty si pozemky jen pronajímají. To je úžasné. A lidé tady jakbysmet. Usměvaví, přátelští, vřelí. Když stopujete, zastaví už první auto. A řidič vám ještě koupí oběd. Byť vydělává pětkrát méně než vy.

Fiji is a strange country. It broadcasts signals of exotic paradise, yet for most of its people, coconuts with straws are a foreign concept. Wealthy resorts generate profit, but the local towns are modest. Corruption runs the country, and people work for next to nothing.
At least the land still belongs to them—not to the state, but directly to the villages. Even the resorts only lease their land. That’s something truly remarkable.
And the people here are just as remarkable—smiling, friendly, warm. When you hitchhike, the very first car will stop. And the driver might even buy you lunch—despite earning five times less than you.Read more
