Zůstává s námi i jistý pocit magie, kterou nelze jednoduše popsat.
Kouknete-li na mapu původních obyvatel Nového Zélandu, zjistíte zajímavou věc. Než přišli Evropané, Severní ostrov zabíraly desítky a desítky maorských kmenů. Avšak jižní soused, ten obývaly kmeny dva. Ano, oproti desítkám, pouze dva.
A právě ta osamělost, to vědomí určité čistoty, původnosti a jedinečnosti, kterou najdete jen tady, Jižní ostrov definuje.
Zde skutečně člověk doputoval až na samý konec světa.
Díky, pane Jižák.
A snad jednou zase na viděnou.
Picton
A few people live and work here, sure—but in truth, there’s only one reason anyone comes to Picton.
The harbour.
This is where you either get dropped off, or shipped out between the islands.
Four hours rocking on the waves, and after eight months we leave the South Island behind. A quiet sadness hits us. The stories about its beauty don’t lie. It’s hard for me now to imagine there’s anywhere else on Earth quite like it.
We carry with us not just memories of all the incredible places we’ve seen, but also a certain sense of magic—something impossible to fully put into words. If you look at a map of New Zealand’s original inhabitants, you’ll notice something curious. Before the Europeans arrived, the North Island was home to dozens upon dozens of Māori tribes. But its southern neighbour? Just two.
Yes—while the north held dozens, the south had only two. And it’s exactly that solitude, that sense of purity, originality, and uniqueness—something you can find only here—that defines the entire South Island.
Here, you truly feel like you’ve reached the very end of the world.
Thank you, South Island.
And hopefully… until we meet again.Read more
