ATOMSTACK A5 20W Simplifies Laser Engrav

    June 1, 2022 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 20 °C

Lser cutters and engravers keep getting cheaper, which is why I decided to give it a shot. A few days later, I received the Atomstack A5. This is a 20 W laser engraver, not a cutter, although it can cut plywood up to four or five millimeters or so. Also, officially, it's not suitable for metal, as it seems to be able to engrave aluminum alloys as well.
    https://www.atom-stack.com/collections/laser-en… ,
A5 is a kit of parts that you have to assemble yourself. It's not very difficult, and all the tools it needs are included in the kit. These six steps will take about 30 minutes in total to complete, and you'll have a good, sturdy assembly. It's all solid aluminum with no plastic parts.

Make sure the seat belt is properly tightened. Not too tight, not too loose, you want a smooth glide. The same goes for the guide wheel in step 5. If it's too tight, you might feel a click when moving the X-axis; if it's too loose, things might start to wiggle. The laser head also has guide wheels, which may also need adjustment.
    https://www.atom-stack.com/products/cheap-atoms… ,
The software LaserGRBL that controls the Atomstack A5 20W is free. There's also LightBurn, which isn't free, but has a time-limited, fully-featured free trial. Once you get the hang of your engraving machine, you might want to give it a try.

    A5 laser engravers

The installation manual included with the kit does not explain how to use the engraver, nor does the Atomstack website. The LaserGRBL tool, by the way, is an open source tool developed by arkypita, not related to Atomstack, it helps itself, but also doesn't provide real guidance. Instead of searching YouTube for tutorials, I decided to try and solve the problem myself.

After connecting the A5 to my Windows 10 computer, I noticed that it requires a CH340 USB-to-serial converter driver. However, you don't have to search for it online, as it's conveniently included in LaserGRBL's Tools menu.

There is also an option to upload firmware, which is possible because the Atomstack control hardware is actually a custom Arduino running the popular open source g-code interpreter GRBL. That's great news for manufacturers and hackers, as there's nothing proprietary inside the A5.

As a first attempt, I repeated the plywood cutting benchmark shown in the video on the LaserGRBL website. I loaded the example graph in LaserGRBL and hit the play button. After a few minutes, I cut out a circle (along with some plastic sample material) from a small piece of plywood included in the A5 kit.

Engraving an image on a piece of wood is a bit difficult. Engraving is easy to get started, but getting something right takes practice and experimentation. However, after a few bad and burnt sculpts, I managed to get a clean result.

The trick is to consult the materials database built into LaserGRBL. It has a section on the Atomstack A5 20W that recommends setting the laser power to 28% for the wood. Using this value with constant power instead of dynamic power produces beautiful results. Also, it is important to focus the laser by moving the head up and down.

I highly recommend doing all this in a well-ventilated room, or better yet, outside (as I do). Laser engraving works by burning the material, so there are various toxic levels of fumes that you don't want to breathe in. Also, please wear goggles!

The Atomstack A5 Laser Engraver is a complete kit that includes tools, green goggles, and even some sample materials for practice. Assembling this kit is easy and, if done correctly, results in a sturdy, sturdy tool with smooth sliding X and Y axes and a stable head.

Adjusting the height of the head might be a little more comfortable, but probably not at this price point, and the fan is a bit noisy.

The A5 relies on Arduino and third-party open source software to control it, so by adopting the A5, you're not stuck in half-baked buggy programs that will never be updated. The software is easy to use and you can start sculpting right away.

    Atomstack p7 m30 30w review

    June 13, 2022 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 12 °C

I’ve always been interested in lasers, particularly the laser engraving machines and when I stumbled upon this item I couldn’t wait. This is a newer model from Atomstack that has some feature improvements over its previous offerings. It features a 30 watt Atomstack P7 M30 laser and rest assured it’s extremely powerful. The assembly is relatively simple, make sure to read and reread the instructions. You’ll want to make sure that you follow it exactly. I was very pleased to find that all the tools you need to assemble this are included which is always a plus. They even included some scrap material to practice with prior to working on your main projects. Overall the assembly took around 30 minutes, and that’s because I was double and triple checking the routing of wires and belts.

    https://www.atom-stack.com/products/cheap-atoms… ,

Now is the point where the learning curve changes a tad, you’ll need a computer and software to run this device. For windows based products the manufacturer includes a link for free software. There’s also an option if your a Mac computer user. I spent a number of days researching and watching videos, before I performed my very first engraving. Once I was up and running - the controls & software became more comfortable to use. This is one of those items that may take some trial & error, along with time to understand the software. I’m very surprised at how quickly this item finished the project I loaded, however, the amount of detail you select will make a difference in project engraving time. Bear in mind this is engraving with a laser, it can get disperse fumes and ventilation is a must. Probably best to do this in the garage or an area with a ventilation system. Overall this is a very cool piece of technology and I’m impressed at the capability of this engraving system.
    https://www.atom-stack.com/collections/laser-en… ,
This laser engraver is not a simple toy but takes some time and experimenting to figure out the power you need, number of passes, etc to get the effect that you are looking for. But once you get it figured out it does a beautiful job.
    https://www.atom-stack.com/products/cheap-atoms… ,
I burned a logo into wood, cut some thin wood into shapes, burned a design into a leather coaster and a logo onto a granite puck. It all worked beautifully once I got the power, height, and number of passes right.

It was very easy to assemble although the instructions and illustrations were not always as clear as they could be. The software downloaded and installed easy enough but I could not get it to work without an error. I tried with a different computer and a different graphics file and it worked great. I had gotten both graphics files off the internet but when I went back and tried again on the first computer with the new graphics file, it worked fine. So, if you download a file and it does not seem to work correctly then it might be the file.
    https://www.atom-stack.com/products/atomstack-p… ,
It is also very sensitive to things like a voltage drop. It was working fine and burning a logo when I plugged another device into the same plug and it stopped. I tried this a couple times and it happened each time. If I let it run by itself and did not add any additional load onto the circuit then it finished just fine.
    https://www.atom-stack.com/products/portable-p7… ,
So, a few quirks but take your time and get to understand the software and how it controls the laser and it consistently produces really nice results.

We could see that the Atomstack S20 Pro will come with air boost that is said to be better than the first generation, giving away to customers for free. Air assist is very important for laser cutting machines. It can effectively reduce the temperature of the surface of the material, so that the laser will not burn the surface. It can also blow away the impurity particles generated during the cutting process, so that dust will not adhere to the surface of the material. Laser lens.

    atomstack s20 pro laser engraver

It is worth mentioning that the S20 Pro will include its own developed APP, which users can control through their mobile phones. However, I personally think it is better to use professional software like Lightburn or LaserGRBL for complex jobs.

The world's first 20W optical power laser engraving machine. The laser output power has increased sharply. Using the latest generation of four-way 6W laser coupling technology, it can cut 12-15mm thick tungsten plate and 8mm thick black acrylic plate at one time, and even cut 0.05mm thick stainless steel plate.

The product comes standard with the F30 Pro Upgraded Pneumatic Power Kit: the cutting capacity is greatly improved, and the cutting accuracy and quality are optimized to a considerable extent.

Atomstack self-developed mobile APP has now landed in major Android application markets and Apple For APPstore (the APP can also be downloaded by scanning the QR code of the manual). Mini size and versatile.
    https://www.atom-stack.com/collections/laser-en… ,
The panoramic filter glass protective cover has a good protective effect on the eyes, filtering 97% of ultraviolet rays, you and the people around you do not need to wear goggles, you can also watch the laser engraving.

There is no need to adjust the focus before engraving; the focal spot area of the new laser is only 1/3 of the spot area of other ordinary lasers, combining precise engraving and high-energy cutting at the same time. The laser power of fixed-focus lasers is more stable than that of variable-focus lasers.

This machine is compatible with a variety of mature engraving software, such as LaserGRBL, LightBurn, supports Win XP/Win 7/Win 8/XP/Win 10, also supports Mac system (LightBurn), and the engraving file format supports CNC, BMP , JPG, PNG, DXF, etc.

A Few Notes Before Laser Engraving Metal

    July 8, 2022 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

Laser technology has come a long way since the first lasers were introduced. Today, it is considered to be one of the best marking solutions for engraved metal because it provides high contrast, high quality identifiers for all types of production lines.
    https://www.atom-stack.com/products/atomstack-p… ,

Manufacturers looking to engrave identifiers such as logos, serial numbers or Data Matrix codes on metal parts turn to fiber laser marking.

As a laser system manufacturer, ATOMSTACK knows how to engrave metal efficiently.
The following are our top considerations when laser marking metal.
    Choosing the Right Laser Type
Fiber lasers (top) and CO2 lasers (bottom) Different types of lasers emit specific wavelengths of light depending on their gain medium. For fiber lasers, the gain medium is fiber; for CO2 lasers, it is CO2 gas. The wavelength is important because it affects how energy is absorbed by the metal.
    https://www.atom-stack.com/products/air-assist-… ,
In general, metals respond well to fiber lasers because most of them absorb their wavelengths efficiently. Therefore, it is a good idea to choose a fiber laser when engraving these metals. CO2 lasers are rarely a good choice because their wavelengths are not well absorbed.

Gather information about the metal you are marking
Every metal has different requirements and reacts differently to the laser beam, so it is critical to know the metal you intend to mark.

    https://www.atom-stack.com/pages/laser-engraver… ,
Below is a list of properties of common metal materials and alloys:

Aluminum: Aluminum effectively absorbs fiber lasers and can be marked at high speed.
Steel: As a hard material, steel does not mark as fast as softer metals. White markers can be created faster than black markers. If the white color contrasts sharply with the bare metal color, it should be used to speed up laser processing.
Stainless Steel: The chromium oxide layer on the metal surface must generally remain intact to prevent rusting. In these cases, the annealing process is recommended, especially in the medical and food and beverage industries.
Anodized Aluminum: Permanent marks can be created on the anodized layer or before the anodizing process. For example, to read the identifier through the anodized layer, deeper marks are required.
Copper: Copper absorbs fiber lasers less efficiently than other metals, which means high-speed marking is not possible.
Lead: Lead is easy to mark at high speed because it is one of the metals that absorbs fiber lasers most efficiently.
Optimize laser power for your cycle time
The laser power of a pulsed laser represents the average energy it releases over time, with high energy peaks represented by pulses. High-power lasers can deliver more pulses in the same amount of time, which allows them to engrave metal faster.

    https://www.atom-stack.com/collections/50w-lase… ,

atomstack air assist system for laser engraving machine

Below you can find examples of marking speeds for specific applications:
    Laser Marking Performance on Aluminum
Stainless steel marking time on battery
Deep engraving speed on aluminum and steel
While high-power lasers are faster, they are also more expensive. You should choose a laser power that meets your cycle time while minimizing cost. Strategies can be used to minimize laser power and reduce costs. Here are some of them:

Laser engravers can include features such as a turntable to reduce cycle time.
Unimportant information can be removed to reduce the size of the identifier.
Laser configuration (parameters and optics) can be optimized for faster marking.

Choosing the Right Laser Marking Process
Some laser processes remove material from the surface, while others discolor the surface through a chemical reaction. Therefore, certain metals require specific laser marking processes.

The following are the effects of different processes on metal surfaces:
Laser Etching: As the fastest marking process, laser etching is the recommended method that prioritizes high-speed marking. This process creates a raised mark on the metal surface.
Laser Engraving: Laser engraving is slower but stronger, ensuring you get a permanent mark even if your workpiece is surface treated or subject to high wear. When laser engraver for metal, the laser beam penetrates deep into the material, just like laser cutting.
Laser Annealing: This process is used to protect bare metal or its protective coating. Unlike other options, it does not remove material from metal surfaces. Instead, it discolors the metal through a chemical reaction (passivation) that occurs under the surface.

Deep Carving: Deep carving is slower than other processes because it removes more material. It is often used to create deeper, more aesthetically pleasing marks such as logos, stamped plates and die inserts.
    Consider post-processing
Laser marking will take more time if the metal surface you are engraving has been post-processed during manufacturing. This is because post-processed metal parts often require deeper engraving to remain readable.

To keep up with your cycle times, the laser power can be increased, or a turntable can be installed to engrave parts while loading other parts.

Here is an example of a patented shot-peening-resistant laser engraving:

Minimize the amount of encoded information
QR codes and QR codes If you want to mark traceability, QR codes and QR codes are great options because barcode readers can read them more reliably than serial numbers. They can also encode more information in a smaller area.

These codes consist of black and white modules or cells arranged in a square or rectangular pattern. For example, a barcode can be 18 modules wide and 18 modules high (18x18).

Code with more information requires more modules, which results in larger code or smaller cells. This causes two problems:

Larger codes require more marking time or more laser power.
Cells that are too small are more difficult for barcode readers to read and may affect the reliability of traceability.
If your traceability requirements are flexible, it is best to minimize the amount of information you encode. This will help you meet your cycle time or reduce the power required by the laser, thereby reducing its cost.

For example, if you upgrade from a 100W laser to a 50W laser, you can save thousands of dollars. Going from 20 characters to 8 characters can go a long way.

    atomstack m50 laser module

Manage dust generated during metal engraving
When laser engraving metal, metal dust released in the air can affect the performance of the laser. Some processes generate more dust than others because they remove more material.

For example, deep laser engraving is the process that generates the most dust, while laser annealing does not.

To ensure proper dust management, you should select features based on the amount of dust generated:

An air knife or blower can be installed to blow dust away from the lens, preventing dust from accumulating.
A dust collector is required to keep the air clean and prevent dust from accumulating in the laser marker.
The laser head can be properly designed for environmental protection to ensure that it is dust and waterproof.
    in conclusion
We hope this article helped you choose the right laser system for your metal marking needs. Proper consideration can save you a lot of time and money.

Cheap and Simple B1 Enclosure for Laser

    July 13, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

There are several different options for DIY enclosures, depending on your level of experience, budget, and the time you're willing to put in. On the very cheap end will get a large cardboard box to cover the laser while it is running. This will keep all the smoke out, and if you're feeling fancy you can even add a cheap exhaust fan with some flexible ducting to get the smoke out the next window. However, there are of course some safety concerns with using highly flammable cardboard around a laser cutter and the inability to observe progress.

    https://www.atom-stack.com/collections/laser-en… ,

This brings me to the next step, and the options I actually recommend. For some visibility, you can add a tinted acrylic window that blocks the laser but still lets you see inside. To deal with the smoke, we'll use a cheap exhaust fan and some flexible ducting. This will result in a very functional case that is still very easy to build and not too expensive.

Because every laser engraver is a slightly different size, it won't do you much good if I just tell you the size I used for the machine and leave it there. Instead, I'll show you how to find the right size yourself.
    https://www.atom-stack.com/products/laser-engra… ,
To get the width of our enclosure, we want to see where the widest part of our machine is. Also, keep in mind that things like cables sticking out may need some space to move smoothly. Then you'll add some extra margin, like 1/2 inch or 10mm.

The dust cover for the ATOMSTACK B1 Enclosure laser engraver is equipped with an air inlet and a ventilation fan. The fumes from engraving or cutting will be purified through the filter system and exhaust, creating a fresh working environment for you.

    https://www.atom-stack.com/collections/3d-printing ,

B1 laser cutting machine shell safe design, fireproof metal structure, make the laser machine work safer, acrylic window design can filter laser to protect eyes and make viewing more convenient.

ATOMSTACK laser engraving machine shell safety dust box design, all metal structure, more durable, fireproof and dustproof.

The protective box cover with large internal space, and the bottom of the box has a movable bottom plate, which can be disassembled and can be placed with rollers to meet your needs. It is convenient for you to clean up the waste generated after engraving or cutting.

Ventilation system design Powerful ventilation system, high smoke removal efficiency, all-metal structure design, effective dustproof and fireproof, making your art carving work safer and more secure Automatic exhaust comes with an air outlet of about 2 meters, which can be opened after opening Automatic start of exhaust work, duct exhaust or use with air purifier for more comfortable working environment More flexible use Bottom removable door for placing rollers Engraving cylindrical objects, making it easier for you to clean up scraps after engraving and cutting work Compatible with all Atomstack machines Compatible with A5 series, S series, X series, P series and 95% of similar volume engraving machine brands on the market 670mm 300mm.

No matter what laser engraver you have, with very few exceptions, they all have one big problem in common, they are not closed. While this doesn't really matter for a 3D printer where you just need an enclosure to print special materials, for a laser it's a must. Carving or cutting anything creates a lot of smoke, and if you don't deal with it, it will just fill up your room. You can run the laser outside or next to a large window, but it's not a great long-term solution, especially during the colder months. Additionally, running an open frame laser engraver poses a hazard to any other person or pet who enters the room without proper safety equipment. While commercial enclosures do exist, most of them are quite expensive because shipping bulky items isn't cheap. That's why I'm going to show you how to build your own shell over the weekend with very few tools.

Powerful Atomstack A5 M50 Pro Laser Engr

    August 1, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

The compact table laser A5 M50 Pro cuts wood and acrylic, even marks metal and works without a connected PC.
    https://www.atom-stack.com/products/a5-m50-pro-… ,
However, lasers are not exactly harmless to the eyes. Therefore, one should always work with protective goggles. Expensive models have a closed installation space that protects against the laser light - but you will look in vain for such a housing in the entry-level class with a large work surface.

    Technical specifications
With a current market price of 500 euros, the Atomstack A5 M50 Pro is still one of the medium-priced devices for home use. Compared to the cheapest models around 100 euros, not only is the working area larger, the laser module is also significantly more powerful. The machine has a working area of 400 × 410 mm.

The frame of the laser is also the y-axis on which the x-axis moves back and forth. The Atomstack laser head sits on the x-axis and moves sideways on it. Since it is a fixed focus laser, the distance between the laser module and the workpiece must be adjusted. This works via an adjusting screw to which the laser module is attached. After all, no tools are required as with the old A5. The manufacturer specifies two mm as the optimum distance to the surface. To set the distance, we use the enclosed acrylic calibration aid. If this just fits between the laser and the workpiece, the focus is optimal and the laser can show its full potential.

A real special feature of the A5 M50 Pro are the factory-installed end stops, which are very helpful for frequently sweeping laser jobs. Exactly reproducible results (positions) would not be possible without the limit switches for determining the position. Also new and not seen before is the built-in emergency stop switch directly on the laser.

    Construction
The A5 M50 Pro kit arrives neatly packaged. The box contains the individual parts of the frame including screws and tools, the pre-assembled laser head, the control panel with mainboard, the touchscreen, a USB cable, some samples for engraving and brief instructions. A large metal sheet is also included to protect the table top. However, this was clearly bent in our model. The individual parts and components are all properly processed and leave a high-quality impression. Laser safety goggles are not included. Here it is better to use a model from a specialist dealer anyway.

    Software
The enclosed software is the freeware LaserGRBL. This works somehow, but we find it neither clear nor intuitive. As an alternative, we therefore use the software Lightburn, which is also mentioned by the manufacturer. The program can be used as a free trial version for 30 days, but then costs 60 euros. If you decide to buy a laser engraver, you should definitely plan this budget as well, because working with the commercial software is much easier.

    Conclusion
The Atomstack A5 M50 Pro laser engraver is a logical improvement over the older A5 model (review). Even cutting craft wood and acrylic up to a thickness of 10 mm and more works without any problems.

In addition to the great quality when lasering and engraving, we particularly like the stand-alone function and the built-in end stops. Those who frequently produce similar parts can now achieve reproducible results time and time again without any tinkering.

In practice, the only things that annoy us are the somewhat imprecise touchscreen, the lack of protective goggles and the open case.

The Best Wood for Laser Cutting and Engr

    August 15, 2022 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 20 °C

Besides being an easy-to-work material, wood also has great aesthetic appeal. Different kinds of wood look different and have properties that make them suitable for a variety of applications.
    https://www.atom-stack.com/products/a5-pro-40w-… ,
Many different types of wood can be cut or engraved with a laser cutter. Some are easy to use, while others require a powerful laser to cut.

    atomstack a5 pro

In this article, I'll detail some of the best woods you can use to laser cut and engrave to create beautiful projects.

    https://www.atom-stack.com/products/atomstack-m… ,

I also touched on factors to consider when using lasers to cut or engrave wood.

Factors to Consider When Cutting or Engraving Wood on a Laser.
It doesn't matter whether the wood you're cutting is hardwood or softwood, the thickness of the wood is the biggest difference between laser cutting or engraving.

The resin or sap content in the wood is the main parameter to study in laser cutting. Wood with higher resin content cuts darker and vice versa.

You need to use the short throw G2 lens to cut wood as it provides a smaller laser spot, closer to 0.1mm - 0.15mm. It helps concentrate all the energy of the laser in a tiny spot for efficient cutting.

Most engineered woods out there are glued together to achieve a layered structure. When cutting with a laser cutter, glue can melt, burn, and can cause various problems.

Additionally, engineered wood like MDF can contain sand and metal particles, which can cause problems when cutting with a laser.

When working with engineered wood, try wood made for laser engravers and cutters. You must also understand laser safety risks, hazards and controls when using lasers to cut wood.

Connecting an air assist to the laser is beneficial when vector cutting because it is important to keep the fumes away from the laser beam, and more so for visible laser cutters.

Using air assist can also put out any fires that arise while working with wood. I recommend having a fire extinguisher nearby as it will be a great help in the event of a fire.

A continuous blast of air onto the work surface will remove ash trapped deep within the cutting pocket, thereby removing charred areas of the wood.

Ash is a good insulator, so the more burning ashes you take out of your cutout pocket, the more drop cuts you get.

There are several wood laser engravers and laser cutters that offer good performance when dealing with wooden workpieces.

Low particle density wood is easy to work with. As you read the rest of this article, you will discover which wood is right for your application.

Best Wood for Beginners Laser Cutting or Engraving
Some of the best woods for beginners to laser cut are Alder, Balsa and Birch laser plywood. They are fairly light in color and can be used easily.

The grains of these woods are less dense and loose grained to help you cut these woods in one go.

I recommend Birch laser plywood as they are made specifically for laser cutting and engraving, they are thin, have low glue content, cut burns evenly and are one of the most affordable woods on the market.

With a 150W laser, you can cut 1/4" thick birch laser plywood at about 24 ipm with 70% laser power.

Alder, Balsa and Birch laser plywood will produce a modest but visible smoke when laser cut or engraved. You can use air assist and exhaust systems to effectively remove the resulting fumes.

I'll tell you more about these woods individually in the next sections of this article.

Cork is light in color, low in price and light in weight. They are also widely available and easy to use.

They are generally not weather resistant, but can be coated to maximize their lifespan.

The grain density of balsa wood is about 9lbs/ft3, the grains are arranged in a straight line, and the texture is rough.

It is white-brown to reddish-brown. They provide good sound/vibration isolation and are buoyant.

Balsa wood is relatively inexpensive and, due to its low grain density, can be easily cut or engraved with a laser power of 30 - 100 W.

1/8" thick balsa wood can be cut at about 72 ipm on a 100W CO2 laser cutter at 70% power utilization.

You can engrave 1/8" thick balsa wood using the same laser at about 948 ipm at 5% power.

They are lightweight and relatively strong, making them perfect for making surfboards, soundproofing, thermal insulation, architectural models, musical instruments and aviation models.

When used with a laser cutter, you will engrave and cut with high precision in balsa wood for many different applications.

    Tips for Laser Engraving Wood

    September 1, 2022 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

Wood in nature has a very different fate. Some low-quality wood was simply used as fuel and quickly disappeared without a trace. Some have been transformed into various furniture or tools to provide convenience for people's lives. However, there are other woods that can be loved and cherished. This wood is never pure wood, but a work of art or craft engraved by a laser machine.

    https://www.atom-stack.com/pages/laser-engraver… ,

Laser engraving technology taps the potential value of wood. A rough or even messy piece of wood is worthless until it is carved. However, laser engraving technology is not as easy as we say. Why? This article aims to give you some explanation with 6 tips on how to laser engrave wood.

    1. Low-viscosity masking tape

Before carving the wood, cover the surface of the wood with low-tack tape. In this case, there will be no brown or grey spots on the surface of the wood caused by smoke. When you're done, remove the tape and you'll find it's cleaner than usual. This method can be time consuming if you are working on some very detailed projects. A paint scraper can then be used to speed things up.

    2. Denatured alcohol

After the engraving work, prepare a bottle of denatured alcohol and a white cloth to clean the burn marks. Two things to note here - you must spray the alcohol evenly to protect the engraving, and you should use a colorless cloth (such as white) to wipe the burn marks without getting smudged by the dye.

    3. Burn at 1200 DPI

Higher engraving resolutions can be achieved by adding more dots per inch (DPI). More DPI usually means more laser shots. Therefore, if this method is used, the wood can be burned deeper, so two carvings may be required. Therefore, you should strike a balance between sculpting resolution and time spent.

    4. Take back your attention 0.2"

Do not set the focus of the laser automatically, but manually. You can use a digital caliper to lower the laser bed by 0.2 inches, which reduces mess and smoke. This way, not only will the carved plank surface be cleaner than ever, but you'll spend less time cleaning the plank surface. This method is especially recommended when sculpting very detailed projects.

    5. Use real hardwood for large carvings

Our past sculpting experience has taught us that plywood doesn't work as well as we thought. Then we chose hardwood for large carvings for 3 reasons. First of all, the texture of the wood surface is consistent and beautiful. The second is that hardwood is heavier than plywood, which can guarantee higher carving quality. The last one is that the hardwood surface can be completely controlled.

    6. Do some woodcut experiments

Although we don't machine plywood very well compared to hardwood, we do think you can carve plywood perfectly with skilled craftsmanship and an advanced carver. It is recommended to do more engraving experiments on different kinds of wood to find a better laser solution.

Laser engraving wood is a common technology in the laser engraving industry, but further mining the great value of wood is the eternal mission of laser engraving technology and machines. Therefore, we still have a long way to go in improving laser technology and processes.
