    Nadi

    June 26, 2022 in Fiji ⋅ 🌙 24 °C

We arrived in Nadi at 9.30am after a 4 hour flight delay. Having left Melbourne at 4am, with a wink of sleep in the airport and a couple of collective hours on the 4.5 hour flight, we didn't have much energy when we arrived at the President's Hotel.

We booked the President's Hotel as a cheap option, knowing there wasn't much to do in Nadi but not wanting to risk a delayed flight making us miss the only ferry at 8.45am each day (a good call in the end!).

We arrived at the hotel and an elderly gentleman helped us, although was unable to help us with EFTPOS "not today". The room was surprisingly okay after we'd seen the very basic facilities of the lobby. We had a quick rinse, dressed and headed out onto the main drive. Almost everyone we passed greeted us with "Bula", or wanted to shake our hand. Isaac and I were wary but not overly concerned - it was hard to ascertain exactly what the standard is.

We met a man who offered us his card for local tours, he took us to a local handmade store, where a man greeted us and told us he would welcome us to make Fiji our home. This was a Lava ceremony where he prepared it in a large bowl and served it in coconut bowls. I opted for a very small amount as I was not feeling 100% sure of the situation. It made my mouth numb, Isaac described it as having a few Strepsils.

We then wandered some more, down to look at the temple from the outside. We then headed back to the hotel, stopping in at the supermarket and refusing the many street vendors, offers of business cards and marijuana. The elderly gentleman said he would arrange our 7.30am taxi for tomorrow morning so we could have a good sleep. We had a three hour nap at the hotel before heading to a local cafe for dinner where we tried Walu fish with green pawpaw and a chicken Hawaiian pizza with some cocktails - overall, quite nice!!

We then headed back to the hotel, again avoiding people wanting to sell us tours etc on the way

We are both very keen to get to the islands tomorrow!!

    Arriving in Fiji

    June 26, 2022 in Fiji ⋅ 🌙 24 °C

A quick note on arriving that needs it's own entry.

The feeling of leaving Melbourne was quite surreal. I commented to Isaac on the way to the airport that there was quite a time there through lockdown that I honestly believed I might never again have the opportunity.

The first sight of a reef in Fiji was incredible - it was so incredibly beautiful! And the mainland looked so beautiful with its green in contrast to the bright blues of the water. A really beautiful feeling of "how lucky am I, again?"

Sitting at the airport waiting for everyone to disembark was also a lovely feeling, with the beautiful green mountains overlooking the airport.

    Very happy to be here!

    Blue Lagoon, Day 1

    June 27, 2022 in Fiji ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

We arrived at Blue Lagoon at around 1.30pm feeling a bit tipsy from the free wine on the ferry. After disembarking the boat, a man called a roll call and told you which cabin was yours. We were initially pointed in the direction of an ocean front bure which was incredible, only to find people in it and that ours was actually in the garden area with a shared bathroom 😅

We then headed to the restaurant for a briefing and for lunch (local whitefish, I had cous cous and Isaac had some root vegetable fries). I had horrible constipation, worse than I've ever experienced before so that wasn't great! We went for a snorkel, put our names down for some activities and did our mandatory COVID RAT test.

For dinner my feet were eaten alive by mosquitos after waiting two hours for dinner because they couldn't record our name when we tried to book a time at 4pm. I was incredibly HANGRY by that stage.

The resort is absolutely beautiful because the location is STUNNING. The water is so clear and blue and the sand is white with contrasting palms. The sunset was also gorgeous.. the good far outweighed the bad, and Isaac kept reminding me that all that really matters is that we're here together.

    Through Mamanuca, onto Yasawa Islands

    June 28, 2022, South Pacific Ocean ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

We jumped in the taxi at 7.30am and headed to Port Denarau to board South Sea Cruises ferry out to Blue Lagoon Resort. We made many stops to pick up and drop off passengers which made for an incredible journey past dozens (maybe even a hundred?) islands.

We had upgraded to the captain's lounge which gave us access to a comfy air conditioned space with included beverages and snacks. It was a little more crowded than we'd hoped, but overall was a good option rather than sitting in the sun. We sat next to a family from New Zealand and made frequent steps onto the deck to take photos and soak in the scenery. Fiji is BEAUTIFUL. The islands are incredible and I am very glad we made the choice to leave the mainland, I feel like this is the Fiji you hope to see.

    Arriving at Sunrise Lagoon Homestay

    June 29, 2022 in Fiji ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

We arrived at Sunrise Lagoon Homestay' at about 2pm after a very quick ferry from Blue Lagoon Beach Resort (10-15 mins).

It was really difficult to work out how to get into the place from the beach, as there are no signs and it definitely resembles a homestay!

We were greeted by Leethey (spelling unknown) who took our accommodation costs, explained the activities and how to get to the supermarket via the track before showing us to our dorm room. We are staying in an 8 bed room but apparently there is just one girl staying there with us tonight.

We then headed down to the beach, taking our valuable belongings as we realised there is no safety deposit box. We had a wander down, looking at the houses that are close to the beach. This definitely feels like the 'real Fiji ', even more than Nadi did. It must be incredible (and challenging in its own way) to live such a simple life in such a beautiful place.

    Smuggler's Cove

    July 5, 2022 in Fiji ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

We've left the islands - we were both very sad to be leaving and are sure we'll be back someday.

The realities of the mainland are not nearly as dreamy as the islands. It's nice and cheap at least though! But it's SO MUCH hotter and much less nice - plus it feels as though we're being scammed by everyone. There was an elderly indian gentleman telling us all the conman tricks on the souvenir shop in this accommodation and said "I know, trust me - I'm a conman too". Which I'm sure is correct, because I think he overcharged us haha, by about $5FJD.

I am feeling to travel bug hardcore and am just wanting to plan the next trip - maybe with Henry and Kim or Kaitlyn. So keen to just start living life again. Maybe Mexico next June with Henry and Kim. Or Brazil - anywhere!!

It's been lovely reading books and relaxing, doing what feels good and slow. Looking forward to the last two nights at a nice resort again though!!
