I wish that I had thought to shoot more videos here. I always forget about videos and concentrate mainly on photos. This is one of Kathy's videos. At least one of us was smart enough to get videos of a panda in action!Read more

  • Pandas!

    September 25, 2018 in China

We didn't have to walk very far to see more pandas. The pandas almost seem to know that people are looking at them and enjoy doing cute poses like this.

  • In Dream Land

    September 25, 2018 in China

This panda, like many of the ones we saw, was sleeping but, unlike the others, he seemed to be dreaming. He would be relaxed and then show his teeth again and again. I've seen dogs do this sort of thing but I never expected to see a panda doing it. I wonder what kind of dreams he is having?Read more

  • Panda Keepers for the Day

    September 25, 2018 in China

I had brought some Lego figures with me, hoping to use them in a few pictures. We didn't have much time left until we were supposed to meet back at the main office so I quickly threw this shot together before heading back. I would have liked to do more but there's so much here for us to see and do. I don't want to miss any off it! I think that this shot covers our time here fairly well. I've got Lego figures of Kathy and I interacting with a panda as the keeper looks on. Kathy is even offering the panda some bamboo.Read more

  • Lunch for a Panda

    September 25, 2018 in China

Once everyone was back at the meeting place, we headed to the panda pens for another feeding. I guess that it's their lunch time too. I'm so excited for another chance to interact one on one with a panda!Read more

  • Afternoon Feeding

    September 25, 2018 in China

Getting to the pandas was a long walk, nearly all of it going up hills. I wish that they had a shuttle van, or something similar, to take us there. By the time we arrived to where the pandas were kept, my lower back and feet would be so sore. Kathy thinks that it's good exercise for me. Knowing that a hungry panda is waiting for me at the end of the trail makes the whole walk worth it.Read more

  • The Touch

    September 25, 2018 in China

I don't know if this was the same panda as before but it could have been. They all look almost exactly the same. When I fed him this second time, his paw brushed up against my hand and I was able to feel him. A panda's fur is a lot more corse and rough than I had expected. I was expecting all of them to be very soft and fluffy but I guess not. I was so happy to be that close to him.Read more

  • Hungry

    September 25, 2018 in China

I'm still in awe that we're so close to these rare animals. I don't know what other places have animal experiences like this but I would love to do them all! I'd especially like to work with orangutans, elephants, gorillas, and rhinos. Those are endangered species that I would think have programs similar to this. I need to look into this whenever we travel.Read more

  • Another Chance

    September 25, 2018 in China

Kathy was given a second chance to feed our panda because he dropped one of the pieces of bamboo that she gave him. She looked so happy to have another chance to interact with the panda. I'm sure the panda was very happy to get more food. They seem to eat so much!Read more

  • Happy Meal

    September 25, 2018 in China

Like me, Kathy was simply amazed to be interacting with the pandas. I love seeing her looking so happy! Coming to this place was definitely worth it! I can't think of anywhere else where we could be having an experience like this!Read more

  • The Walk Back

    September 25, 2018 in China

After everyone in our group had a turn feeding the pandas, we walked back the main building where we watched a film about pandas and the sort of work being done here at the Dujiangyan Panda Base. I was expecting to doze off and rest for a bit but the film was very well put together and quite interesting. It was both educational and entertaining and I was surprised that I enjoyed it as much as I did.Read more

  • Wowotou Time

    September 25, 2018 in China

After the movie was finished, it was time for our last activity at the Dujiangyan Panda Base. We were going to make wowotou for the pandas. Wowotou is a sort of steamed bread for the pandas to eat. Bowls of this premade dough were put out and we were supposed to form it into little loafs so it could be made into treats for the pandas.Read more

  • Wowotou Master

    September 25, 2018 in China

Kathy didn't want to form the loaves because she thought it would be too messy. I didn't mind it at all and made several loaves. It was very easy and not messy at all because we had gloves to wear. The dough wasn't runny like cake batter. It was more like the biscuit dough that comes in a tube from Pillsbury. I had a lot of fun with this!Read more

  • Panda Kitchen

    September 25, 2018 in China

Here's a short video of me making the panda cakes. I did a pretty good job, if I do say so myself. I wouldn't want to eat something like this but I'm sure that the pandas will love it.

  • Food for Tomorrow

    September 25, 2018 in China

Here's the finished wowotou loaves. Once they are cooked, and then cooled, they will be fed to the pandas. I would have liked to see them eating the ones I made but they always eat breads that have been made the previous day. These look like big heavy biscuits. I wonder what they would taste like after are fully cooked.Read more

  • Closing Ceremonies

    September 25, 2018 in China

After we finished making the pandas food for tomorrow everyone was given certificates, with our names on it, stating that we had participated in the Volunteer Keeper for a Day program. There was also some parting gifts, which I thought was a nice touch. I don't know if everyone got the same stuff but we received a batch of panda postcards and a reusable bag to go shopping with. I also bought a small plush panda keychain to put on my bag, just to remember this place by. Not that I'd be able to forget this day anyway!Read more

  • Ready to Leave

    September 25, 2018 in China

Our driver was there waiting for us buy the time we were finishing up at the panda center. It was going to be a long ride back to the hotel in Chengdu but the car was comfortable and the driver was friendly. He didn't speak English but he did know a fair amount of Cantonese so Kathy was able to talk him a bit. Since he was nice and reliable, she wanted to hire him to take us back to the airport tomorrow but he said that he's not able to take us. He explained that he's an employee of the tour company, and the car belongs to them, so he wouldn't have any way to drive us to the airport. Kathy was explaining to him what we went through with the hired car when we first arrived in Chengdu but I don't think that he really understood her. After a while, all of the traveling and excitement caught up with us and we fell asleep in the car.Read more

  • Rush Hour

    September 25, 2018 in China ⋅ ⛅ 75 °F

I slept through most of the drive back to the hotel. I'm feeling so much better now that I've gotten a bit of sleep. We've gotten back into the main city of Chengdu but now we're caught up in the rush hour traffic. I'm just happy that I'm not the one driving! Hopefully, we'll be back at the hotel soon.Read more

  • Back in the Room

    September 25, 2018 in China ⋅ ⛅ 75 °F

We finally made it back to our hotel room. That bed looks so inviting but, before we sleep, we're going to go out and get something to eat. All I had today is some bananas and Kathy didn't eat much more than that. Hopefully we'll be able to get something good for dinner.Read more

  • Now This is Strange

    September 25, 2018 in China ⋅ ⛅ 75 °F

Before we went out again, I went into the bathroom and noticed that one side of the shower is a glass wall that looks out into the rest of the room. We've never seen something like this before. Is this so anyone in the room can watch people taking a shower? This is so peculiar!Read more

  • Going Down?

    September 25, 2018 in China ⋅ ⛅ 73 °F

A Chengdu subway station was right outside of the hotel is very convenient but we have no idea where we might take it to. We've only got this one night in Chengdu so we didn't look into tourist attractions. Right now, we just want to eat and then get some sleep.Read more

  • Chengdu by Night

    September 25, 2018 in China ⋅ ⛅ 73 °F

It was great to walk around in Chengdu at night and see everything all lit up. This area looks so different than Dujiangyan, where we saw the pandas.

  • Exploring Chengdu

    September 25, 2018 in China ⋅ ⛅ 73 °F

Everything is so bright and colorful here! Chengdu is much more beautiful than I had expected it to be. I wish that we were staying longer so that we could see more of the sights. I know that there's so much more to Chengdu than this one street.Read more

  • City Streets

    September 25, 2018 in China ⋅ ⛅ 73 °F

I must admit, I'm very surprised by how clean the streets of Chengdu are. I'm not sure what I was expecting to see but this is even better than I had hoped for.
