  • Time for Lunch

    8 listopada 2016, Anglia ⋅ ⛅ 41 °F

We ate dinner in Chinatown, since Kathy was in the mood for it and wanted to try their version of Chinese food. We picked a restaurant named Wong Kei. The menu looked good and the place looked authentic rather than touristy.
We made a good choice! The food was on par with both Flushing and Chinatown back home. Even the surly and rude waiters seemed like what we are used to in the New York Chinese restaurants. I don't know why all the waiters in Chinese restaurants are like that but I'm even more puzzled that people are so accepting of it. There's never any excuse for rudeness!

  • So Call Me Maybe

    8 listopada 2016, Anglia ⋅ ⛅ 41 °F

As soon as we finished eating, we made a quick stop at the hotel and then we had to get over to Piccadilly Circus to meet our Tours by Foot guide. Her name was Sinead something and, surprisingly, she used to live in Queens, very close to where we are now. She took us on a tour through Piccadilly Circus, Soho and Chinatown. She was very informative and knew so much London history and information. Much of it seemed to be concentrated on British music, especially the Beatles. We have maybe just a passing interest in the Beatles so we just sort of tuned out some of the information she had to impart but we smiled and nodded politely. That's just how we are. The main thing I did not like was that she walked so fast! Kathy and I were almost running to keep up with her! It was a great tour, and we really enjoyed it, but I would have preferred a more leisurely pace. Czytaj więcej

  • Against the Wall

    8 listopada 2016, Anglia ⋅ ⛅ 41 °F

Details like this abound in London. This sculpture is outside on the wall at 8 Glasshouse Street in Piccadilly Circus, right outside the donut shop where we're supposed to be meeting for our Tours by Foot excursion. It looks like we're the first ones here, unless some of the other people we see hanging around are here for the tour also and are just waiting to see when something happens. It's hard to tell when we don't know who we're looking for. Czytaj więcej

  • Piccadilly's Details

    8 listopada 2016, Anglia ⋅ ⛅ 39 °F

This was right near where we were supposed to meet Sinead for our first Tours by Foot adventure. Actually, the landmark to meet at was a doughnut shop in Piccadilly Circus. I was thinking of getting a doughnut there while we were waiting but the place looked kind of dirty. All the reviews on Yelp were bad, warning people to stay far away. This upstairs window was nice and colorful though. So eye-catching! Czytaj więcej

  • The Big Red Bus

    8 listopada 2016, Anglia ⋅ ⛅ 39 °F

At the beginning of our tour, we wasted nearly half an hour waiting for people who were "running just a bit late". I didn't think that was really fair to everyone else who made the effort to get here on time. If we can do it, there's no reason why everyone else can't. Making everyone else wait for you is very selfish. Unfortunately, there are too many selfish people in the world.
While we were waiting, everyone was talking and got to know each other a bit. Most of the talking was about where everybody was from and, as it turned out, the tour guide used to live in New York City, in Queens actually, very close to where we live. Such a small world!
Finally we were ready to start the tour! We began by walking around Piccadilly Circus for a bit. This was to tell us a little about the area and also not to get too far to allow the other latecomers to catch up with the tour. I had started out thinking of Piccadilly Circus being a lot like Times Square but, it's really not. There's some resemblance, with the big neon signs and displays, but Times Square is much more crowded and busy. Times Square also seems to have much more things to do. Piccadilly Circus seems to be mostly for shopping and eating out in one of the areas restaurants. I'm not saying that either area is better, just that they're different.

  • The Night Bus

    8 listopada 2016, Anglia ⋅ ⛅ 39 °F

Piccadilly Circus was a really great spot to explore! There always seems to be something going on and there's so much here to see and do. Our guide, Sinead, could have turned this area itself into the whole tour and I still don't think we would have seen all of it! She had so many interesting stories about the history of Piccadilly Circus, too. So far, I'm really enjoying this tour! Czytaj więcej

  • Splendid Sweets

    8 listopada 2016, Anglia ⋅ ⛅ 39 °F

One of the first stops on the tour was Fortnum and Mason, a very upscale store that sells primarily tea as well as many types of cookies, candies, and biscuits. All of it is beautifully packaged and looks like the sort of thing you would give as a gift. Workers were going around the room giving out samples and everything was delicious, with the exception of a special holiday blend tea. Kathy and I both thought that it tasted like medicine! We wanted to pick up some things here to give people back home but we didn't want to be carrying everything around on the tour with us. We decided to come back later, since it's so easy to get to from Piccadilly Circus. Czytaj więcej

  • Jam Session

    8 listopada 2016, Anglia ⋅ ⛅ 39 °F

Jams, jellies and marmalades seem to be very popular treats in England. Fortnum and Mason had a entire section of their store devoted to them. I enjoy jam and jelly but I'm not really sure what a marmalade is. I know it's something like a jelly but not quite. What's the difference between jams, jellies and marmalades? I just remembered about preserves. Where do preserves fit in? Czytaj więcej

  • Cookies or Biscuits?

    8 listopada 2016, Anglia ⋅ ⛅ 39 °F

The packaging of everything at Fortnum and Mason is fantastic! Everything just screams luxury and special tastes. I like the monkey package for these cookies but I'm not sure about the flavor. Pistachio and clotted cream doesn't sound very appealing. What is clotted cream anyway? I think it's a British thing, because I've never seen it in America. These are cookies but the British call them biscuits. Although we speak the same language, a lot of our words have very different meanings. I wonder what they would call the food we know as biscuits here. I'm not sure, but I think they call that a scone, unless that's another variation on the traditional biscuit. Czytaj więcej

  • Carousel Biscuits

    8 listopada 2016, Anglia ⋅ ⛅ 39 °F

This biscuit tin shaped like a carousel was so beautiful! It's a music box too, because it's able to play carousel music. We were thinking of getting this for Janet but, I must admit, I wouldn't mind having one of these for myself, too! I've always been a fan of carousels and this is something so unique to have! I'm really looking forward to coming back to this great store! Czytaj więcej

  • Holiday Windows

    8 listopada 2016, Anglia ⋅ ⛅ 39 °F

The windows of Fortnum and Mason were all decorated for Christmas, reminding me of what we do here in New York for the holiday season. I really wanted to stay here for a bit and see all of the windows and try getting some good shots. Holiday windows can be very tricky to shoot because of the difficult lighting and, even worse, the reflections on the glass. Of course, Sinead had us rushing down the street so I had to snap this on the run. I'll be back! Czytaj więcej

  • The Glockenspiel

    8 listopada 2016, Anglia ⋅ ⛅ 39 °F

High above the entrance to Fortnum and Mason was a very fancy glockenspiel. Sinead, our tour guide, pointed it out to us as we exited Fortnum and Mason and walked across the street. This was a very difficult shot to get because, since darkness had fallen, it was nearly impossible to even see this fancy clock, let alone photograph it. I was the only person in our tour group who even attempted to get a shot of this. Czytaj więcej

  • A Closer Look

    8 listopada 2016, Anglia ⋅ ⛅ 39 °F

Here's a closer look at the Glockenspiel on top of Fortnum and Mason. My original shot was an almost completely black image and it took a lot of processing to end up with this. I remember people in our tour group were looking at me like I was crazy to take this shot while it was so dark. While it took some doing, I now have the image, and they have nothing. Always at least TRY for the shot. Even if it doesn't work out you can just erase it and nothing was lost except a few seconds. If the shot does work out, you'll come away with an image you can keep forever. Always try! Czytaj więcej

  • A Chocolate Christmas

    8 listopada 2016, Anglia ⋅ ⛅ 39 °F

Even though November is not quite half over, this place was all ready for Christmas. The creations that they had on display were breathtaking! I can easily understand why Sinead brought us here. These Christmas trees are made completely out of chocolate, even the snow and the decorations. Every part of them is edible. I'm so impressed by this store! Czytaj więcej

  • Welcome to Soho

    8 listopada 2016, Anglia ⋅ ⛅ 41 °F

After we left Choccywoccydoodah, we ventured into the Soho district of London.
Soho is a small, multicultural area of central London; a home to industry, commerce, culture and entertainment, as well as a residential area for both rich and poor. It has clubs, public houses; bars; restaurants; a few sex shops scattered amongst them; and late-night coffee shops that give the streets an "open-all-night" feel. Czytaj więcej

  • Kingly Court

    8 listopada 2016, Anglia ⋅ ⛅ 41 °F

When Sinead took us to the Soho area, we went through it so quickly that everything was just a blur. This is Kingly Court, a very trendy and famous grouping of restaurants but, because we were racing through everything, nobody got to try any of the food. Soho is a very colorful and interesting area and I really wanted to spend more time seeing everything but Sinead was moving so fast. We had no idea why she was acting like that but it made us feel like we were missing so much. Czytaj więcej

  • Rebel, Rebel

    8 listopada 2016, Anglia ⋅ ⛅ 41 °F

Here's more of what the Soho district looks like. I wish our guide had told us about why this area is all decorated up like this and what it all means but, instead, she took us to a street to see where all of London's most expensive suits are made. Really? Why would anyone care about something like that? These decorated streets look far more interesting and photogenic. I'd say she took us to see the wrong stuff! What she was thinking!?
